Finn chuckled. "Yeah, I guess you're right. I can't help but be a little uptight. I'm new at this whole dad thing. Sevan's got some wingpower though, that's for sure."
He waved at Maya, happy to see that her foul mood had passed for the time being. She seemed to be having fun with Sevan, and she even had let the girl touch her, which was quite the milestone.
"Man Maya, you got to fly! I'll bet you'll want to do that again sometime, eh?" Finn suggested, using his 'baby voice' on his daughter.
Maya grinned and clapped her hands together as if to say, "Yes! Again, again!"

Sevan's dissappointment washed over Sensations like a wave, causing him the same distress her wings had. She is sad that she tired out so fast. She wanted to carry her around... He turned his attention to Sevan, Someday, shade of my heart. Someday. He could feel her brighten, which reassured him. Quite a bunch we are, eh Mort? Our strengths compliment the others' weakness quite well. Odd, if you stop to consider it.
Sevan, leaning with exhaustion against the side of the cart, reached out to hold Maya's hand. Her eyes were lidded, but she was determined to stay awake.
Quinn picked Boo up from where he had been deposited at the bottom of the cart and snuggled him up next to Sevan. She then reached out to Finn, brushing his hand. "I think there's more than one reason they call them 'baby steps.' Now, lets finish up, so I can get you home."

Mortality saw the hurt on Sevan's face too, but was pleased to see that Maya had enjoyed being lifted off the ground by Sevan. She was starting to trust the winged girl, he saw, pleased. Well, soon she will be stronger, I'm sure. They'll grow up sooner than we realize I'm afraid. The worm looked around at the mismatched bunch and couldn't help but agree. Yes, we are quite a bunch. Perhaps we were all made for each other, he chuckled, knowing this was highly unlikely.
"See pie Sev?" she asked, holding onto Sevan's hand. Maybe the girl needed a nap? With that, she offered her part of the blanket, hoping it'd keep her warm.
"Sure enough," Finn replied, pushing the cart down the aisles, grabbing a can or a box of something off a shelf here and there, completing the shopping they had to do.

"Or perhaps we were on the same shelf," mused the mouse, thinking back to that fateful day in the library. "What ever the case, I thoroughly enjoy your company."
Sev took the proffered blanket gratefully, curling up next to Maya, her head resting lightly on the girl's shoulder, fingers entwined. She didn't want to sleep, just in case she missed something, but she was sooooo comfy.
Quinn pulled a cell phone out of her diaper bag and began scrolling down the numbers. "How much more time you need? Need to know what to tell the sitter." She smiled, more demurely than before and wondered if he liked her for what she was offering more than who she was. It was a moment of self-doubt that she didn't often entertain.

That could very well be, Mort nodded, thinking about it. We could ask the guardians if their books came from the same shelf. I wonder if they'd even remember? He paused, trying to think if he knew a way in which they were related. You've proven to be an excellent companion Sen. I hope we get to see each other again.
Maya allowed the girl to rest her head on her shoulder, and she examined Sevan's fingers, curled between her own. It was funny how she'd let someone in so easily...Usually she'd be resistant when meeting someone new. But Sevan was somehow comfortable.
Finn was a bit shocked when she actually pulled the phone out of her bag and began looking for a number of a sitter. "Really?" he asked, and then chuckled. "Well, I'm pretty ready when you are I think," he said with a wink. "We can just hang out if you want--have dinner, go to a movie maybe...I don't want to...um, scare you off." He blushed again, but this time, he was back to his old Finn-self. "I do like you Quinny," he said, grabbing one of her hands and looking up to meet her eyes. "I wouldn't want to make things awkward--but I certainly wouldn't mind spending some time with you alone."

She chuckled softly, rubbing her thumb along his hand, "I don't scare so easily, but your idea sounds wonderful. And I think we could both use the night off. Having parenthood sprung on you doesn't make for an easy few days. Come on," she drew her hand from his and re-established herself behind the girls' cart. "Look, Finn!" She pointed into the cart, having just noticed that girls were snuggled up together in the cart. "All things considered, I think the girls might like to be together with one sitter. Think Maya'd be more comfortable at your house or would you guys like to come over to mine?" She snapped a picture of Maya and Sevan with her camera phone and waited.
You may get your wish sooner than you think, Sensations mused. "I hear talk of the sitter and we're all invited."

"True that," Finn agreed. Parenthood had been hard work, and he DID deserve a day off. After all, Maya went with him everywhere, even to work at the bookstore. He hardly had money to feed them, let alone leave her with a sitter every day. He didn't yet realize that Mort would probably make an excellent babysitter.
He glanced down into the basket to see the two girls huddled next to each other in the cart, and he couldn't help but smile. Maya looked cute for the first time in days. Her sour attitude always made him forget about how cute she really was. "Well that's just adorable. I think one sitter would do...I hope you've got a brave one!" He chuckled and thought about where best to keep them. "Well, I'm not sure what Iris is doing, but we could have them stay at my apartment. It's pretty clean." He never liked to ask Iris to babysit. She had too much else on her mind these days, with the god inside her beginning to consume her. And Finn certainly couldn't let the kids stay with Sh'khin--ever. Once he took over Iris' body, Finn already had plans to make him move out.
"Yeah, my place will work. I want a copy of that picture too. It's too cute."

"Well, let's get ourselves through the check out and over to your place. I'll call Eilonwy, have her fly over to watch the girls. Want to give me some directions?" She pulled out a pen, preparing to write on her hand.
Sen motioned to Mort to join him with the girls and he hopped up on to the blanket that was sprawled over Maya's and Sevan's laps. Hunkering down, making a little nest for himself, he said, "Cozy here. And warm. I know that does little for you, but it does wonders for me."

Finn proceeded to give Quinny directions to the apartment, making sure to fill in all of the details about what shop was on what corner and what bums would be sleeping where. He didn't live in the best of areas, that was for certain.
"She flies, you say? Well, I guess Phil the Bum won't give her any trouble then. At least she can fly over most of the trouble on the streets." It wasn't that the apartment was horrible--in fact, it had a lot of personality. It was just in a neighborhood that had once been better than it was today.
Mort shimmied up to the blanket, and eventually wiggled his way onto it, curling up in Maya's lap and watching Sen. Yes, warmth does little for me, but I can understand why you'd like it...
Maya, who now seemed to be more comfortable in the cart than anywhere else Finn had taken her, was getting sleepy, and her eyelids began to droop once she saw Mort take a place in her lap. "'Weeepppp," she managed to mutter before her eyes closed completely.
