Hadassah sighed in a happy bird twitter. The river had sweet smells- and the child of this Banya bird's wagon had grown into the light. Good days were coming. It opened its lips to sing a fortune that suddenly coursed through it- a wayward strand of meij.

Money changes hands. The port upcometh. It would be wise to have twenty and one-hundred pieces of gold....

Lorelei hurried up to the door of the wagon, then knelt to place a note, weighted with a stone, on the step. She knocked, considering waiting to talk to the inhabitant of the wagon. In the end, though, she hurried away again before the door opened, going to the next wagon.

I would very much like to meet you - I know that I have been very reticent and have isolated myself. I want that to end. Please, take this gift as a token of my good will... and come visit some time.

Anezka was laying on the bed in the back of Varekai, not sleeping but just sort of laying there in a daze. Leshya'e paused as she was sweeping out the wagon and looked at her daughter, "Ani?...Daydreaming?" Anezka rolled over and looked at Leshya'e, shaking her head, "No...just laying down..." Shy nodded and continued cleaning. After a while she became worried about her daughters lazy mood, thinking something might be wrong. "Do you feel alright?" She sat down next to her and placed her hand on her cheek. "Oh, gods, you feel like you're burning..." She scooped the child into her arms and exited the wagon. Noticing that the door of Blessed Change was open, she headed there, hoping Oqaia could be of some assistance.

Oq was sitting just inside Blessed Change, looking at a cats-eye marble her sister had given her recently, and hoping it was just what it seemed to be- regular glass, and not some mystical magical bauble. ...She'd had enough of the 'high and mystical' for quite a long while.

She saw Lesh running towards her before the woman ever called out to her. The girl leapt to her feet and met them hurriedly at the bottom step.

"What's wrong? What's wrong with Anezka?"

"She's warm...very warm...and she's not behaving like herself." Anezka sighed and leaned against Leshya'e limply, "I feel cold and shivery...my head is...floaty..." Leshya'e looked at Anezka, then up at Oqaia, "I can't understand what it could be..."

"Here, bring her inside. ...Has she eaten anything today? Gone into the river? Anything like that?"

"No, she's been in bed all day...I offered her some food, but she didn't take it." Leshya'e brought Anezka up the steps and into Blessed Change, "I hope it's nothing too bad..."

"Honestly, I don't know..." Oq said, looking over the feverish girl. "I've never done more than rudimentary healing before. But there is someone I know you can ask. Marissa. She has all sorts of plant lore- I'm sure she can help you." Oq's face was pained. ..."I'm sorry I couldn't help more. I'd fetch my sister for you- but I don't know where she disappeared to."

Leshya'e nodded and sighed, craddling her daughter, "Thank you, Oqaia...I'll go find Marissa...I'm sure she'll be able to help, I hope..." She sighed and stood up, leaving the wagon.

"Coming..!" Marissa opened the door, bring as quiet as she could so not to wake Kale from his nap. She found herself face-to-face with Leshya'e. "Ah, hello Shy...you look troubled. What's the matter, darling?"

"Marissa, I'm hoping desperately that you can assist me...Anezka seems to have taken ill." She bit her lip and shifted Ani up as she slipped down her hip. "She has a fever and Oqaia can't seem to find why...and Val is away...Can you help me?"

"Marissa, I'm hoping desperately that you can assist me...Anezka seems to have taken ill." She bit her lip and shifted Ani up as she slipped down her hip. "She has a fever and Oqaia can't seem to find why...and Val is away...Can you help me?"

As soon as Marissa heard the word 'ill' she was back into her wagon, searching for plants that could quell fever. She found foxglove in her travelling chest, dilaweed in the cupboards, and grabbed all ten jars of various crushed herbs, which she kept under the bed for emergencies.

"I've got everything I know of," Marissa said, her forhead creased in worry. "Kale won't mind if I leave him for a bit. Shall we go back to Oqaia's wagon so I can work?"

Leshya'e sighed with some relief and nodded, "yes, where ever is best..." She groaned, Anezka growing heavy against her, "Ani, dear, can you walk a bit on your own?" With a slight nod from her daughter, Leshya'e placed Anezka down on the ground, but held her close as they followed Marissa.

Marissa hurried to Oq's wagon and entered without knocking; she knew she was expected.

"Oqaia, hello, I've brought everything I have. I know you're somewhat versed in these things, as well, I thought I might check with you before I start anything remedial." Marissa paused, arranging select jars and pots and arranging them out on a table. "Since it's fever, I was thinking foxglove tea to calm her temerature, and then podding some card thistles and boiling the Fullonum's Heart." She stopped, reminding herself to speak in layman's terms.

"Er, the feathery bit on the inside, it's keeps a nice syrup."

Leshya'e followed Marissa and found a place in Oqaia's wagon to lay Anezka down. She sat down and held her daughters hand, looking at Oqaia and Marissa, remaining silent since she knew very little of remedies and potions.

Oqaia blinked in surprise, and was tempted to nod and say 'of course'... but this was no time for trying to fit perfectly into this machine. "I'm sorry, Marissa, I really don't know anything about herbology. You could be giving her grass and I'd trust you. Please, whatever you need to do. ...Do you need any supplies from me? I have pots and a mortar and pestle... supplies, if not the herbs themselves."

Without turning, she reached out and gave Lesh a comforting squeeze on the arm. The wagon was small, and she knew the woman would be standing right there, hovering protectively over her daughter.

Leshya'e returned the squeeze from Oqaia, then looked at Marissa, wondering if she would be able to fix Anezka. Anezka laid on her side and shivered ever so slightly, "Mumma...I'm feeling...so cold." Shy grabbed a blanket and pulled it over Anezka, tucking her in tightly.

Marissa nodded. "I understand," she said, "And pots would be helpful, thank you." She took the needed supplies and began to work. "Shy, will you set water boiling?" she asked gently; she figured the mother would take comfort in busying herself. Taking the blunt end of a cooking blade, she beat the foxglove pods in a clay bowl until they had powdered completely. Turning to where Leshya'e was working, she dumped the powder in. "Wait until it turns a sort of cloudy pink color, and then let me know," she instructed. Taking a handful of card thistle, she laid them in a line on the table.

Marissa faced a predicament: Time versus caution. She knew if she waited much longer Anzeka's condition would escelate, but she also knew that if she did this wrong that her treatment would be of no use at all. Sweating a bit, she began to slice down the seam of the plant pod. Its sides were prickly and hard to handle. When the pod was finally split down the center, she held it over another pot.

In one swift movement, Marissa seperated the severed halves, where a slippery brown liquid dripped out. She then flew to the water pump and wet a rag, which she draped over the pot before ten seconds had passed. That was good. If card thistle syrup was left dry for more than half a minute, it would dry and loose all of its usefullness.

She repeated this process over and over, waiting for word from Shy as to when the tea finished.

Leshya'e watched the water intently, then grabbed Marissa's arm gently. "It's ready, what shall I do next?" She stepped back away from the pot to give Marissa more space to move around and do what she needed to with the herbs and other medicinal plants.
She moved back to sit next to Anezka, holding her hand and brushing her hair from her face. "You'll be better soon, dear...Marissa will take good care of you..."

Marissa nodded; perfect timing. She had just finished collecting the juice from the final thistle pod. Picking up the pot and swirling it around a few times so to even the consistency of the mixture, she carried it over to Leshya'e. "Please stir it while I pour," she instructed gently. Tipping the pot so that the liquid within it slid into the tea, she watched as her concoction turned steadily from pink to muddy brown. She thanked Leshya'e quietly and put the stove fire out.

Marissa surveyed the liquid, which had just begun to boil and was now calming. She knew is wasn't a pleasant medicine to take, and stuck her hands in her pockets in contemplation. Her fingers brushed something, and she smiled the tiniest bit. Bringing forth a sugarcube from her skirts, she dropped it into the tea. It fizzed and dissolved. It wouldn't help much, but it would do.

She transfered the mixture into a large mug she found in Oqaia's cabinets. "Give this to her," she told Leshya'e. In whisper-tones she added, "She won't want to take it- it's vile stuff. But it should help wonders- just make sure she drinks it all." She handed the cup to Shy.

