I believe that you're Jewish if you follow the religion. There are some Gentiles whom I would consider more Jewish than some Jews I know (they're Noachides and love HaShem and respect Him more than a non-observant or half-observant Jew) I don't think Judaism is passed through genetics much at all. It's more of a spiritual thing. Like in the Talmud (It could be in the Torah or the Kabbalah too but I'm pretty sure it's the Talmud) It says that converts to Judaism were born with a Jewish spirit. And I think that's the only thing that counts. The Jewish spirit. There's a reason Judaism and Israel are two seperate words now. Israel is the people, the race, and Judaism is the observance to HaShem.

Oh yeah if someone is drawing swastikas for any reason other than to teach someone about the Holocaust they're not Jewish and if they follow Christianity which is responsible for many Jews turning away from Judaism and killing thousands of them they're not Jewish.

famusamu Let it be known that I am not here to 'convert' anyone That runs quite contrary to what I remember of you, when you first came on the scene in here, back when we started this guild. famusamu Messianic Jews, such as myself keep Shabbat, have Erev Shabbat and Torah Services, recite the Shema and read from their own Siddur. They celebrate all the Feasts of the Tanach. Messianics have bar/bat mitzvahs and bris their sons. And hold that a blasphemer, Jesus of Nazareth, was God himself. Amitzah I used to get annoyed at people like that, until it was applied to me. I was on a Young Judea trip in Israel a few years back and one of the boys said I wasn't Jewish because my mom and dad weren't born Jewish. WTF. I was born Jewish. My mom went through the conversion process before my brother and I were even born. I was raised Jewish. I had my Bat-Mitzvah. I had my Confirmation. I go to synagogue when I'm able, but school gets in the way a lot. I think God will forgive. He didn't like that I was Reform, though, and so I just wasn't Jewish enough for him. =/ Not the first time I've read anecdote along those lines, for sure.

I get the same problem with Wiccans. *pulls face* They draw goats' heads inside pentagrams and think they're cool because they want to be emos or individualists or something. The sole reason I haven's bludgeoned them yet is that the most important law of Wicca is to harm none.
@Angsty Shem: Please don't call Jesus of Nazareth a blasphemer. He was a man who inspired billions of people today to live better lives. He gave hope to countless men and women. You may believe that he is not God - and I quite agree - but if such a man was not divinely inspired, I don't know who is.

I know people who aren't even half Jewish and just say they are because it's different. Correct me if I'm wrong.. but doesn't your mother have to be Jewish in order to be Jewish yourself? My Catholic boyfriend is more Jewish than most people who pretend to be Jewish at my school. It's sad really. But on the brightside: being Jewish is cool! But we all knew that, right? 3nodding

Leah_Schon Correct me if I'm wrong.. but doesn't your mother have to be Jewish in order to be Jewish yourself? To call oneself "a Jew," matrilinear, though some're more liberal on the mixed parentage debate nowadays (though by "some" I mean Reform, of course). And don't forget converts, of course. One with patrilinear heritage could call themselves "Jewish," and I wouldn't stone them, myself. Especially not if they were observant. Were they nonobservant and calling themselves "a Jew," I might say something, though.

I agree with that.
If someone's dad is Jewish and their mother is not, I would still think them Jewish if they practiced. 3nodding
