O saw this on tv and this person askted Green day what they were if they were rock or somthing and the Billy joy answerd that they were nothing they are what they wanna be and they dont put themself in any catagori ...yeah

Kind of a punk-revival/punk-pop/post grunge mix. Yeah, I think they're punk, I think punk's a broader music genre than some people think it is.

who cares xd ! if they dont fall into a catogory then theyre just Green Day, one of the best bands that have ever walked the shitty floor.they dont need a catogory anyway. they need supportive fans like you! arrow so just keep on keepin' on Green Day, and screw anyone you doesnt like the way you make music. I don't really know what they are, so I just class them as rock. They class themselves as punk rock, the BBC thinks that they are nu metal, my friend says they are pop, magazines say that they are punk pop but the weirdest of all has to be media player classing Walking Contradiction as blues.

Peeko they arent alternative thats for sure, you cant be alternative to the mainstream if you are mainstream.
I consider them pop-punk, but not all of the songs fit that. They are general rock. Some albums are more punk...some are more alternative, some are definitely pop-punk. Some (like Warning) I may go as far to just call "pop rock."
My media player almost always classifies them as pop-punk. I've also gotten general alternative. I've gotten punk rock, as well as rock. (I just noticed...it said "Johnny B. Good" is punk rock... xd Don't trust these things.)
It's debatable. But do they need a genre? They did a freaking rock opera...They can do anything they want. If they wanted to put out a classical album, they're allowed to. They don't have to be classified as this or that. Nor does any person.
Goth rock? Nu-metal?! eek gonk NOT Green Day.

Mainstream award shows never know whats alternative ans whats not, its alternative cause they never heard of it xp They are pop-rock or guitar pop, they started off with alot of punk influence but they were never a punk rock band.
