Prolixity
Prox drowses on the couch, a book propped open over his chest. He's just come back from a trading trip that netted them a decent profit - it's been a really tiring day.

Arrikanez
Arri is, as per usually, in the bedroom with the egg for now. But soon enough, he makes his appearance, looking healthy, and fit, in stark contrast to Prox's tired and worn form.
"Love? You look exhausted."

Prolixity
"Takes a lot of energy to go through that Gate. Worth it, though." He opens his eyes and smiles up at Arri. "You look good."

Arrikanez
"Thanks, you don't. Bed?"
He moves over, and extends his hand, kissing Prox's, and pulling him up.

Prolixity
He laughs and allows himself to be pulled up. "Sounds like an excellent idea."

Arrikanez
He embraces him right then and there, and strokes Prox's hair, softly.

Prolixity
"Mmmm." He rests his head on his mate's shoulder, yawning a little. "Going to check me for magical fluctuations before I get some sleep?"

Arrikanez
"Sure thing. Hold still."
He looks up into his mate's eyes, and watches them for the telltale signs of his pupils widening and contracting without any apparent reason. He also tunes his hearing to his mate's heartbeat and breathing.

Prolixity
His pupils are wider than they should be in this light, and he's breathing a little shallowly. But his heartbeat is strong and on cadence.

Arrikanez
"Not too bad this time around. I'll listen to your lungs better in the bedroom."

Prolixity
"Gotcha. Lead on."

Arrikanez
He leads off into the room, clutching Prox's hand as tightly as he can without hurting him.

Prolixity
He follows, concentrating mostly on not tripping over the stairs.

Arrikanez
He pulls him into the room, shuts the door, and pretty much "shoves" him onto the bed playfully.

Prolixity
He pretends to yelp and lets himself flop, sprawling.

Arrikanez
He moves over to grab the stethoscope from its place by eggu, and climbs onto the bed with his mate.

Prolixity
He relaxes, undoing the buttons on his shirt lazily.

Arrikanez
"You're way ahead of me, love."

Prolixity
"Just helping you out." He purrs.

Arrikanez
He curls up beside him, and puts the stethoscope on, pressing it to his love's back.
"Deep breaths for me."

Prolixity
He breathes deeply. There's a small rasp in the sound; it's probably the same as last time, when a kind of loose fluid web formed due to the passage between worlds.

Arrikanez
"It's going to be to bed and rest with you, love. It won't take long to clear up."

Prolixity
"I get better at that gate every time I try it." He doesn't protest the diagnosis, though.

Arrikanez
He nips at Prox's ear playfully, and moves the stethoscope to his mate's chest, listening to his heartbeat.

Prolixity
"Tease," he says, amused. His heartbeat is steady and strong, apparently unaffected this time.

Arrikanez
"Heart sounds good. You ARE getting better."

Prolixity
"Thank you." He smiles up at Arri. "Maybe next time I won't come back sick at all."

Arrikanez
"That would be wonderful."
He grins, and takes off the stethoscope, handing it to Prox, and curling against him.
"Shall I get eggu?"

Prolixity
"Would you?" He loops the instrument around his neck.

Arrikanez
He nods, and gets up, moving over to the satiny pillow the egg rests on, carefully scooping it up, and cradling it to him as he brings it over.

Prolixity
He stretches an arm out so Arri and the egg can settle against him.

Arrikanez
He curls against his mate, and starts to purr.
"Check the egg?"

Prolixity
He nods and puts on the stethoscope, setting the diaphragn against the shell and listening for the quick little heartbeat within.

Arrikanez
"How is he?"

Prolixity
"Sounds healthy. He must be getting close to hatching, I think... "

Arrikanez
"You think so? He.. doesn't have any of my problems, does he?"

Prolixity
"If he does, they're not showing up." He pets the leathery surface of the egg affectionately.

Arrikanez
"That's very, very good news."

Prolixity
"Yeah. Hopefully they won't. Uh - we should talk about names before he does hatch."

Arrikanez
"Names.... I'd completely forgotten."

Prolixity
"Do you have anything in mind?"

Arrikanez
"Something magical."

Prolixity
"Appropriate." He smiles. "Something sort of traditional?"

Arrikanez
"Ummm... Something.. something wise-sounding."

Prolixity
"I'd like him to have a traditional Dream name as well, but not for his first name."

Arrikanez
"Merlin? That was the name of a wizard."

Prolixity
"Suppose he was a real person? I've heard that myth in at least five worlds. ... I like it."

Arrikanez
"Make it spelled with a Y?"

Prolixity
"Merlyn?" He tries the feel of the name. "Yeah. I like that."

Arrikanez
He looks at the egg.
"Merlyn, you hear us? You like it?"

Prolixity
He laughs a little. "It's a good name."

Arrikanez
He smiles softly, and leans against his mate.
"Second name?"

Prolixity
"Hm." He considers. "My grandfather's name was Saien - it's a traditional name, from what I can find. Do you like the sound of that?"

Arrikanez
He nods, and snuggles close into Prox.
"I like it. It's very mysterious sounding."

Prolixity
"Merlyn Saien Sarihe." He taps the egg with a finger. "Hear that? That's you."

Arrikanez
He looks at the egg sleepily, yawning, and makes as if to scoop it up and take it back to its bed.

Prolixity
"Leave it? I'd like to have it with me while I rest ... "

Arrikanez
"Alright."
He smiles, and moves it closer, curling around it and his mate at the same time.

