Isaiah noted the spiraling silence and shifted slightly, uncomfortable. Had he said something wrong?
"So..."
Uziri did understand, and proved her mental prowess at this grasp on Caden's body language by finishing the brownie herself. Waste not, after all.

Thankfully, neither of the two awkward participants had to break their uncomfortable silence. The little spirit-babies made it oh-so-much-easier. Because he had strained himself consuming the double-fudge mint brownie, Caden felt just a tad woozy. Concentrating on his coffee cup, Ethan didn't exactly grasp what was going on with the little boy until it was too late.
With an "Abrugch!", chunks of mint, chocolate, and fudge splattered onto the ground in-between Caden's legs. His eyes started watering, then dripping with unsalty tears, and finally drenching the carpeting with multpile pools of crystal-clear water; with the same brown and undigested blocks of brownie on top. No one knew where these tears came from, though Ethan usually could tell.
It was definitely not caused by the utter humiliation and discomfort of throwing-up, because Caden has already survived situations such as that. But there seemed to be something peculiar that bothered him about throwing up. Something that seemed natural to the baby, but had no real explanation.
Ethan probed his mind for sometime, until the cleaning/baking clerk came to clean up the mess. "Has it happened to Caden before? Could he be reliving a horrible memory? I certainly don't remember him ever throwing up. He sure HASN'T been a problem since I found him... odd!"

Isaiah winced and cringed at poor Caden's sudden vomiting outburst, glancing up at Ethan and at first confused by the response. It wasn't exactly concern, was it? But then, he'd just met the man...maybe how Iz showed concern for things was far different from Ethan.
"I...dunno. Maybe it's just an allergy," he said reasonably.
Uziri watched in horrified fascination as Caden made an urpy-noise and seemed to explode. The floor was wet with eye-drippings too, and while Uziri was rather discomforted by being surrounded by bodily fluids in such volume, she did have to admit to herself it was morbidly interesting. She watched Caden worriedly.

Caden continued to cry, and seemed like he would go on for, well, forever. Ethan miserably attempted to calm him down, using various bribing methods that was used on him when he was young. Fortunately for Caden's future (because we wouldn't want him turning out like Ethan), none of those methods worked. The whirlwind of confusion and tears grew and grew as the clerk started wiping down the drenched floor. He muttered as he bent down with paper towels. "Messy little kids... shouldn't even be here... they better give me a raise... ugh, double-fudge mint... all the boy's fault..."
What the clerk didn't know was that Ethan had a quick temper. Sure he knew the celeb-kid stopped by often, but there was never anything to trigger such an outburst as the one that was about to occur. Well, this time, he'd done it. Eyes the color of liquid gold burning in a forge loomed over the clerk, who had suddenly become tiny.
"What did you say?" The voice was menacing. Threatening. Poisonous and vile. "I didn't... nothing. I didn't say anything." "Don't lie to me. You're blaming this on a little boy. Blaming your PETTY job on a little boy who'd just thrown up. Who the HELL do you think you are? You know what? It isn't even his FAULT that your brownie couldn't be digested." At this, the waterfalls from Caden's eyes immediately ceased flowing. However, Ethan wasn't even close to being finished.
"And YOU, little pipsqueak, you are nothing. You can DO nothing. Ya can't bake, can't clean, can't wipe up a little chunk of chocolate. Worthless little..." Ethan stopped and thought. "OH! Right. You're the baker AND the janitor. Hey, I'll cut you some slack, since I guess you'll be losing TWO jobs today." Ethan's conversation with the baking/cleaning clerk ended with the latter boy going home with a bloody mouth and a loose tooth. "Let's get outta here." He held out his hand to Caden, who took it in stride, and walked out of the coffee house.

Isaiah, who'd watched silently throughout the entire ordeal, put Uziri back in her box and followed dutifully after Ethan, pausing only to sneer at the clerk.
"Serves you right, you nasty little bipedal tumor," he said pleasantly, eyeing the guy's bloodied mouth in half-interest. "If it weren't for all the witnesses in here I'd bite your trachea out."
Uziri blew spiteful spit bubbles and dribbled saliva onto the floor, face scrunched up rebelliously.
Catching up to Ethan outside, Isaiah voted on saying nothing until the kid's mood had calmed a bit - as well-earned as that tirade had been, Iz wanted to tread lightly just in case.

The group of four walked for a bit -- finally crossing that street like Isaiah was trying to do before the unfortunate *screeeeee* occurred -- and stepped out into the sun that shone cooly on the field beyond the shadows and the falling leaves. Without a word, Ethan sat down on the dry grass, with Caden plopping down on his bottom real close behind. Caden recovered, got up, and sat right on Ethan's lap. Two pudgy arms and one hand trailing with fog half-circled Ethan's waist, and the college student hugged back.
What made this moment special wasn't its "awww-ability". What made these few seconds extraordinary was the exchange of sympathy between the guardian and the spirit. Wrapped in the Autumn sun's glow, Caden began to see the heart that Ethan had for him -- the source from where his protection sprang. At the same time, Ethan understood what had caused Caden to be so upset before: he had thought it was his fault, and something in his past had made him believe that it was an irreparable mistake.
With that, the pair strengthened their emotional bond to include, also, a mental bond. So it wasn't surprising to either when they stood up at the same time to greet Isaiah, who had been walking behind them. Ethan smiled one of his rare smiles. "Sorry about that, again."

Isaiah, who'd remained quiet and watched the sweetness of the scene as someone who didn't quite understand it but appreciated it nonetheless, jumped and shook his head slightly.
"It's no big deal, that guy was practically begging for it," he said reassuringly. "I for one enjoyed the expression on his face."
Uziri eyed Caden again, half-hoping even more Funny Bodily Liquids would gush out, and half-relieved that there was no continuation to the show. She decided not to dwell on the fact that it had been her snack that had caused the vomit extravaganza, but nibbled on the bit of it she had left pensively.

"Well I'm glad you did. And I'm sure all that racket I made in the store wasn't all for nothing... I mean hey, if that guy DOES get fired, it'll benefit a whole TON of people who would have had to deal with him, right?" Ethan looked for a justification, and found it in Caden, who nodded his head quite violently.
"Anyway, I'm still sorry you had to see that. I'm really not awful ALL the time --" The teen paused, and took out his cell phone, which appeared to be vibrating. "It's from the headmaster, damn!" He walked backwards at a rapid pace towards his silver Vespa, talking with his head towards the other spirit-child and her guardian. Ethan and his fog-feet ran after him. "Look, Isaiah, I've got to go. But you know what you said about Durem? I think I'll take you up on that offer pretty soon. Sound good?"

Grinning at Ethan's reasoning (it made good enough sense to him), Isaiah nodded and waved goodbye.
"I'll hold you to that," he said. "See you around."
"Buhbuu, C'deeen," Uziri called shrilly, waving with both arms frantically.
As Isaiah waved a final time and set back to walking along the sidewalk, a sudden thought struck him.
"Hey, which way to I go to get home, anyway?" he asked the baby.
"Shngaa."
"...fat lot of help you are."
