The new chart look rather familiar from when he was studying and doing that homework assignment for the last one of Raven's classes that he had taken, "It kinda looks like the chart for the four basic elements." He said, agreeing with what Sahra had said. The colors matched up with the elements and so did the number of them and what he had learned from the book then again from Mr. Barkhelm's class, "Wind, Water, Fire, and Earth." He hoped he was right, then again Sahra could be right and it could be the seasons instead. He figured he would find out.
Vorel perked up for a moment at the mention of the elements, looking over at Ligeia's hands expectantly... then laid his head back down on his front legs when his owl didn't seem to be casting the spell he was showed in another class. So not casting then yet?

Indigo perked visibly on being told her question was "interesting"; she gave every appearance of listening intently to Raven's suggestion, nodding along unconsciously. "Okay!" she chirped.
Turning back to her notes, she separated a section of the page into two columns under the header "waxing" and "waning," jotting down what she could remember of Raven's comments on both. Her antennae twitched at the mention of the three-fold law, and she glanced up from her notes. "What's--" ... "--er, nevermind!" She could probably ask later. It seemed like it would be a dumb question to ask now.
With her partner's attention (and foot) off of her, Citrine stirred at the sounds of the other dragons rustling around. She raised her head a little off the floor, opening her eyes and glancing around the room, before sitting up all the way and resting her chin on Indigo's desk, peering at the new chart. After a moment of study, she rumbled low in her throat, and nosed around for one of Indigo's loose pens.
Absently, the velvet worm rested a lower hand on the copper's head, writing busily with the other as she took down the chart. Since Ligeia and Sahra had already ventured their guesses, Indi merely chimed in with, "Uhuh. Or a compass?"

"I would like you to tell me that," Raven said to Earako sternly. Honestly, did the students think she was going to hand them all of the answers? They had to work for things, just as she'd had to. In reality she was doing them a favor, exercising their minds and imaginations. And they, in repayment, asked silly questions. It figured.
Fortunately her other pupils were more compliant. The elements, seasons, a compass. "Very good. Miss Karchekanon, Mister Solon, and Miss Preston are all correct. It is a map of the compass points and their relationships. The compass points are, for those of you who can't be bothered to remember, North, East, South, and West." She touched each point with her wand- for it must have been a wand that made things light up like it did- as she named them. "They all have a number of correspondences. For example, they correspond elementally to Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. They correspond in terms of guardian spirits with Gnomes, Sylphs, Salamanders, and Undines. And they correspond seasonally to- any guesses?"

Ligeia quickly sketched down the newest chart throwing in the Directions first, then the elements, and finally the guardians, "Ahh. The Salamander." He murmured, as he wrote out its name. It was the first of the creatures he'd read about in that book on summoning. Before he learned from Mr. Barkhelm that ones element of choice was choosen not by astrology but by ones soul.
So then according to the two base elements he used to create his ice element the guardians he should check into seeing what Undine and Sylphs were.
He tapped his pencil against the chart a moment then took a guess at one of them, "I think that Summer would go with Fire."He said, it made sense to him since both Fire and Summer were warm and South which went with Fire was warm too. Well... unless you went to South. He got to thinking on the others as they didn't click together as simply.

Alaqua wrote down the compass points, their elements, and their guardians. She thought for a moment on what season would go with each element. "Summer would be Fire... Winter would be Water... Spring would be Earth? And Fall would be Air?" Ala ventured to guess.

Raven tsked and shook her head. "Only one out of four, I'm afraid. Any other takers? Perhaps someone who studied?"
She didn't clarify which one Alaqua had gotten right, however the red quadrant of the chart began to glow slightly, just visible to anyone who was looking up front.

"Uhmm." Indigo's nose wrinkled up and she tapped her lower lip with the pen as she thought. "Winter is Air, Spring is Water, an' Fall is Earth?" she volunteered at last. Then she giggled at herself; spring and water. That was kind of silly.
Citrine grabbed the pen that had caught her attention, dragging it off the desk and sticking it in her mouth, before chewing contemplatively. Hm. Tasted weird.

Well, maybe not then. Earako winced a little at the rebuke, lowering her head and adding details to the chart as others chimed in with actual answers. Of course, it took more than that to actually hurt the bat's feelings, but Raven had certainly managed to shut her up. Besides which, she really had no idea on this one, so what could she say, that wouldn't be a question.