Leshya'e nodded and helped Anezka sit up. She wrapped an arm around Anezka and brought the mug to her lips. "Drink it down, dear one...It will make you better..." Anezka shook her head as she took a sip, sticking her tongue out and wincing. After a bit more encouragement, Anezka downed the rest of the mug. She groaned and grumbled, squeezing her eyes shut and sticking out her tongue.

Leshya'e turned and handed the mug back to Marissa, "Thank you, dear...Thank you so much. If there's anything I can do for you, don't hesitate to come to me." She smiled thankfully and hugged her daughter.

Marissa wiped her brow as she watched Anzeka obediently take her medicine. "Good job darling, it's icky but it should get you feeling better right away," she said with a smile. Pausing, the girl decided it was time to pack up her things. She put her jars and tools into her leather rucksack and heaved it over her shoulder.

"The fever should start going down in a few minutes...she might feel cold for a bit but that's just the ill running its course." She smiled to the wagon's inhabitants. "I'm glad I could be of assistance," she said, turning to leave.

"If I'm needed, you know where to find me. I should go wake Kale from his nap."

"Thank you..." Leshya'e smiled thankfully and lifted Anezka into her arms. Anezka was feeling a bit drowsy still, so Leshya'e left Oqaia's wagon and returned to Varekai. She laid Ani down on the bed and tucked her in tightly under a few warm blankets, then went to get herself something to eat.

The water was so cool and clear that the animals that moved the caravan eyed it with longing eyes. They'd stopped only hours before- and these mules, horses and oxen were far from abused- on the contrary, they were as part of this gypsy family. When the caravan had stopped, the gypsies had rubbed down their beloved animals with cool cloths, and untethered them from their wagons so they could lap from the sweet waters of the Pythos, or chew at the clover that sprang up on the water's edge. So the longing in the animals eyes was simply memory of that sweet water. But they plodded on- so intent were their owners to reach the mountains while the weather was warm.

It was said the waters were sweet because of the denizens that lived there- the Filor, the blue-gilled mer-swifts. The tales wouldn't be too untrue, either- for whenever a Filor came to the surface, any land-dweller close enough would be sure to remark on the honeyed, heady smell that came from their shell-pink and translucent blue scales. This sweet enzyme they secreted had often been mimicked by the land-dwellers in the form of perfumes or bridal bouquets... but not even the sweetest fascimile could come close to the heavenly odor of the Filor.

Twinket burst from the water. She had been watching this particular caravan for a day, following them down the gentle stream of the Pythos. She had stayed in the confines of the water as they travelled west, hoping that they would stay close to the river long enough for her to come to her trading spot- that place near the water where she had her goods stored. (For it wouldn't do her much good to keep her goods underwater, where they may be ruined.) It was this Filor's good fortune, however, that these gypsies travelled all the way to Rock High Point with her. As soon as she cleared the clear blue water, her small papery lungs inflated with a suck of air. They were small, and had been unused for several weeks, so she needed several more breaths before they worked properly and took over for her gills. Even when she did, however, her voice was gentle and small- so much more dainty than the singing trill she used beneath the waves.

"Fine gypsies," Twinket said, seeing that the caravan had stopped at the sight of her. "Do you have time for some trading with a Filor? I may have some wares of interest, friends." With that, removed several rocks from a shallow pit she'd dug so many moons ago, and pulled forth a waterskin bag, which she opened on the shore after she pulled herself up onto the rocks.

Leshya'e pulled her wagon to a stop and Anezka jumped down, heading towards Twinket with severe fascination. "Oh my! Mum, come look...see what she has...look at this...and this...oh, and these..." Leshya'e reached back and grabbed her leather pouch of couplets and followed Anezka who had picked up both the bottle of perfume and queen firos pendant. "Ah, I see you know what you like right away...how much for these?" Leshya'e smiled at Twinket as she looked at the items herself to find if there was anything she fancied.

Twinket gave Leshya'e and her daughter the price for the objects she was interested in. She also gave the girl a knowing smile, recognizing the spectral energy proto-wings that hovered- half in the meij, and half in this world.

