Aiden the Ringmaster

PostPosted: Mon Jan 22, 2007 7:33 pm

Aiden turned to look at Maxem, with a furrowed brow and a bit of a puzzled look on his face.

"Well, yes, it is French," Aiden began, choosing his words carefully, "But I'm not quite sure why you think it's 'put offish'. Besides, I rather like it. Has a nice ring," He said, as he smiled to himself.

"So. Right. Trailers. Letssee. That one over there's Ankita's. Not sure if you've met her or not. She's really sweet."

He pointed over in another direction.

"And that one's Scarlett's. You should talk to her for official-type business. Oh, see that one back there? Dahli owns that one. That one's Grete's, as I'm sure you know," He rolled his eyes, and began to walk toward the big top.

"Over this way is the eating area. Not quite sure what to call it. It needs some fancy name. Are you getting all this?"

‘As nice of a ring though it might have… “Menacing” seems far too strong a word.’ Maxem concluded to herself, wondering if Aiden actually spoke French at all.

She nodded politely until Aiden made his comments, and then once again about the food place.

“Oh, yes. I think I’ve got the general idea of the trailers so far… As for this dining hall; In keeping with your theme, why not call it ‘Endroit des accidents malpropres’. Or rather, that is all I have seemed to have here.”

Skipping around a bit, Maxem turned to look at Aiden. “You know, I’ve met a good many people, but none of them seem to have much in common with me. I suppose that that makes a lot more sense what with these different worlds… But you said you were from America, same as me. I hope that maybe that means we’ll get along well.”

With a little sigh of relief, she clasped her hands behind her back, feeling almost like a little schoolgirl again.

“But Phewwww. Nineteen-thirteen? How old would I be then? Oh, lord! I’d be into my fifties by then. Here’s hoping you didn’t know me then. I can't imagine I'd be a pretty sight.”

Aiden smirked at Maxem, slightly surprised by her sudden burst of energy. Though, perhaps, he concluded, it was there the entire time, and he just hadn't noticed until now.

"Maybe we will get along, then. You never know," Aiden laughed again, and began walking, "In your fifties? Well, I suppose that won't really matter now that you're here, and we're all year-jumbled. Chances that we met are pretty slim, and I probably would've recognized you anyway."

Aiden smiled, and kept walking, just assuming that Maxem was following. He stopped abruptly, and turned around.

"Did I say we were going to the props trailer? I don't remember. Well, anyways, I figure we could go in there, and then I could show you where the dressing rooms are, and such. Sound good?"

“Here’s hoping you wouldn’t.” She giggled and gave him a wide smile; it was nice to have another person she could see as a friend. He seemed a lot more cheerful than a lot of people she had met, and it was pretty nice to be bouncy.

She trotted behind casually, taking the time to give little glances around between her occasional glimpses of Aiden’s back.

“It sounds peachy to me; I’m so excited to get started!” As corny as she may have sounded, Maxem really was itching to get a hold of some explosives. In fact, she still had the notion of letting off a little show for Lucrezia later just to let off a little steam (Or sparks, whatever suits your fancy.)

Actually… That didn’t seem too bad of an idea.

“This may be a bit bold, what with just meeting you and all… But tonight, with your pardon, I was thinking of showing my room mates a little treat with the sparklers and cherry bombs… If it’s alright with you, of course. So Uhm… If you would like to come… You’re invited, by all means.”

Stopping at a particular trailer, Aiden reached in his pocket and withdrew a small, old-fashioned key. He opened it up, and walked in, looking around, as so that he didn't trip over anything.

"Here we are! This would be the props trailer. You can probably find everything you need here, and then some," He explained, smiling.

Aiden thought a second about Maxem's proposal. It seemed a bit risky, to say the least, but, he figured that she was, in fact, and expert. And if she wasn't, well, then how did she get the job at Cirque in the first place?

"I suppose you could use some sparklers or something," Aiden said slowly, hoping that he wouldn't regret it later, "Just as long as, you know, you don't burn anything down. That might cause a bit of a problem."

“Aha, so fire is bad. That’s why I keep getting run out of towns!” She joked (And sincerely hoped that he had caught the facetious tones in her voice), as she stepped into the trailer.

Her hand found its way to a box with a slight thump, and the red head gave Aiden a stern look to help prove her point. “Unless the dirt outside is somehow drenched in gasoline and scattered with dried hay, nothing will ignite. Those things are less dangerous than a cigar.”

With her speech done, her attention went to the box she was resting on. Anxiously, almost like a girl snooping through her mother’s private treasures, she lifted the lid off of the crate and leaned it against a wall. Quickly, almost instantly, her attention snapped back to the boxes contents… Which were less than pleasing.

A frown and a blush spread across her face as she quickly relidded the box and dusted off her hands. She turned from it and coughed a bit, directing her attention on yet another box.

“I’m not particularly sure if you’re aware… But apparently someone’s been stashing pin-ups in here.”

Aiden laughed at Maxem's joke about the towns. He sincerely hoped that she hadn't really been run out of anywhere, but, he figured that she was just joking, and took it as such.

His face fell, however, at Maxem's discovery.

"Erm," He began, internally livid at whomever had put those in the props trailer. That definately wasn't the place for them.

"That's not a good thing. So, I'd figure you definately won't find any firecrackers in there," Aiden joked, a slight smile returning to his face, "But, those should probably be tossed out. Oh well, back to business. Is there anything in particular that I should be looking for right now?"

