Gaius paused in his steps at the question of kids, his face full of honest surprise, then broke into a laugh and continued walking. "No, no kids! Still haven't found 'the right one' to settle down with... Which I kinda regret now, but what can you do... Nah, it's just my dad, who raised me, and my step-mom and sis. They're all back on the west coast. Probably don't even know what's happened to me..." He rubbed the side of his neck and gave a forced chuckle. It was a hard subject, but Gaius wasn't in the mood to give in to moping. Instead, he picked up on her change of subject.

"Hmmm, New York? I've been there once, but only for like a week. The place is huge! Seems the perfect place for you... er!" His thoughts stumbled, wishing for a way to rewind, but instead hurredly tried to cover, hoping she wouldn't take it the wrong way. "Not that I mean your clothes or anything, just, uh, New York fits? I mean, you seem to have pretty sharp wits and can adapt," he explained, an embarassed, self-conscious smile on his face as he looked at her from the corner of his eyes. "That's why I'd never want to try and live there myself... No sense, me."

Thankfully, the laundry room was close, and Gaius was relieved to hurry forward and opened the door for her with a gentlemanly nod of the head. "After you!"