"One day, you will seek the TriRune?" She asked conversationally while the women made up their minds.

Leshya'e nodded and smiled, agreeing with no difficulty or haggling to the prices of the pendant and perfume, looking into her pouch and beginning to count out her gold. Anezka looked at Twinket and tilted her head to the side, "Seek the TriRune? What is that?...Should I seek him...her...it?" She looked back at her mother, who was too busy admiring the other items to pay any mind to Anezka's conversation with the mer-woman.

The Filor girl beamed a smile at the two women, nodding at Ely first.

"I've always been fond of the doll, too. If I wasn't afraid of it being damaged in the water, I would have kept it!" Then she turned to Leshya'e as well, including her in her next question. "So will you be deciding on those items, then?"

While they decided, she lowered her already soft voice and put her pink and blue hand out to Anezka.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know you didn't know! ...Were your wings curse-given? If so, I'm very sorry to bring it up. The TriRune doesn't allow curse-givens to fly. But otherwise, if you can complete a TriRune, you can..." she looked at the women, surprised the magical girl hadn't been told, "well... you learn to fly!"

Anezka's eyes went wide, "Fly? Fly!? Mum, did you hear that?...Did you hear what she said?" Leshya'e turned and looked at Anezka, nodding in disbelief, "I...I had no idea...I..." She looked at Twinket, "How can she do that? How would she go about doing...whatever it is that you speak of?"

Twinket took the gold from Lorelei, feeling the clink of the couplets in her scaly palm, and smiling at the woman with the beautiful purple bird on her shoulder. She wanted to ask more about the fluttering creature, but the other child- she was obviously a Fortunette- had such a pressing question.

"Why, the Icarus Protectorate was the guild of fliers. Didn't you know? Many years ago, anyone who followed their teachings could fly. But then something happened to the Protectorate, and all that's left are their TriRunes- so called because they are scattered throughout the world in three parts each. These days as well, without the teachings or the Protectorate, even the runes can't do it all- those people with no air element, or no spirit of flying in their bones- they can't fly even with a rune. But you have the proto-wings. You would be able to fly with a full rune."

"Do you have one of the runes? Or know where I could find one? I'd so love you fly..." Anezka fidgeted in place and then spotted the TriRune amongst the other items twinket had, "Wait...is this it?" She tilted her head, then looked at it closer. "This must be it...I have a...feeling. How much is it?"

"That's the left corner," Twinket explained, showing the tip of the wing design that was etched into the ancient, grey rune. It was so small- it would fit in the girl's palm. "And it's 120 couplets. ...I found this one under Dark Bane Island. I've only ever seen one of the other corners. With another trader, long ago," she said, almost apologetically. She felt badly that this girl was likely to embark on a difficult quest. Her passion seemed to draw her to it, however- so there would be no stopping her with obstacles.

Leshya'e felt her heart sink, "Would you mind...taking a bit less. You see, I only have about 100 couplets on me to last me for a bit longer." She bit her lip, not having haggled in quite a long while, "My daughter, I know, would take great care of it...and it already means so much to her to be able to use her wings. Would you take, maybe...70 couplets for it?" Leshya'e crossed her fingers as she started low, hoping that she and the girl could maybe find a common price at around 85.

"70?" Twinket realized that this was a haggling price, and so she was not offended at the number, "That is awfully low for a TriRune. I've never, ever heard of one going for so little. I could perhaps let it free for 100 couplets?"

At Twinket's mention of the price and Lesh's response, Lorelei reached for her own purse - she could supply the last twenty couplets, and would do so gladly! She was opening her mouth to speak when Lesh began to haggle... and so said nothing, lowering her eyes.

Vanna sang softly, trying to cheer her mother up. A good deed in thought could be just as valid as one actually performed.

Anezka frowned at her mother and at Twinket. "100 is all I have...perhaps...80?...I can't risk myself being without gold during our travels. I wish I had something I could trade to make up the difference, but I fear that I have nothing that would be of any use to you." Leshya'e nervously rubbed the back of her neck, then put her hand on Anezka's back.

"I understand how difficult it is to be without gold when you're a traveller. ...Eighty is still very low, but..." she looked into the eyes of the expectant, beautiful rabbit-girl. "But I see how much she desires this. ...90, and it's yours."

Leshya'e sighed and nodded, "Thank you...Thank you so much..." She handed the couplets to Twinket and bowed to her, "Bless you, dear." Anezka face brightened up and she squeezed her fist around the rune, then held it to her heart, "I'll fly some day...I will...and when I do, I'll come back to find you, i promise!"

Twinket beamed, and oustretched her arms to the girl. "Oh... may I?" She beseeched the girl's mother, asking her with a gesture if she could hug the young one.

Leshay'e nodded and with the approval Anezka reached her arms out as well, embracing the lovely creature. "Thank you...Thank you so much...I'll never forget you..."

Twinket's gills whispered in the breeze. They were further back along her neck, and down close to her shoulders, made up of a webwork of coral pink slivers of dainty, frilly material that looked not unlike lace. That they moved now, while she was out of water, was a sign of affection.

"And I you, little one. I'm glad you've started your quest. If I ever find more runes, I will save them for you, and try to contact your caravan. I have friends who have already made it to the sky- who would be happy to help a fellow Protectorare."

Lorelei smiled and stood. Vanna flew over to Anezka and Twinket, chirping and singing and swooping and dancing through the air. Something in her movements gave off the impression that she was saying, 'One day, we can fly together!' along with a laugh and a smile.

Anezka smiled and finally pulled away, looking at her teary eyed mother. She turned and smiled back at the lovely Filor girl, then stood and walked back to Varekai with Leshay'e.

When they reached their wagon, Anezka took an old sash of Shy's and wrapped it around her waist. Deciding that it looked good, she took it back off and began to cut a square piece from another fabric. Leshya'e then used the square to make a pocket for the rune, but sewed it tightly shut on all four edges. "I'll never lose it...ever..." Anezka wrapped the sash around her waist and nodded.

The morning began like any other morning with Leshya'e waking and washing herself. Filling a pitcher with water, she headed back to Varekai to wake Anezka and get her cleaned and dressed for the day. Instead of finding her daughter laying in her bed, she found her sitting on the steps of the wagon looking down into her hands. "What've you got there, Ani?" Leshya'e tilted her head, then walked closer and looked into Anezka's hands. In the childs hands was a brightly colored, odd-looking egg. "Oh...my...where did you find that?" Anezka gestured to the inside of Varekai, but remained silent as she stared at her new most precious possesion.
Leshya'e cocked her eyebrow and then shrugged, walking into the wagon and pouring the pitcher of water into a basin. "Well, let's find a place to put it, then get you all washed up." Anezka nodded and handed the egg off to Leshya'e as she re-entered Varekai, "Actually, can I go clean up in the stream instead?" With a nod from her mother, Anezka headed to the nearby stream. Skipping there, she nearly stepped on a second ornate egg. "Whoa...hey now...whoa there..." Anezka's eyes went wide and she picked it up. After a few minutes she snapped out of her trance and ran back to her mother to show her the second egg and add it to her collection.

