"It's understandable, I guess," Grete shrugged. By this time, she was used to the differences in everybody's world. In fact, most of the time, it was more surprising for their to be similarities between worlds than differences.
"But, Iosif's right," She added, pointing at him, "They do sound very pretty."
After a few moments of thinking, Grete thought of something that she had been wanting to ask. Maybe not quite the best question, but, her curiosity was getting the best of her.
"So, why did you two join Cirque? And where are you from? You both have talked about some things that I'm not really familiar with. If you don't mind me asking, that is."

Ah. That question. Iosif had been kind of hoping that wouldn't crop up, because the story behind it was long, complicated, and perhaps not the best tale to tell when trying to make a favorable first impression. It wasn't in Iosif's nature to lie however (he could embellish stories certainly, but actual lying never sat well with him) and so he cleared his throat and shrugged his shoulders somewhat absently. When he spoke it was with noticeably less enthusiasm. "I am from Moscow, in Russia, yes? Except I have move a lot. In Moscow, in uh - " He hesitated for a moment, trying to remember the English translation, "in Pale of Settlement? Place in Russia set aside for Jews. After this, the Pale of Settlment, my family move to New York. And then I move to Chicago."
Well, the easy part was over. Iosif had told them truthfully where he was from. He wasn't quite as comfortable telling them why he had joined Cirque, however. "I join this circus 'cause I figure my talent will be useful, eh? I shoot things!" Immediately Iosif brightened, hand settling on the innocent looking pouch by his hip. His face once more illuminated with a smile, Iosif turned expectantly towards Lucrezia, interested to hear her story.
While he hadn't told either girl the whole story, he hadn't lied. Thus things were okay in Iosif's somewhat addled mind.

Lucrezia looked Iosef up and down once. He didn't look like the characatures of Jews that she had come across in Rome, but then again, she had figured those were exagerations and let the thought slide. "My world is kind of old. It's just coming out of a dark time full of famine and disease and that kind of thing, but when I lived there it was very good. I never knew my mother, but I grew up at the circus in Rome, with my father," she began. That wasn't 100 percent true, of course, since she had no guarantee that Paolo had been her father, but that wasn't worth arguing.
"He taught me aerial tricks, like I do now. We had an act together for a long time, depuis j'etais tres petite. About five or so. I lived there my entire life, until recently."
She hesitated, not sure if she wanted to talk about what had made her leave her home, and decided to keep it as nonspecific as possible. "He died a few months ago. I left intending to become a maid somewhere, but this place called to me. I don't know how to do anything other than cirque work."
She glanced at Grete, wondering what the older girl's story was.

Having not been asked, Grete decided not to tell why she joined Cirque. She figured that it was something that she would keep to herself anyways. Part of her wanted to confide in someone, but it would probably just scare people off. Or backfire, and then Grete could wind up in jail.
That wasn't a fate that she wanted at all.
"Oh, god," Grete covered her mouth after hearing Lucrezia speak, "I'm so sorry about your father. I didn't mean to..." She trailed off, feeling guilty and horrible that she had asked about it.
Grete then watched Iosif. Her eyes searched his face for any sign of whether or not she had just brought up somthing that she shouldn't have.
And her bets were on that she probably shouldn't have asked. Grete, nervous and guilty, just tilted her head to the side and glanced downwards at the ground, hoping that someone else would change the subject to something lighter.

If there was one thing the constantly inane Iosif was good for, it was lightening the mood. He suddenly threw his arms over both girls' shoulders and tossed his head back, barking out a laugh that was terrifying and jovial all at once. "Eh, who cares! We are in circus now, yes? Is all that matters. Past is not the place to sit on a** and go 'Oh boohoo!' and make very silly person of yourself."
True, Iosif's philosophy didn't appeal to some. But Iosif was of the opinion that there was little point in lingering in the woulda-couldas, and that it was better to live in the now than anywhere else. Perhaps given both Lucrezia's recent grief and Grete's troubled past it wasn't the most appropriate thing to say, but Iosif rarely said the right thing at the right time, if ever. It was why no one came to him for that sort of advice.
Still, his mood was somewhat catching. He hugged both girls in a near painful chokehold and then released them, baring his teeth in a wild and crooked grin. "It could be worser," Iosif offered, shrugging his shoulders.

"C'est vrai," gasped Lucrezia, considering it for a moment and returning Iosef's grin. There was something about this big bear of a man that was endearing, even if it was just his insurmountable enthusiasm.
"It's funny," she sighed when she finally regained her breath from the chokehold. "Back home, I always hear about people running away to join the cirque..."
She looked around at all the brightly colored tents and trailers that made up the camp before finishing the statement.
"But I never really knew what they meant until now."