“I’d say anything marked with ‘T.N.T.’ or ‘DANGEROUS’ in big red letters, but that’s just me.” With a wide grin, she was starting to get into a sort of groove. This could turn out fun.

She frowned at the box of pin-ups yet again, scoffed a bit, and reached for it. With a heaving motion, she got it out the door with quite a bit of effort. At the very least, it was done; one less box to look through.

With that done, she moved to yet another box, this time finding an array of what appeared to be clown accessories. She sorted through a moment, folded them up, and closed the box. Secretly, she hoped she may find cute dresses or costumes she might borrow for fun later, but that would, of course, come after finding things to blow up.

It took a bit longer of rummaging through yet a third box, but Maxem found a small package of matches. Matches, though easy to find, were at least a start in the right direction.

“Hey… Aiden, right? I know I’m kind of a gamble to have around, what with my occupation being so dangerous… But I’m giving you my word; I’m not going to make you regret hiring me. “

"Ha!" Aiden laughed, as he sorted through another box. In it, he found an abundance of white and light pink ruffles. Some of it was for outfits, and some of it was on a small white parasol.

"I haven't seen this stuff for ages! Things from our old tightrope walker. She left quite a while ago. I guess all of her stuff was just put in this box. Even her trademark parasol!"

Now keeping a look-out for anything labeled as 'dangerous', Aiden had a slightly better grasp on what he needed to find. Though, there was more than a few things that could be labeled as 'dangerous'. Oh, well.

He looked up just slightly to look at Maxem, and he thought about what she had said.

"Well, Miss Mulligen, all you have to do is prove it. I have confidence in your act. Plus, the audience seems to like anything particularly flashy," Aiden replied, with a smile.

“Oh, yes. The young ones at least. Older folks seem to be a bit bothered. I’ve yet to have any heart attacks happen on my watch, though, and I intend to keep it that way.” Yes, the older folks in her town did despise her for how loud and outlandish she and her hobbies were, but at least their hearts were in tact!

It took a bit of effort for Maxem to realize that the crate she had been trying to open had been closed with a fair amount of tape. She frowned at it. Tape should be banned- keeping her from these mysterious crate contents. Anything that had to be sealed shut with tape must clearly be of some kind of worth.

“Hey, have you a knife over there? Or do I get to use brute force to figure out what is in this thing?”

Aiden hadn't thought about older people with heart problems. He didn't let it get to him anyway. He just hummed to himself, and smiled brightly.

"A knife? Well, no, actually, I don't. But...wait!" He suddenly went tearing through one of the boxes, and withdrew some sort of curved blade. He walked over to Maxem, and glanced down at the box she was struggling with.

"I don't quite remember what show this was used for, but, I'm fairly sure that it can cut through this!" Slowly, he placed the blade to cut open the box. Then, with one quick motion, he had opened it, and then stepped back to allow Maxem to look at its contents.

“Aha! Here we go! The best stuff is always in hard to reach places!”

Beaming up from the box were small pouches with labels practically screaming of their dangerous contents. Reaching in and picking one such pouch (The one that seemed the loudest in its warnings, even), Maxem smiled like a child in a candy shop.

“This is it. Funny it’d be in here, but this is some bonafide powder. Thank you, really. I couldn’t have found this without you.”

As gingerly as she could, the bag was nestled with the others, and she let out a tiny squeal of joy.

“I can’t wait to get started~”

Aiden jumped at Maxem's shrill squeal. He hadn't been expecting excitement to that level. In fact, he was shocked that Maxem squealed at all. It didn't quite seem like some thing she would do.

"Well, I'm glad that you could find it in here!" Aiden said happily. Noticing all of the warning labels on not only the box, but the pouches, he added, "Just, you know, try to be careful."

Aiden looked around at the other boxes, and tried to recall if Maxem said that she needed any other sort of materials.

"Is there anything else that I could help you look for? Do you already have an outfit for performances?"
PostPosted: Sun Feb 18, 2007 9:22 pm

“Will I actually need one?” With a pouty look back and a genuine concern of whether she was going to be seen or not, Maxem pondered over just what purpose an outfit would serve if she worked in the background.

In fact, unless they found a way to make her some heroine actress with explosions, she wasn’t sure she was supposed to be on stage at all. “I mean, I’m just supposed to be back-up, right? I didn’t think I’d have an act or anything that would need me to get pretty over.”

She looked at the box of explosives yet again, imagining a cheering crowd and Maxem on stage with her blond wig and a slinky little dress… ‘The Blond Bombshell~’ being called out by Aiden as she was serenaded with cheers from adoring fans… Whatever she could be doing on stage, however, failed to come to mind. Maybe she’d think of something later, but the idea of standing on stage and lighting bombs didn’t seem like too interesting of an act.

Aiden shrugged.

"Well, it's just your own preference, I suppose. If you don't want anything, then don't get anything," He said plainly, afraid that he might've sounded harsh.

"I mean, it's completely fine if you don't want to wear anything special," He quickly added.

He wasn't exactly sure of what else to say at that point. Maxem was obviously deep in her own fantasy. Of what, Aiden wasn't exactly sure, but it was obvious that she was thinking about something. He smiled at her, and waved his hand slightly to see if she would return from staring off into space.
