Normally when I want to play bass, I take it out of my case, plug it in, and play it however I want to. xp Most of the time im just plucking, and sometimes Ill slap. For a jazz bassist, we never touch picks (but they help with my speed). And if I want to get really out there, I play salsa by thumping the fingerboard. I also play with a bow when I get on my upright.

Dopetoinfinity_13 I only use my fingers, using a pick makes it sound like a regular guitar and slapping defeats the entire purpose of bass ...You make me very sad. Very very sad.

The Amazing Mr. Tommyos! It's my opnion that you arn't a real bassist if you use a pick. Picks are for guitars. Nothing against you, but I don't like that psudo-slap sound you get from playing with a pick. It sounds half-assed. That's just me. ...Yeah, I play with my fingers. Ditto. The only time i play with a pick is when I'm covering 'Of Montreal' songs, cause their bassist plays with a pick, and it doesn't sound right fingered. I just finger the bass.

I use a pick for periods of time cause I like to keep my fingers from gettng too callused but I also finger pick and slap, does that make me half a bassist?

I usually just go with two fingers. I like to pop when I get bored. I'm starting to learn how to slap. The guitarist in my school's marching band is teaching me some stuff because the bassist is never there to teach me. Sometimes I'll use a pick since a 2 hour Band parctice with 1 ten-minute break hurts my fingers. crying

I play four finger style when I play for my band. When I solo I might slap a little but i'm not comfortable with it so I just do fun scales and triplets. I don't use a pick and can't really play proficiently when I do becuase I can't play as fast with a pick. When I cover a pick song I just thump the string against the gretboard as I play. Almost matches the tone.

Let's have bizzare celebrations...XD Of Montreal rocks. But, yeah. I don't pick unless I'm playing Yes. Chris Squire makes picks sound good. I use two- or three-finger style, a bit of slap, and of course tapping whenever I can sneak it in. 3nodding

I usually uase all four of my fingers, but it seems like three fingers is the thing to do. If I don't use all of my fingers I constantly pluck the wrong string, maybe that makes me a bad bassist but it works for me. 3nodding
Yay for the one or two other girls I saw in this thread xd

Rurik_16 what i wanna know is where do you hit the string? what makes the best sound? It really depends on what tone you're going for. Plucking the string closer to the bridge will give a more sharp, trebly sound while getting closer to the neck will make the sound warmer and more round. A good place for general purposes is probably somewhere in between the bridge and the end of the neck.

I often use taps and I slap-pick. Sometimes, when I'm feeling Jazzy, I'll use a pick. mrgreen

I use three fingers when plucking (haven't mastered the pinky). I generally play by the neck to get lower lows but I play by the bridge occasionally to get that famous Ric tone.

thats so sick you play with 3 fingers. Some how i cannot master that... My fingers do not fall at equal intervalz of time. i feel kinda deformed when i play like that
anyhow, i play using my two fingers. I never use a pick, I renders my speed. and im really getting into tapping with my new shecter. its got strings that are really low to the neck compaired to my other one. i tap in my band when im trying to set a dark mood or have a classical sound to the song. And sometimes i play close to the finger bored for a bluesier sound. like geezer butler of black sabbath