Grete jumped just slightly as she was pulled into the hug. She wasn't quite used to anyone quite so optimistic on the surface, and it shocked her to see Iosif behave like that.
"You have a good point," Grete said, glancing up at Iosif. On second thought, she added, "You, too," to Lucrezia.
"It really could be worse. I mean, hey, we're in good health. Well, I mean, I think we are. I am. You two look okay," Grete stated with a confident smirk back on her face.
Grete rubbed her shoulder where Iosif had suddenly grabbed her. As sweet as the gesture was, Grete wondered whether or not Iosif knew his own strength.

Iosif was likely perfectly aware of his strength; he just tended to disregard the health of others unthinkingly. Iosif beamed proudly at both girls as if they had experienced some sort of epiphany under his tutelage, and then laughed loudly at Grete's comment. Pounding his chest with a fist as if to prove it was solid, Iosif turned to Grete and said, "Of course I am in the perfect healths! I am like opotime of this." Of course what he meant was "epitome", but nevermind. Vocabulary was never one of Iosif's strongest suits.
Lucrezia's comment made him think for a moment, though. He was a bit old to run away and join the circus. He preferred to think of it as a midlife crisis. He'd always wanted one of those. With a contented sigh, Iosif stuffed his hands into his pockets and turned his head to the side, considering Grete and Lucrezia both. He hadn't realized how much older he was than the others. It didn't bother him, really. It just struck him as different.
His mind quickly leapt on to newer, more interesting topics. "We ought have toast, yeah? You can drink?" Iosif asked, raising his brows in challenge towards the girls.

"A little," admitted Lucrezia, blushing. "I have a very low tolerance for alcohol."
She squirmed inwardly and looked back and forth from Grete to Iosif.
"Not to mention I don't really like it. We drink very watered down wine a lot, though, back home."

Grete let out an audible snort of laughter at the question of whether or not she drank. She instantly felt unlady-like, however, and tried to make it appear as though she were just having a coughing fit.
"I believe we should make a toast!" She turned to Iosif and asked, "Is there anything in particular that you want to drink? I did just buy some new stuff..."
Her voice trailed off, and she simply glowed in anticipation. The alcohol that she had just bought was high-quality, and she had been wanting a drink, but figured that she would just hold off until she was by herself.
Now, she actually had an excuse!

Well, Iosif hadn't been making a serious proposal, but who was he to turn down free booze? True, he was used to drinking in much different circumstances - a change of pace would be appreciated, at least. But Lucrezia didn't seem too comfortable with the notion, and it wasn't Iosif's way to put anyone ill at ease. At least not intentionally.
"We make toast later," Iosif said, grinning at Grete. "Me and you, yes? Is going to be very nice!" Thus figuring he had reassured Grete, he turned to Lucrezia, looking proud that he had managed to turn down the offer for alcohol. Clearly, he was a good and caring person.
"Is okay, Lucy," he said, nodding sagely at her. "Is not for everyone, yes?"
Iosif had made his living off of alcohol however - or at least indirectly. He had nothing but a deep respect and love for it.

Lucrezia nodded and flashed him a smile, "Right," she acknowledged. Iosif didn't seem that bad, she reflected. And Grete? Well, Grete, she had to admit, was nicer than she'd originally thought.
"So," she asked him, "Have you found your way around yet?"

Grete, while saddened about not drinking at the moment, smiled at Iosif. At least she would drink later.
"Sure, I can do that!" She exclaimed, clapping her hands together at his suggestion to drink later. It probably would be distasteful to drink in front of Lucrezia, who doesn't drink. Maybe she was sensitive about drinking?
Regardless, Grete didn't bother her about it. Once Lucrezia had asked Iosif if he knew where everything was, Grete was shocked that she hadn't thought to ask it. Being one of the members of Cirque who had been working there for a while, it was pretty much her responsibility to ask that question.
Flustered, Grete blushed lightly, and awaited Iosif's response.

"Eh, I see some tent, I see the people - is more than that?" Iosif asked, seeming to genuinely not know. He'd taken a few walks around - like the one he had been on before encountering Grete and Lucrezia - but Iosif's sense of direction had never been that developed to begin with, and truthfully he wasn't quite sure where he was at that moment.
Then he remembered: he was looking for something!
"Oh!" Iosif exclaimed suddenly. His trademark smile appeared once more and he laughed, looking a little embarrassed. "Okay, I has maybe a question for you gals. I am looking for sleeping place? I do not know where it is to be." He'd spent the last night curled up under a tree - nice, but not exactly how he wanted to spend his time permanently.

Lucrezia frowned momentarily. She knew where her own trailer that she shared with Wing Ting and Marien was, sure (provided it hadn't up and moved since that morning), but she didn't know where any othe men bunked. Chewing her lip casually, she looked over in Grete's direction.
"Could he room with Hadrian or Charlot?" she asked. Or what was the other man's name? The dark one? Never mind that. She'd only seen him briefly, and that had been weeks ago.
