parfaitsama AverageTyrant GothicAlice I'm sorry if you find this question idiotic, but I can't afford to wear gothic lolita as much as i'd like to. If I could i'd wear it every minute of every day. Since i'm not always dressed that way does that make me a poser? No, that wouldn't make you a poseur. [If so, I'd be one myself]
I would only call someone a poseur if they wore gothic lolita for the wrong reasons, like: "My friends are doing it!" or "I'll get a cute boyfriend this way!" or something utterly ridiculous like that.
yes. Poseur = posing = only doing it for show, not because it's something you believe in or actually like yourself. Oh no! That's not it at all. It's a little funny, i'm the only lolita in my town. Since it's small and slightly out of the loop. Thank you for your help guys. I am very greatful. Oh, and if you happen to need pictures of lolitas my profile has some. heart I'll post more later as well. Thanks again.

Everyone knows everyone else and they adore a change from the mundane. People are nice around here though they usually ask if I'm amish. We actually don't have amish folk that close by but we have penticostal and quaker sects in town that forbid women to wear pants. You'd think that'd be there first guess but I suppose they are just oblivious. It's when I walk around the city that people say mean things like "it's not halloween". So not all small towns are bad, I miss mine; they were so much nicer.

I live in a town filled with wannabe gangsters and mexican thugs. No offense. It is just a very unknown style here. I just get weird looks. Once in a while a rude comment. Although old people seem to like it. heart Does anyone else walk around with a big black umbrella? The most common remark I get is, "You know it's not raining right." To which I giggle to myself at their stupidity. They can't come to the conclusion that the sun is out so maybe i'm trying to block that. Oh the fun. ^^

parfaitsama PatchWorkAlice XxcoldrealityXx PatchWorkAlice parfaitsama actually, even in Japan, I saw a large number of lolita with striped socks, and it looked rather nice. but people who cant pull it off do it...or wear them with something that doesnt match...its more of a safety thing i suppose lol, if you know for fact it looks good then why not but for a starter lolita it tends to get errr....interesting ._. and im rather sick of seeing them with lolita sweatdrop i find it rather cute. i have an anime where the main girl is a lolita and she wears pink striped stockings. and btssb sells striped socks.... but to each his own i guess. ah yes but those arent the black and white, and i belive theyre mainly in the alice in the pirates line (and striped socks and pirates go hand in hand lol), i was getting at if they look nice and match the theme of the outfit its ok but if it doesnt its not going to look very lolita. and starting lolitas that just try to make their normal clothes look 'loli' with striped stocking or socks can turn out disasterous and look more like the emo/punk trend thats going around over here. what anime is it out of curiousity?
that's very true, about starting lolitas. ^^;;;;;;;
yes, I'm curious as well. O: What's the anime?oh! so sorry it took this long to respond. The anime is Moon Phase and the girl is so cute! shes kind of annoying sometimes. and she always wears a kitty headdress because she loves cats X3

DO's Wear conservative clothing. No micro minis and tube tops. Keep a Lolita attitude. We're generally old fashioned. PUFFY SKIRTS! Easy to make, and I was able to get a nice one in my little town for $50. Not hard.
I'm not good with this. On to the next thing...
DON'T's Don't be an eliteist. It just isn't fun, guys. Don't wear spike pinheels. Doesn't look quite right... Don't buy your entire wardrobe at hot topic. A real cute shirt with potential? Fine. But not all your clothing should be from any one store. Don't try to wear every single style. Try to focus on one.

Also, it makes it easier to coordinate outfits if you stick to one style for the most part. That way, you can mix various blouses and skirts, etc. without worrying whether the styles will clash with one another.
I think that if you're starting out, that it is a good idea to pick and focus on one particular style until you've got the hang of things or the resources to do more. It's what I'm trying to do, anyway.
Wearing it by the season isn't such a bad idea though, I suppose, either.

I think that if you buy one outfit at a time including the accsesories etc. you should have a ton of outfits that are all the different styles but all matching so it really doesn't matter. I think it doesn't take that much effort...
I also think that if you dress according to your mood and keeping the weather in mind you should be fine... I can't pick and choose my favorite style so why should anyone else...
I think that exploring and understanding different styles would make you a more cultural person...
I also think that there are too many awesome styles to just pick one.
I find that very difficult.
I hope I didn't sound mean either! :[[
But if I did you can punch me in da facceee.