Prolixity
He settles himself and tugs the blanket up, closing his eyes as he realizes again how tired he is.

Arrikanez
He curls, resting his head on his mate's chest, with one arm around the egg to keep it from going anywhere.

A large blue form slid out from under the bed to stare at the egg while the household slept. Lapis was fascinated by the object his master carried around. It smelled of life, and of something unidentifiable.

The comet serpent floated down to rest on the floor, propping his weight on his winglike claws, and observed the egg with turquoise eyes. He had attempted several times to poke his head over his master's shoulder and get a good sniff at the egg in the carrier, but he had gotten his muzzle pushed gently away and told to go away every time.

A bright tongue flickered out to touch the leathery shell. Lapis considered it. Slowly a thought formed in the serpent's brain.

Love. Protect. Love!

Prox's journal
Lapis has taken to following me around the house. If it's possible for something that floats to be underfoot, he certainly is that. He constantly trills and chirps and purrs at the egg. I can't imagine what he's thinking; his kind don't come from eggs and I don't think he's ever seen anything hatch. - Having a six-foot floating dragon-thing hanging on my every move is a touch inconvenient, but he's not doing any harm.

The egg must be getting close to hatching; the shell seems taut, and I can feel true movement inside it often. I'm getting nervous.

Midnight, or thereabouts. Perhaps a little past the darkest hour of the night. The egg rocked in its nest in the crib. Movement began inside the shell, making the leathery surface of the artificial womb ripple and bulge. It made no sound, but on a deeper level, a sense of urgency rippled outward from the egg. Out, out out out, want out - It was nothing so simple as words, but rather an obscure and unclear feeling.

It permeated Prox's dreams, and he tossed and turned uneasily for a few minutes before the nature of the emotion got through and he woke. "What - who - Merlyn?" He shook Arri's shoulder. "Wake up - I think the egg is hatching!"

Arri started a bit, and yawned, sitting up, and looking over at eggu.
"Hatching?! You sure?!"
He crawled to the end of the bed, and peeked at the eggu.
"It's rocking! Look!"

Prox pulled his bathrobe on and padded over to pick the egg up, taking a careful hold on it as it wobbled in his grasp. "Definitely," he said, his voice hushed. "It's time. Um. Get the blanket and towels and stuff?"
PostPosted: Tue Aug 02, 2005 8:07 pm

Arri nodded excitedly, and scampered off to the bathroom, flinging the cupboard open, and grabbing a few large, soft towels. He then went to the other closet, and grabbed two or three blankets, and a baby blanket. He ran to the medical kit afterwards, grabbed it, and put it on top of the pile of things in his arms, balancing, and carrying all of it back into the room with him.

Prox knelt on the floor, egg in his lap, watching it rock and ripple. He gave Arri a wordless nervous loving smile when his mate hurried back in, and took a towel to place the egg on. "I don't - do we need to break the shell?" he muttered, as much to himself as to Arri.

The shell strained, and a spot near the crown of it stretched a bit more than the rest, leaving a soft dimple when the pressure within withdrew. The sense of urgency remained around it. Out out out. Out now.

Arri knelt by his mate with the baby blanket folded in his hands, and the stethoscope from the kit draped around his neck. He was almost vibrating.

"I dunno... I don''t think we have to break the shell... I read something about that. That breaking the shell itself, gives the baby the strength it needs... or something along those lines."

"Okay ... " Prox trailed off and simply watched the egg, tail flicking anxiously. "You can do it," he whispered.

The egg rocked and stretched and fell still, then began to move again. It wasn't an easy task, obviously enough. The struggle seemed to go on for an interminable amount of time, wriggling and pushing and working at the tough skin of the egg; but the weak spot near the egg's crown stretched further and further with each push, the almost-green color lightening as it weakened. When it finally broke, it did so with a very faint snapping sound.

The pressure from inside the egg was withdrawn, and the egg went still again, resting from the effort.

Arri was hovering almost worse than Prox, and if he had been in wolf form, his tail would have been wagging 20 miles a minute. He held the blanket ready to receive the baby when it finally finished hatching, watching anxiously, holding his breath and not realizing it.

Prox reached forward and cautiously tugged at the rip in the eggshell with a claw, widening it. "Come on," he said softly. "You can do it." He glanced at Arri for reassurance. It was nothing like the arrival of any of the other children. Nothing at all.

Two smaller claws appeared in the rip in the shell and pulled. Now that the break had been made, the shell tore much more easily.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 02, 2005 8:57 pm

"C'mon, little one.... C'mon... You can do it."

He reached forward, and very gently stroked the paw that was doing the tearing with one finger.

"C'mon - I know you can. Merlyn..."

He looked back at Prox, and readied the blanket, spreading it out to receive the kitten when it's time.

Prox helped remove the shell, bit by bit, almost holding his breath. The bits of shell were moist and flexible and tore cleanly away.

Within the egg was a kitten, his fur damp and mussed; he was pudgy and clumsy-looking, his fur pale grey with traces of tabby markings on his tail and ears, and a startling small shock of black hair on his head. He tore the pieces of eggshell off himself with his feline face scrunched tightly in effort and determination.

Merlyn wasn't beautiful; but at the same time, he was one of the most beautiful things ever. He opened cloudy-blue eyes to stare up at the two giant shapes looming over him. Then he opened his tiny mouth and yowled loudly in protest at being damp, cold, and no longer in the egg.