The day was quite chilly when she awoke, so Anezka pulled on some wool tights before she went out to brush Alexander's mane. Wrapping her shawl around her shoulders, she pulled a stool up to the horse and began to comb through some knots. Alexander was happy to have company, neighing quietly and pawing at the dirt with his hoof. "Hopefully the day will warm up, Alex...I was hoping to maybe collect some fruits for Mum." Alexander nodded his headed and pawed more at the dirt, as if agreeing with Anezka's statement.
Finally combing his tail and mane free of knots, Anezka continued to brush him off. Alexander's eyes wandered around and took in his surroundings. In a blur of brown and beige, a small chipmunk ran by, spooking him and sending Ani flying off her stool and onto the ground. She managed to calm him down, then limped around to the front of the wagon. "Umm...Mum...Can you mend something for me?" She asked, looking down with a frown at a tear in both her skirt and her tights.
"Oh dear, you're not bleeding are you?" Leshya'e frowned and then nodded, "Well, fortunately I was already doing some mending and darning, so just take those things off and add them to the pile." Anezka nodded and went into the back of the wagon to change her clothing, "Are you using those new threads and needles?" A nod was the only response from the gypsy, since she was holding a needle in her lips. Placing her tights and skirt on the pile and then examining her knee, Anezka then watched what her mother was doing.
"So...how do you do that without pricking yourself?" Anezka chimed up. Leshya'e smiled and gave her daughter a one word answer, "Practice." She glanced at the pile of items that needed to be mended and chewed on her lip, then had a brilliant idea, "Would you care to learn how to sew?" Deciding that it was too chilly to do anything outside, Anezka nodded and moved closer to Leshya'e and prepared to be instructed.
She pulled two tunics from the pile, laying one on her lap and one on Anezka's. "Ok...this is the most difficult part, once you get past this, you'll be able to do near any type of sewing." Raising a needle a piece of thread, Shy proceeded to demonstrate how to thread a needle. Lucky enough for Anezka, her fingertips were rough like the pads of her feet were when she was a small rabbit, so she didn't bleed much when she pricked herself. Finally mastering it, the lesson continued on as Shy taught Ani a simple stitch, "Good job...yes...that's it...see, it's quite simple isn't it?"
"Yes...You're right...once you can get past threading it, it's not so hard...well...unless it's a bad hole like that one in my tights." Anezka frowned, "Sorry 'bout that one, I fell off the stool when I was brushing Alex." Leshya'e nodded, "It's alright...as long as you're all good, it's fine, and I can fix the tights. But now that you know how to sew, you can help me fix small things like ripped seams." Anezka smiled and nodded, lowering her head back down, continuing to diligently repair the tunic.

Pani bristled at the cold. Up so high in the mountains- he wasn't used to the chill winds. In protest, he fluttered his wings and sang.

Lest you let the drops evaporate?
Have you no use for gifts?
Love- understanding...
How different could they be?

Hadassah, quite contrarily- loved the chill winds, and sang in happiness, catching a stream of the meij as it darted by the wagon.

Sweet sugars.
Sweet sugars make a child...
Not so sweet.

Veshengo dismounted from Skellick and then buttoned his jacket up a breeze blew by. He grumbled a bit and grabbed his satchel, then a larger sack, leading his horse over to where the other horse and oxen had been left. Glad to finally be able to sleep on a bed again, he began to relax, until his banya decided to speak up.
Normally Veshengo would have been delighted at hearing whatever the bird had to say, but he was annoyed and slightly embarresed at what Pani said. he grimmiced and looked around to check that the others had not heard. I can't...not yet...I just can't use it on her...not yet...she doesn't even know who I am.

She approached the table, smiling giddily at the wares. She was glad Kale was napping in the wagon, so he didn't have to see his mother acting so folly. A female in every respect, Marissa was partial to beautiful trinkets. She fawned over the merchandise.

Two pieces of gold caught her eye. The necklace, a delicate beauty with a rose attached, entranced her for it's craftsmanship and lovliness. The gold ring was nice as well, and it's price tag intrigued her. She picked up both items and turned to the burly man behind the table.

"Sir, could you tell a lady about these?"

Veshengo walked casually up to the stall, standing a few feet from Marissa, but remaining inconspicuous. He spotted what she was looking at and reached into his pocket, counting his couplets and preparing himself to step forward and pay for the lovely necklace if she indeed decided she wanted it.

Lof ignored the male gypsy, turning instead to the woman who peered at the sandals.

"The pendant was made by my mother. It's made from a very fine gold that's found deep within the mountains." He did not tell her that female Gelm can withstand the deeper depths- it was one of those unsaid, almost embarassing things for male Gelm, that their women were stockier and more suited to their work than they. "And the ring... it's Darkheart Gold. This one isn't very old- see, only a few spots have shown through with the black... as time goes on, and it's exposed to more dark magic, it will get darker. ...It absorbs black magic, protects. But I can't sell it for couplets. I'd be cursed."

