Surprsingly, though, when I started playing FE9, I discovered that Ike is almost as good! eek So Ike earns the title of "pleasant surprise".
This puts Hector in 3rd place. *huggles Hector*
And finally........*death glare at Eliwood* No. I refuse to give HIM a ranking. Hmph! *turns away with arms crossed* (Sorry, everybody, I've only played 7 and 9...<.<;; wink

Characterwise, when it comes to best Lord I'd have to say Eirika. =|
She'd make all the guy lords fall in love with her and all the girl Lords want to be her best friend.
Then she'd do the same to the enemies. stare

You know, Eliwood isn't THAT bad. After he promotes he gets better.
But Lyn still pwns. ^_^
Soren bothers me for some reason. He's so sadistic or somehting. I'm having trouble figuring out why people like him so much. He sucks. Please tell me he gets stronger! He's pathetic right now. He does all of four damage at most. And is it usual for him to triple attack? o.O
And I dislike Eirika, she bothered me more than Soren does.

-Shot for loving Lord Lief more than usual- Annnywhoo Eirika and her love for her friend Lyon just pissed me off... it's like "HELLOOOOO Dunce bucket much?" Sheesh... she's worse than the blondest of blonds or something.
Well I can't say much about Soren other than he's got a pretty face. XD But I hear he gets really good... >.>; Man... I really need to get a Gamecube to complete my geekiness... >.<;

And now, in all seriousness.
Based on what I've played, I'd have to go with Ike.
Ike doesn't annoy the hell out me and he isn't in love with his sister so~ <3
He's a pretty good fighter, his sword never broke, Aether was lovely, he did good for the ONLY LORD IN THE GAME. [Elencia dun' count 'cuz her status is not Lord but Princess Crimea.]
The Lords of RnK were all good, it would be difficult to chose between them but they're at they're absolute best when they're together.
Eirika and Ephraim just... I despised them both more then I hated Marcus.

Oddly enough, Eliwood and Roy.
Seriously, despite having mehish stats and late promotions (Kinda for Eli), Eliwood seems to love me, and gets given all the best treatment from my RNG. o.O
As for his son, well, Roy must be a pimp with the amount of endings he can get. ._. Gotta love that.

Despite popular belief, Eliwood doesn't suck--He can handle himself very well. I explained it already in another topic so I won't repost everything here.
ACCURATE weapons, ie; Swords + Lances. Good movement. His personality isn't the best [[he's the carbon copy of every RPG hero ever made!!!!1one!]] but it's better then some of the characters from future games.
And like you said, if you're lucky, Eliwood's RNG will be blessed.

Eliwood shapes up for me around level eleven. He ends up hitting level 20 faster than most of my units and his SPD and SKILL are phenomial. He really seems to like me. ^_^ Him and Lyn both. Hector doesn't, he refuses to hit another character.
Eirika, even at level 20 she couldn't kill and enemy in two blows. Unlike Lyn who kills enemies at level 6 or so.

The difference between them is that Eliwood tends to be more cooperative.
Wait, what's this about Eirika grows a horsewith Ephraim? Do they merge into one unit all together??? o.O
Marth seems to have a personality similar to Eliwoods, only with out pants. And he has a Rapier too. ^_^
Roy likes Rapiers too, but then he gets that big hulking Sword of Seals.
