Well on a otherwise stock engine it's a bit overkill.

A bit of an update on plans for the mustang.

So, it turns out it's rather hard to find a decent T-5 around here... which, as you can imagine, tweaks my nose.

Soooo... I'm going to have to order one off the interwebz... from SummitRacing.com. I actually feel safer doing this considering it's going to be a new transmission from Ford Racing... plus, if it has problems I know who to nail for those problems... anyway, as you can guess, this is NOT a cheap venture... well... not for a high-school student at least :/. The tranny's going to cost about $1,300 to buy, probably a hefty sum more to ship and have it installed. I would install it but I don't have to tools to do so, plus, I'd rather the professional's do it. So, that's about $2,000 there in parts, shipping, and labor. >_< Yeah, you can imagine how I felt about that one. Oh well, performance parts are never cheap. So, that puts a bit of a crimp on my wallet to get the fuel injection system...

Soooooo... it looks like I'll be doing some other performance pieces first. The rears are going to be swapped for a slightly lower gear ratio so that the manual trans. along with the motor can actually turn the gears. Also, I'm going to be getting a 302 crank, rods, and pistons to basically make my 289 a stroker 302. I've heard 351 heads can swap onto a 289 with a little modification, but, that's a bit out of my price range. The headers are still going to be bought along with having them still modified at a shop so they can be capped/ uncapped depending on whether I'm racing or not.

So, the engine will actually be a little more modified than originally thought.

The fuel injection system will be coming sometime next year, probably during the summer. I may drop it to around 750cfm, but, deffinetly not all the way down at 400. But, like I said, the biggest reason why I'm looking to run with the Edelbrock system is because, unlike a lot of the other fuel injection systems I've looked at, their's doesn't require a laptop to callibrate it or anything. It is ready to go as soon as you install it, basically. Plus, I certainly want a fuel inejction system because they give more power outright compared to carburetors, and also, provide better fuel mileage. I've heard that if you're light on the pedal, a 289 can get upwards of 20mpg, not bad for 40 year old technology. I'll probably be looking at 15-18mpg on a light foot.

Anyway, that's an update on the plans for the mustang.

Well If you're going for a 750 you may want a cam with more duration, wasted gas ain't worth nothing.

This is a way of working out the best size induction for your car.

Max rpm x Cubic inches /3456 x 0.85
so

5500 (ball park figure) x 289 /3456 x 0.85 = around 390.

Pretty good guess huh?

so, an update... well, it looks like we're going with a 1966 Ford Mustang coupe, gold with black gt stripes... though this is not an absolute yet... currently its the 2bbl. 289, and he's got it up to about 250hp. He's had a performance build done on the C4, so, if we get it, the auto will be staying.

Anyway, a look at new plans... I've decided that I'm scrapping the fuel injection... I'm instead turning to another performance package from Edelbrock. It's a "Complete" performance package, but, mostly it's cylinder head work. Paired with an 800cfm carb, AVS or Thunderseries, and I'm looking at a sweet 350hp out of a little 289. Eventual other mods will include headers, probably a new pulley set-up, and other minute things. With the work he's done, and the work I'll be doing, we're looking at tipping the scales at possibly just over 400hp. It will be a monster of a 289. The tranny has been built to handle that sort of horsepower, too.

Considering the '66s only weighed about 2700lbs. with the V-8, it will be one helluva' fast car.

The only other possibility is a red '68 Coupe with a 302. We're doing a test-drive of that one on Monday, most likely, we test drove a '68 with a 289 4bbl. today, and are test driving a yellow '65 with a 289 on Friday. We test drove the '66 on Sunday. We'll have to see which one we go with.

Are you planning a lot of top end RPM?
I just don't get why such big breathing induction.

Gold and black I've allways thought was a sweet colour combination either way around.