The word protection rang in Marissa's mind. She thought of her son, so peacefully asleep back in the wagon. Yet...she could think of nothing to trade with the man. Painedly, she asked, "And what, exactly, would you be willing to trade it for?" She bit her lip, racking her mind for anything of worth that she owned. There wasn't much.

And still, she marveled at the rose neckalce. "It's beautiful," she muttered. "Perhaps...if my purse was heavier," she sighed apologetically.

Veshengo smiled and stepped forward, glad to have the chance to do something kind for the lovely gypsy he had become so infatuated with. "That's a lovely necklace...not as lovely as you, Miss, if I may be so bold to say so" He bowed his head to her, then reached into his pouch and counted out the gold. Handing the couplets to Lofbross, he took the necklace and stepped behind Marissa to latch it to her neck. It took all his self-control to not lean in and smell her neck or give her a kiss, but he managed to behave like a gentleman.

Lof took the couplets, ignoring the display.

Marissa was startled out of her contemplation by the feel of a warm hand at her neck. She had hardly paid attention to the quick bargain made by Loftbross and the man who now busied himself with fastening a beautiful piece of jewlery behind her head, but she started. "Wha..?" she began, and spun to meet her benefactor. Met with the dark eyes of a man she had seen once, maybe twice, about the caravan, and never spoken to, she was taken aback. "Sir...you can't be serious...I can't possibly..." but she was powerless to the gaze in which he held her. Only her dear firend's sacrifice jolted her out of her dumb astonishment.

Veshengo smiled, "It's no problem, Miss...You deserve it...and it looks lovely on you..." He bowed his head to her and then took her hand, giving it a polite kiss. With the interjection of another gypsy that took Marissa's attention, Veshengo dropped her hand and quickly made his exit, almost disappearing in a split second like an apparition.

Finding himself alone, he leaned against a tree and sighed, closing his eyes and replaying the previous moments with Marissa in his head. "She's so beautiful...so lovely..." He sighed heavily, then headed back to his horse.

Hadassah caught the fortune-bringing wind- like every other Banya did that day. It was a powerful, prophecy- bringing wind that carried upon it the meij. Hadassah- like all Banyas, could catch these fortunes and bring them to words- making them as understandable as possible from their nebulous, natural wordless state.

Pani caught the same breeze, and though it was cold, the message it brought pleased him.

This firy love
Oh loves she fire.
But what she loves
Where fire consumes wood-
So wood
Consumes this Fire.

Hadassah was as every other Banya that day, clasping onto the wind and feeling the power of the meij speaking to what was to come. The bird luckily had not so much of the ill-temper as its counterparts- and today it was almost cheery with the strange combination of weather outside.

You have a key
To one of your wings
The other waits at the shore
But caution, one wing comes
Fairly sweetly

Pani was glad for the warmer breeze, and he ruffled his feathers.

The daughter
Shall she be yours as well?

Caution...I hate that word, Loathe it! Just like Beware...nothing good ever happens when words like that are used. Oh why did you have to say that Haddie!?

They were on the water: a sour place for a fire banya to be. And so, like the other Fires in the caravan, Pani took his anger out on his people- shoving at them the harshest kernel he could find in the fine meij wind that blew over the waves.

You lost a chance at a daughter
Now- you repent for that, and must find another way
Fate has given you that slot
And now you must fill it
Or fill a grave, instead.

What!?...

Veshengo paced back and forth near Pani, eyes closed as he tried to focus on something else. Part of him knew what the bird meant, but part of him was confused, so much so that he was in pain. Slumping down against a wall, he grabbed his head, "Why can't you just say it!? Just tell me what I should do!"

Something...Something is not right. It's like time has stopped...like there's been a rip in the vortex or the time-space continuum. Or perhaps these books I've been reading have caused be to be paranoid...but...What if something is happening? To Me, To Mum, To the Caravan...Do they know? Are they scared too?...Or am I alone?

I was certainly not made for the open sea. The trip on the ferry was harder then I thought, and it seemed forever until I could find my footing and calm my stomach. We've reached Neried Isle now, but after that trip and seeing the sort of people here, I wonder why we didn't just stay on the other side. Valelldia must have a reason, and who am I to question her?