At that response, Raven closed her eyes and rubbed her forehead with her free hand. Why did none of her students seem to open books? Didn't any of them have discipline? Initiative? Apparently not. But they would, if she had anything to do with it.
"No, Miss Preston. Take note. Summer," she stated, pointing to the already illuminated red section. "Autumn. Winter. Spring." In turn, she pointed to the blue, green, and yellow sections. "In addition, these elements and colors correspond with many other things, such as certain signs of the Zodiac, planets, animals, metals, herbs, rituals, and of course, magical tools."
Now, she was fairly sure she had gotten their attention. "Can anyone name me a tool one might use for magic?"

Already rather embarassed by her wrong answers to the previous question, Ala kept her head down over her notebook, writing what Raven had said. She wasn't going to try again. It'd only make her look stupid if she messed up again. Of course, there had been that other person who guessed after her, but...

Ligeia's pencil moved quickly over the paper to write down what the teacher was saying then tilted his head to the side as he he thought on her newest question. Magic tools... would saying a wand and magic tomes be far to simple? Was she looking for another answer, something less obvious?
"Ahh... There are wands and tomes." He dared to guess, then thought on it a moment more, "I've seen a few things about certain gems too... though maybe the gems are part of the wands since wands seem to have the gems on them?" The last part was him musing out loud.

All to quiet, she was, she hadn't made a sound since her last answer. Sahra had been so busy taking down notes on her spiral crested notebook that she had forgotten to stay active in the lecture.
So it did have everything to do with seasons, and elements? And all the other things associated with each sector! It made sense, a lot of sense, it made her feel relieved.
She matched up all the seasons with their rightful element on her paper, Hm, Summer, Fire, and the Salamander. She thought, skimming over the last three, sculpting it into her memory.
Ephrem had been watching the teacher with wide eyes, this all was very curious to him. Not too much made much sense! No matter to him though, as long as her knew how to run and maneuver he figured he would get through life just fine.
"A magical tool?" She repeated to herself softly, running one claw across her lined notebook paper. A wand, of course, that made sense. Sahra perked one ear up as she heard the object be spoken, her ears lolled, and she slipped back into thought. What else? "An athame or chalice? Or do you mean things like talismans and runes?"

Sadly, Earako's knowledge of magic ran more to the fairy tale than the acutal, and even then she'd always paid more attention to the princess in trouble then the evil mage who was causing it. So when she tried to think of tools, she only got vague memories of storybook pictures, nothing particularly helpful.
Still, Ligeia had said wands. And he was smarter than she was! So maybe she wouldnt get in trouble for mentioning something else she remembered from books? Wands were always there, but so was a witch, throwing strange things into a pot over a fire. Things like Indigo had mentioned earlier.
"How about a cauldron?" She asked, a bit hesitant to voice her suggestion.

Ligeia fluttered his wings as he thought, what else could been seen as a magic tool. An idea came to mind but he wondered on it... so he figured that there was no harm in asking, "Would a magic circle be considered a tool?" It wasn't actually something you could move around or carrying it with you though, it was something you just drew on the ground, walls, or ceiling... still it was used in many spells so it might fall under the same catergory as the other things before mentioned.

At least this time she didn't have to press students for answers. Even giving a wrong one was better than not having the courage to try at all. Finally Raven raised her hands, palms out, in a "slow down" gesture. When the class was quiet again, she started dissecting each answer.
"Wands are the most well-known of the tools you will use. However, there is more to the art of wandwork than waving around a stick. Initially, you will choose a wand suited to you, one for beginners preferably. There will be a class in spellwork with wands, to teach you the basic principles. Like any tool, one must use a wand carefully. It is essential in many spells."
Wands were a perfect example, if another textbook one. Speaking of textbooks... "Tomes are useful, and definitely tools. However, they are not tools in the context that I am referring to. While I might not have made it clear, I am asking for active tools first. Active tools are ones you use in a spell, usually physically- wands, for instance. Tomes are passive; you can use them for information, but they are rarely directly involved in casting spells."
The next girl, the cheetah, offered a wealth of informed answers. "Yes, athames and chalices are both active tools. Athames, for those of you not familiar with the word, are ritual blades- usually knives or daggers with black, carved handles, but this can vary- used for symbolically cutting and casting magic circles. They are never used to cut physically- a smaller, white-handled knife is often used for this purposes. Chalices- and cauldrons," she added mildly, looking at Earako, "are used for holding things, often liquids or potions. Cauldrons are more often used for mixing and concocting, whereas chalices are generally for containment only. These two tools are connected beyond purpose. Can anyone tell me how?"
Raven did not reply to Ligeia's second response, but did look at him briefly. She would get to it in due course.
