I don't see why people would want to kill off the parents. =|
I think its fun when you're role playing with a good character and you meet the parents.
Like... when you find out "Travis" is a pyrophobic because his mom's a terrible cook and burned the salad while making dinner.
____... -crickets- or something...
But yeah... o.o
Parents are fun to role play, you just gotta give 'em a chance!! Don't just kill 'em off because they bored you. D;
And maybe there should be an OOC board for topics like this? Oo

Er...why some creators would kill off the parents? Hm. Good question.
Curper Wrill: Yeah, I murdered my parents. So what? Bond Drellmire: You load of filth! I at least appreciated mine! I cannot bear to think I had admired you even slightly these past months! Curp: Well, hey, don't look at me, I'm not the one who chose to have a demon randomly bound into my soul. Blame her. *points at Edogawa* Ed: But I liked it. Bond: You cannot be my creator. Lumons Varagus: I'm a god, I haven't parents. Ed: Yeah, er, please don't mob me with your fearsome skills and powers. I know it's like the plague, but -- Seran Mocight: It is the plague! I got separated because of my mother because of you! *pitchfork* Ed: Yes, well... Curp: I'm gonna have soup tonight in a certain someone's skull! Ooh, yeah! Ed: You're talking about me, aren't you?
...Nope, nothing's coming to me. I just do it.

thanks for making this, I've now found myself guilty of stuff when making characters. I knew what I wanted them to be like I just never said it.

Magegirl.Nino I hope that somebody posts a "Guide to decent rping". We need one. o.o I think I have one somewhere... Or at least, I used to have one for sure. >_< -kicks little bro for deleting my folders-
Iono... people just need to learn some basics. Like some RP terms, creativity, different ways to start sentences, how to make posts people can actually respond too...

I have gladly only killed off both parents in my very early writings. I occasionally do it for emotional suspense. One of my common characters has only a widowed mother to take care of him. So he's emotionally disturbed because of her. It's hard to explain without actually writing a page-worth or so. I learned on my own not to make characters perfect while writing because I used to leave no room to improve the characters. So my character ended up the same as he did in the beginning. That's when I learned to create good characters. In my book, severely flawed yet open-minded is a good thing.

Wow, this is a really good guide. I think I was already doing most of your advice, but it heped me to see my character as a whole more, and that helped a lot. Thank you!

Very helpful, and well-written, guide! ^^ I'll use this when adding more things to my characters, for sure. <3
Also, I dislike the whole "my parents are dead" cliche. Wonderful character developing angst can come from sources besides that. For example, my character's parents are both alive and kicking, but he angsts over his own personal weaknesses. (He lacks physical strength and feels that he can't protect those he loves.) Find more creative ways for flaws; not everybody's parents are dead! XD Even in the disease-ridden, unsanitary medieval world of Fire Emblem, Eliwood's parents survived.
...His mother did, at least. >.> ninja

Nice guide.
D: Victoria's parents are dead, as she was raised in an abbey, but that was war.
As for Leon, since his parents are nobility, they're probably alive, but he ran away from home to join the army. O:
