((Well, I only know Spanish or Chinese and a little Japanese and French, soo..XD But I can guess pretty much what they're saying. XD And bablefish is good for crude translations.))

"This coat was the best thing I could find at the time!" Eponine argued back, neglecting to mention exactly what time that was.

Ah, well, that was one theory that went out the window. Angel not liking Wraith couldn't possibly mean he wasn't accepted. He was the one who founded LOTUS, for heaven's sake! Eponine petted the length of Angel's furry stomach, lavishing the attention on her that she demanded.

With this revelation, Eponine seemed a lot more amiable toward the previously 'unaccepted' German. "What language is that?" she asked curiously. "I'm from France, so..." Please let it not be French, she begged. But it didn't sound like French, or her idea of French, so...

Estrelas nodded. "Ah... Well, Ah might as well sew up thees..." she said, grabbing the sleeve and stitching up with practices stitches. Her brow creased. "Hey... Mista Faustus, ees you a German? Mees Samanta said she liked German shephards...." she offered. "Ah personally do not like shephards that much- they are often very crude-mannered." The fact that a German Shephard was a dog and not a real human shephard that escaped her mind.

Samantha looked over at Estrelas, smile and laughter in her eyes behind her glasses. "Esterlas, dear, a German Shepard is a type of dog, remember? And the language is German," she added to Eponine, smiling broadly over at her. "I speak French as well though, if you'd like to talk in your native language?" she asked innocently, her head tilted to one side. She'd never detected any sort of French accent in Eponine, but that didn't exactly mean anything.

Panic seized the machine, although she did well to hide it. "Ah, thank you for the offer Samantha, but really I'm too used to just speaking in English by now. I probably rather rusty on my French, even if it is my native language. And stop that!" The last comment, of course, was directed at Estrelas in a half-exasperated, half-laughing voice. "I told you, I'll probably be getting a new coat anyways soon - " disregarding the fact she had little to nothing on the financial situation " - so don't bother yourself with trivial matters!"

"Ger-man," she continued thoughtfully after scolding Estrelas one more time for good measure, yanking her sleeves back in an attempt to further discourage the Portuguese girl from her task. "German...never heard of it. And why are dogs called German shepherds?"

Estrelas smiled sheepishly and leaned down to pet Angel. "Ahh.... Well.... The name shauld be less... Misleading," she commented haughtily.

The Portugese girl frowned, but nevertheless tied off the loose threads and snapped it loose. "Well, when 'ou get a new one," she said, and continued to sew her embroidery. It was a large piece and she expected it would take long to finish. It was only when she had done another stitch in her deweing that she realized she had sewn Eponine's sleeve onto her sampler!

"Don't move!" she cried. "You might break the thread!"

Conversation had begun to pick up, and he was beginning to be left behind. He seemed to forget Samantha's statement-question in German, moving quickly to pick up on the next subject. Maybe Sam wouldn't tell the others. He laughed at Estrlas' confusion between the dog and the actual shepherd, certainly not meaning it derisively to hurt her, but... well, it was a bit funny to him.

"The dogs were never meant for friendliness at first," Faustus told her, trying to remember what he'd been reading on and off about his country. He'd mostly been looking at pictures, trying to get some kind of recognition of where he might have been from. Surely the books here, though, would help him a little more. "They were meant for work! A perfect soldier. Even now I don't doubt they're leading the blind or part of the police. I don't know how much they have changed since then... but like all dogs they are probably lovable. Their job must come first, though, for the good of others." Pleased with that statement, he nodded slightly. "German Shepherd is the English name. They are called shutzhund- protection dog, auf Deutsch. Better, right? I guess in a way they are a shepherd, though."

He arched a brow at Eponine, though some sympathy eventually reached him. Poor girl- couldn't remember her mother-tongue. He knew French, or at least that was what his mind had told him. He probably couldn't remember a lot of it now since he'd lost most of the rest of his memory. At her final statement, Faustus suddenly coughed violently in an attempt to keep from openly gawking at her. "The Germans... Your country boarders ours if you are from France. I think. I'm sure that our countries must touch somewhere. How could you not remember us with--" He was going to say the war(s), though quickly clammed himself up. He hadn't read everything on the wars yet. They'd seemed boring.

Estrelas stared blankly at Faustus as he talked about "guiding the blind" and "police dogs."

Whhhatttt? she thought. Dogs? In the police? Guiding the blind? Is he crazy? Dogs don't make arrests, dogs certainly can't be trusted with a blind old man.... Unless... Unless in the future... Huh.

