My religion teacher said that people with the gift of tounges sound as if they were speaking gibberish, like some said before, it only sounds as if they were speaking gibberish, but people out there pretend to have the gift of tounges.
But i also thought , lets say you cant speak Arabic, the Holy Spirit............ um............takes over you and you can suddenly speak in Arabic. It sort of confuses me.

i personally think that you speak in one tongue but everyone that listens to you thinks you are speaking in their tongues. so essentially, you are speaking in many tongues.

I remember when i first learned to speak in tongues...i was at church and the pastor told us if anyone wanted to get the gift of tongues then they should come up and be prayed for. I thought, why not? that would be a cool gift to have...but i didn't really know a lot about tongues, so i went up. This lady prayed for me and basically she just told me to clear my mind and say the first thing that rolled off of my tongue...it seemed too simple...i mean if recieving the gift of tongues is THAT easy then ANYONE could get it.....was she full of crap? question confused

No, she wasn't full of crap. It is that easy. It's supposed to be. And yes, anyone can get it. Providing they are a follower of Christ, of course. But anyone can be that as well.

Tongues are different languages. It is mentioned when the holy spirits is given to the decisiples and they started talking in different tongues so all in the crowd could understand them.

Sorry to correct but the Holy Spirit came on the Apostles (Original disciples minus Judas, but plus Matthias and Paul) not the disciiples. Saying disciples can be confusing for some people.

Act 2:4: "And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance."
Tongues means different languages -- Hebrew, Latin, etc... What the Bible is telling us is that those who had the Holy Spirit reigned upon them - were able to speak to people not of their native tongue (language). It is like me not knowing Italian -- but being able to tell Italians of the Gospel... in Italian so they can understand.
My grandfather who is a preacher, and his girlfriend speak in tongues and they explained it to me when I was a teenager. Christians needed a way to preach the good news to people of different backgrounds, and God provided them the Holy Spirit to enable them to speak different languages.