I've got to dash off to a class right now, but I'll make one comment before I go.
Some Loli gals are a little larger than others, to put it kindly. And a mistake a lot of the more chubby girls make is to cinch the waists really REALLY tight on their clothing. Don't EVEREVEREVER try to do that. It doesn't accentuate in a good way and only brings viewers eyes to bad parts of your body. Tie the ties loosely with a BIG bow to draw the eye away from your flaws.
^ I'm seen tons of people make this mistake.

I found this on the internet. [edit] StepsThrow away any pre/misconceptions you may have! Gothic Lolita is not necessarily related to what you think of as "Goth". It is not a reference to Vladimir Nabokov's famous novel Lolita and followers of the style do not consider it to be a sexual style. Instead, adherents present themselves as young victorian girls and consider it necessary to look "cute," "beautiful," or "elegant" rather than "sexy." Purchase one of the Gothic & Lolita Bibles from a Japanese bookstore, comic book store or online. These magazines are a great resource for anyone interested in the style. If you don't have the funds to spend 15 to 20 dollars on one of the Bibles, visit one or more of the listed External Links for more information on what exactly "Gothic Lolita" is. It's good to have a strong foundation regarding what the style consists of before you attempt to dress in that way. Invest in a few essential items. These include (but are not limited to) a white blouse and a black blouse, one or two full skirts and a petticoat. Bloomers and socks are also good to have. After you have these, expand into other colors than black and white. Red, pink, light and dark blue, brown and floral patterns are common. Get a good pair of shoes and/or boots. If you are of average height or a little short, high-heels and platforms are encouraged. If you are relatively tall, you may still wear these shoes, but Mary-Janes are nice, too. Headdresses, chokers, parasols, plushies, bags, jewelry, nails and makeup can make the outfit more spectacular and interesting. Lace, frills, ribbon and other details are vital to the look. Hair is important. Use references to see what hairstyle works for you - and wigs are always an option! Bangs (a fringe), ringlets, long hair and pigtails are common. Wild, unnatural color is optional. Look at stores like H&M, Target and even TJ Maxx - popular stores like these often have nice blouses, skirts and stockings that can be considered Lolita. You do not have to pay 300,000 yen for a dress from Japan! Be polite, kind, and generally have good manners. Cross your ankles when you sit and always smile at people. Look straight ahead when you walk, as it improves your posture. Try to look as natural as possible. Pale skin is ideal but if you have darker skin then you can still look lovely! If you have dark skin, do not wear white powder; it looks awful. Be confident! Don't take anything from anyone; don't let people make fun of you. If someone makes a rude comment, reply with a smile or ignore the person. Getting angry is not the best response. If you are having trouble being confident to go out this way, start in a place where you are unlikely to see people you know.
[edit] TipsThe Gothic & Lolita Bibles as well as the Gosu Rori magazine have excellent sewing patterns for seamstresses of any skill level, so if you can sew, you should pick a few of them up. Knowing a little bit of Japanese is useful in understanding parts of the magazines, websites and patterns you may encounter. It is always a good idea, if you are devoted, to have a Lolita lifestyle. Decorate your room/house in that way, bake/cook, have tea parties and cherish everything that is beautiful. Male gothic lolitas should take steps to fit the feminine style; shaved/waxed legs, (tasteful) makeup, lipstick, and mascara will promote a more girlish appearance. See the movie "Kamikaze Girls," an entertaining comedy from writer-director Tetsuya Nakashima that serves as a veritable documentary on the Gothic Lolita look.
[edit] WarningsDo not confuse any other forms of Japanese street fashion with GL. Punk, Decora, Goth and Ganguro are not Lolita! You will be seen as a fool if you make this mistake! Unless you are going for the "ero-loli" (sexy/erotic Lolita), make sure that you do not show too much skin, and that your skirt is not too short. Male gothic lolitas may be subjected to ridicule by those who are not highly open minded. Don't wear ratty old sneakers with your beautiful outfit - they will ruin it. Remember - fashion is about being creative and unique. You can (and should) always maintain your individuality, even when following any style. Gothic Lolitas are different from Sweet Lolitas, which has a more childish/sweet style
[edit] Things You'll NeedSewing skills (optional) Petticoats Parasol Plushies Bags Good taste in makeup and clothing (remember Lolitas are always identified for having a refined taste in clothing and being elegant. Forget about weird and clashing colour combination)

I think that there is a basic silhouette for lolita.
Just like different historical eras have certain silhouettes, like if you put a crinoline under a regency dress, it's all wrong. (if you don't know what the regency era looks like...http://www.pemberley.com/janeinfo/molliens.jpg)
Lolita requires a petticoat. plain and simple. whether it be goth loli or sweet loli, you need a petticoat. XD
also, this isn't a requirement but rather a suggestion- if you have large breasts, try wearing a sports bra while in loli. it squashes your breasts a little, even mine which are small. 3nodding

