"Because... he needs to get herbs for his sickly Nanny and that's where they are growing." the cat said, thinking fast. "He's right, he helped me out so now I'll repay my debt by helping him. Now, Patricia, if you'll excuse us. We'd best be on our way. Let's go Richard," he said in a tone that brooked no arguements.

"But..but...you can't!" Richard whispered into the cat's ear. "You just gave her my----"
"Calm down!" Sparticus hissed. "Do you really think I would give her something so valuable? I'd replaced that old relic the moment I found you had it!"
"Oh," Richard replied, relieved. "Hey, wait a minute! You were digging through my stuff?" he asked accusingly.
"Well, there wasn't much to dig through. Besides, I consider that item to be rightfully mine anyway." said Sparticus.
"Yours?" Richard asked curiously, and a bit louder than he had hoped to sound. "How is it yours?" Patricia, who was about to turn to leave, stopped to listen further.
"Yours, hmm?" she asked Sparticus.
"Erm, mine? No!" Sparticus replied hastily. "I've no idea what you mean, patricia! Anyway, we should be going now, eh, Rich?"
"Umm, yes," said Richard. "We'll be leaving. See you soon!" He turned to depart, hoping Sparticus would silently follow.
"See her soon..." Sparticus muttered, as he followed Richard. "I don't plan on it."

"Hey Sparticus," Richard said when Patricia was finally out of earshot,"are we really going to go to that mountain?" "Are you insane! I wouldn't go there if your life depended on it!" "Oh ok... wait you said my life not your life..." Sparticus scoffed at him, "Of course, I wouldn't risk my own life."

"Then why are you coming with me!" Richard asked, clearly feeling annoyed.
"Ahem," Sparticus replied. "I'm taking you to the mountains, so I believe it is you who is coming with me."
"Whatever," Richard mumbled back. "No use talking to some crazy cat."

"Crazy cat hmm? But who is crazier the crazy cat or the peasant who follows the crazy cat?" "Wha?" "Well let's go Richy." They trudged towards the mountain going a steady but slow pace. "Um why exactly are you going to the mountains Spartacus?" Richard asked. "It's not wise asking crazy cats questions. You'll just get a crazy answers, Richy." "Are there really herbs that will help my nanny?" Richard asked. "Why is your nanny so impotant to you?" "Because I love her."

Sparticus ignored Richard's reply and continued down the grassy path.
"I suppose you wouldn't know anything about love," Richard muttered to himself.
"Sparticus stopped silently and turned to Richard. "Don't ever tell me that I don't know anything about love." His cheery grin was suddenly gone, and his expression was as cold as his voice.

"Sure, whatever," Richard replied. He stared at the cat's small face, unable to decipher it's expression.
"Whatever," Sparticus mumbled in a mocking tone.

Without another word, Richard and Sparticus continued walking, until they reached a small village. Tired and hungry, they stopped at the nearest inn.

At the inn the inn keepers wife bustled toward them happy as a clam and asked" What'll ya have gent and oh ho Sparticus eh? Up to no good as usual? Now what'll it be?" Sparticus was having the house's special lamb chops and a jug of ale, and Richard was having a ham sandwich also with ale. She took their orders and left fo the kitchens.

Richard ignored Sparticus and Sparticus took on a rather indifferent attitude towards Richard while they waited for the orders.
It didn't take long for the inn keeper's wife to come bustling back again with there food and drink, Sparticus gave a smile the best a cat can and they both began to eat still with little conversation.

Finishing his meal, Richard waited impatiently for Sparticus. "Are you done yet, cat?"
Sparticus grinned. "Not quite, Richie! Don't be impatient now!"
"That is it!" Richard screamed. "We're going...NOW!" He kicked Sparticus's meal across the floor. The bowl smashed right into another customer's boot, while the lambchops were scattered aroubd it. Richard picked up the cat's ale, and was about to dump it right on Sparticus's head, but the clever little cat darted under the table. Under the same table of the man whose boot had broken bowl pieces around it.
Sparticus curled around the man's boot, as Richard dumped the ale right down on Sparticus. Or so he thought, before Spartucis had once again cleverly scampered away.
"Hey!" said Richard. "Get back here!"
As he turned to follow the cat, a large hand grasped his shoulder. "So ye like chasing wee little kitties, eh?"
Richard turned to see the man whose boot Sparrticus had curled around. "No. You see, he's no ordinary cat. He's a TALKING cat," said Richard.
"And I suppose this "talking cat" madse ye dump yer ale on me foot, eh?
"W-w-w-well...,"Richard stuttered, "yes."
"Well then lad, let me teach ye a lesson here!" the man replied. He grinned. "Me friends ought to help too." A crowd of other men stood up around the inn.

Innocent bystanders ran out of the inn as if they were being chased by the devil himself. Richard cringed at the sound of bottles breaking, while Sparticus leaned against the entrance door, observing the mess with an amused glanced.
"Need any help, Richy?" Sparticus asked cheerfully.

"See! didn't you just here him!" Richard practically cried.
"Here what boy, your 'talkin' cat'?"
"Yes. Didn't you here him?"
"Oh sure boy is he tellin' you to pour ale on my other boot now to?"
Again Sparticus's voice rang in a rather cheery manner, "Oh Richy I'm sure that these nice men will be ever so happy to 'help' an insane boy who hears talking cats."
"Your mocking me cat, and what do you mean insane? Why can't they hear you?" He turned to the man holding him, practically pleading,"You really can't hear him?"

" O' course they can't hear me! you trying to take me for a fool?" sparticus said sounding as if he was going to laugh if that was possible for a cat talking or otherwise.
" Now is not the time the time sparticus! What do I do?" Richard whispered nervously.
" Hey kid! I'm talkin to you. Drop the poor cat and surrender you already caused to much trouble in this inn." the quickly advancing man snapped.
" Now would be a good time to use your daddy's big way short Richy." sparticus said definitely laughing.