She rearranged her expression into one of forged understanding. "Ahh..." she exclaimed, pretending she wasn't totally lost in on this "shutzhund" thing. "Ahhh, Ah see! Well, perhaps they can be trained to herd better than my filthy neighbors," she said.

"Shutzhund," Eponine pronounced carefully, marvelling the taste of another language on her tongue. It was awkward and strange, a harsh sound that grated against her English-hearing ears. Yet it seemed to fit, according to Faustus' description of the shutshund.

She paled visibly at the next reprimand, however. Germany...bordered France? This wasn't good. She'd have to come up with an explanation, quick. Relaxing her face into a more natural state, she hastily said, "Ah, well, I come from the time of the French Revolution...so I suppose we were always too busy looking within our country rather than out. Besides, I've never had much of an education. I apologize for my ignorance."

She was saved by answering further by suddenly noticing the dilemma at hand with Estrelas and her thread. "Ah! What have you done this time, Estrelas?" Eponine's hand fluttered to the side instinctively, then relaxed and stayed still. "Get it off me!"

"Eeeek! Eponine, don't move! Ya might break the thread! Hold on!" she cried, unthreading the needle. "Oh naw! Hold on, dun move!" The Portugese girl brought Eponine's hand and sleeve up to eye level. "Oh naw, the thread seems to be ah bit stuck!" She tugged on the middle loop until it reluctantly came loose. "Hold on- Angel! Pare isso! Pare-o!" she shouted as the rabbit mischiviously slammed all twelve pounds of her big body against Estrelas. "Ah, hold on! There we go..." She tugged the last loops free of Eponine's coat. "There we- Ugh, eet's stuck!" Estrelas angrily tugged harder.

Snap.

"Uh---uh---uh....." She held two stubs of thread in her hand that had previously been connected to her embroidery. "OH NO!"

Samantha, having been content to simply watch the conversation as it began to center around Germany, thinking that no matter how well she spoke the language, and loved history, that she wouldn't know as much about it as Fautus, as he came from there. She had sort of been drifting off into her imagination, wondering if she'd be able to travel to other countires with LOTUS, as they had gone to Ireland for the Halloween party. Blinking out of her day dream, her golden eyes swept over to Estrelas and Eponine, and quickly took in the comical situation. Smiling softly, she moved over to them. "Do want me to go fetch some scissors, so that you can detangle yourselves?"

"I am sure of it." Faustus mused in response to Estrelas' final comment about the dogs. To Eponine he simply nodded in understanding. He didn't know what the French Revolution was to save his life. Any revolution by the French somehow sounded like a joke to him. There were many jests in Germany that said they weren't good at any more than making food and escaping. His train of thought, however, was broken by the thread ordeal.

"Scissors? Why don't you just rip it? It's already snapped..." Simple man. "And her coat was torn before then."

Estrelas tugged out the loops easily, now that her thread was snapped in two..

"Ahhh, eet's fine," she said to Samantha and Fautus. "Just... My embroidery's.... Ah have to start this row over," she said sadly at the lost work before drawing out more thread from a pocket in her apron and relooping the thread.

"Don't worry, Estrelas, I'm sure with your...embroidery skills, you'll catch up again quickly." Then it occurred to Eponine that she should probably say sorry. But wouldn't that be weird? Maybe they hadn't even noticed, and if she said it now, it would be rude and weird. Better be only weird than rude AND weird.

"Uh...sorry, Estrelas. Anything I can do to help?" She looked around desperately for help, as if it might appear out of thin air in the form of a Dummy's manual of How To Act Like A Normal Human or (even better) a small cardboard box in which she might crawl into and hide in or (best of all) a time machine to rewrite and correct this whole thread fiasco.

...or maybe she was just overeacting.

((Just overreacting? Poor Eponine, she's gonna drop dead of apoplexy any moment- oh wait, her brain's a computer chip. Nevermind...))

Eponine's flustered thoughts might have shown, because Estrelas laughed and patted the other woman's hand. "Eet's okay, Ah'll catch up. Jist a row," she said, beginning to stitch on once more. "No aone warry, eet's good!"

Angel flipped over on her side again, snoozing to show she was almost perfectly comfortable. She licked Samantha's hand gently but shot an angry glare at Faustus, which Estrelas noticed.

"Ah am sorry sah... She... Angel doesn't seem to like men much...." she apologized. "Ah don't know why!"