Some of these have already been stated, but in the interest of getting this thread going again [since it has the potential to be a hugely useful resource for beginners] I'm going to post a few:
[Do]:
+ Take care of your overall appearance. +++ Dressing up in lolita is all well and grand, but if you have sloppy hair, make-up or nails the effect is going to end up ruined. Make sure to style your hair, do your make-up tidily and just in general be clean and tidy. Make a small "to-go" kit to carry with you so that you can make touch-ups to your hair and make-up whenever you need to. Carry a small brush or comb in case you get hit by wind, lip gloss, mascara or any other small make-up items you might need to fix yourself up in the event of rain or other make-up melters [like food], and any other items that you might deem necessary. If you have braces, bring a toothbrush and toothpaste for after meals [which technically you should do in or out of lolita, since it's just a good idea to keep things from sticking in your brackets anyway].
+ Have confidence in yourself. +++ Part of lolita fashion is to have fun and enjoy the luxury of your garments--don't be shy about wearing your clothing out in public unless you're going to an event that might get messy. If you're worried about what people might say, start small. Wear a hair bow or one of your blouses or cutsews with blue jeans, wear lolita-themes in your daily clothing [hearts, crowns, etc.] and work your way up to it if you need to. Don't be afraid to go out and be seen.
+ Experiment with the style to find what you like. +++ Lolita isn't a terribly original style in terms of individual and "unique" fashion. There are rules that need to be followed in order for the final result to look right, but that doesn't mean that you should be afraid to try new things. Layering is a blast with lolita outfits, especially because of the wide variety of sleeve and collar shapes. Try new accessories or hairstyles, have fun! Everyone loves dress-up and lolitas are certainly not exempt from that rule.
+ Remember the rules. +++ Try to keep your overall appearance modest, keep the lolita silhouette in mind, and look to brand name designers or experienced lolitas for inspiration in your experimentation and coordinations. There are places where you can bend the rules of course, but try not to do too much of that until you've got the style pretty down pat.
[Don't:]
+ Don't throw a fit if someone doesn't like your outfit; learn from your mistakes. +++ There's always a lot of drama in lolita communities about people critiquing "too harshly". If someone says something about your outfit that you don't like, don't get upset. If you do get upset, take a deep breath or just go away from the computer/person until you calm down. Do not, however, simply ignore their advice. Think about it, see it from their perspective. Many times, you'll find yourself agreeing with them if you look at yourself from the outside. If this is the case, learn from the mistake and keep it in mind for your next try. Also, it's the girls who pull the "nuh uh, I'm right, you're wrong!" arguments and refuse to gracefully accept constructive criticism that tend to end up in communities that shall not be named. So remember your tact and don't let yourself get mad.
+ Don't wear heavy make-up. +++ Granted, there are some exceptions to this rule. Erotic lolita, punk lolita and gothic lolita all tend towards heavier make-up because of their more dramatic elements. However, this shouldn't mean that you're painting your face white and lips black, etc. Your make-up should still be tasteful and avoid looking like something you'd wear as a Halloween costume.
+ Don't assume that just because it's brand, it's perfect; by the same merit, don't assume that it's garbage because it's off-brand. +++ Granted, Japanese lolita brands are often very high quality--this is why they are so sought after by so-called "Brand Whores". It isn't the bragging rights that make these brands important, it's the level of craftsmanship, design and material quality which make them so valuable. Sometimes they slip up, though. There are plenty of examples of brand name items that aren't exactly flattering in design. By the same merit, just because something is off-brand or made by a small company, doesn't mean that it's automatically garbage. Look at the quality of the piece, check the fabric and lace and how well it's put together. If it's a style that you like and made of quality materials and put together sturdily and tidily, then get it! These are more vital than whose name might be on the tag.
+ Don't try to change yourself to better "fit in" with lolita; don't try to force your lifestyle on others. +++ Some people live lolita as a lifestyle, most people do not. Don't change how you speak or act just to "fit the part"; it often comes across as absolutely ridiculous, if not a bit snooty. Don't try to force yourself to drink tea if you don't like it, and don't [for the love of GOD] try starving yourself to fit into brand. If you want to dive into the lifestyle as a whole that's fine, but try not to shove it onto other people or declare them "lesser lolitas" just because they don't like tea and crumpets as an afternoon snack.
