Flutes are definetly one of the hardest. Slides seem very impossible to do. But the brass intruments don't have it easy either. That would be a pain to carry since brass instruments have those large bells.

Elanchana I wouldn't know the hardest, but I do know that flutes are very hard to march with, even though they're not heavy and cumbersome. You have to keep a flute perpendicular to the ground in playing position, which kills your arm if it's done too long, and it's the only instrument that's held sideways, meaning that a right slide is extra hard. Very true. That answer is a tough one. I think each instrument is hard to march with in it's own way. So, because of the differences it's hard to saw which is hardest. Although, flutes are a pain because it's is really noticeable when something is wrong and it is a little awkward and hard, espacially for the freshmen.

Oboe. D: Especially with trying to keep the reed wet and if it's cold or hot, you're screwed. And the sousaphone, I had to hold one for someone and I was curious so I put it on and marched with it, my back hurt so much after having that. D:

I agree all instraments are hard in there own way. I still wouldn't want to march tuba. My old bd and class wanted me to march bass clarinet. I told them hell no try keeping it stright and I have a weak neck so yeah. Our tuba I felt so bad for him he had to march backwards a long ways fast he nearly fell over a few times but he never ran me over.

dude . . . contra bass hands down. 45 pound instrument that sits on your shoulder for 11 minutes and you have to blow as much air into that thing if not more than a flute or oboe. There is your hardest instrument right there.

ok... i could have some fun with this
-piano -contrabass flute -flute (hard to think of keeping flute parallel, remember your show, memorizing song- its very tiresome) I PLAY FLUTE! -french horn (hard to march with those. many school don't march with them) -mellophone (the bell covers the person in front of you- YOU CANT SEE A THING!) -cymbals... hard to keep it up.

It's hard to say. Probably the easiest instruments to march around with are Alto Sax and Trumpet. Everything else has something that makes life difficult.

three words: trombone;slide;b***h. trombone is quite possibly one of the most annoying instr. to move w/. It's hard to reach something like 5th or 6th while turning. The worst part is avoiding hitting people when they get too close.

no one can say that a tuba is hard to carry around....we have a freshman in our band and he is at least 5'6'' or 5'7'' and we have the big tubas that rest around your shoulders and even though he needs a back brace he can run with that sucker and the only time he takes it off is if we have a water break or our director takes a break from the wind line...our other tuba player is a big guy and he takes it off every chance he gets....of course he is just lazy...

Flute is hard to march when you're doing slides. D: I can keep it parralell to the ground, but then my chest isn't facing front. If I face front, my flute droops.
I think quints would be hard to march. ._. Its heavy and they gotta stand up straight... Someone asked me to carry it to the field for them. I'm very small and weak... I think I ended up kicking it and falling backwards just to move it a little bit.

Pretty Needle The bands that literally have shoulder-propped tubas. My band has sousaphones, but I've seen tubas that rest on shoulders.. Ow.
In my band, though, I'd have to say the baritone. It's the biggest instrument held upright, like a trumpet. :3 I'm one of those shoulder propped tubas and it sucks, and its harder to play. dramallama

I play trombone, and no other instrument has to march with two feet of brass sticking out in front of them.
It's especially bad in our band where 160 bpm is considered to be a 'slow' tempo.

i would have to say the contra even though i dont play it. i play sousiphone and its pretty bad especially when you go through nine hours of band camp with that thing on.... our sousaphones are copper with silver plating so yeah thy are heavier than normal. its also very difficult to do slides and visuals where you are supposed to move it around with the same speed as the other instruments... baritone sounds pretty hard. and for the woodwinds. you might have awkward positions but we do them to with a lot more weight
