Freddie followed him outside, naturally. The mention of the word subject hit a nerve, and in an instant all his malicious cheer died as things were knocked back into perspective for him. He was a subject, he knew that... Just as he knew he was a sad, ugly little man to go chasing after people trying to pick fights. New wounds and old, all at once. Implying he had brain damage fell into the old and often heard category.

He didn't like being reminded of it, and he couldn't admit it, much less articulate it. Worse than that, his usual coarse bag of trick wasn't working. His one method of stress relief, and he got nothing.

Thus why he threw all his unspoken rules aside and jumped Gaius from behind.

Gaius was sent tumbling forward, landing with salad sandwiched between himself and the ground in a lovely wet mess. His temper instantly flared back up as self-defense kicked in. He would have lashed back, had it not been for the hefty man on his back. Lifting his head out of the dirt, he snarled, "You crazy! What is wrong with you?!"

He flailed an arm behind, trying to hit Freddie and get him off his compressed lungs, adding in an attempted kick for good measure. "b*****d, get off me!"

"Why won't you fight like a man, goddamit?"

This from the man who'd just jumped his opponent from behind. He did his best to try and keep Gaius pinned to the ground, but his tussles never quite went as smoothly, or as flawlessly, as his own stories about them always went. The kick caught him hard in the leg, and as he cried out his grip loosened.

This kind of situation would be turned around to have Freddie the attacked... but it wasn't like he had anyone he could brag to, even if he lied about everything. The very thought made Freddie grit his teeth and redouble his efforts.

The moment he felt Freddie's hold lessen, Gaius siezed the chance to get some leverage beneath him and push his assailant off. Freddie was still on top of him, but Gaius had enough room to be able to defend himself, for the most part. Or to hit him with a right hook, which he did with as much force as he could muster in close quarters, quickly followed by another kick.

"Get. OFF. Me!"

In the midst of the struggle, Gaius's right hook only clipped Freddie in the shoulder. He grunted with pain and then, reinforcing the crazy assumption, he grinned.

"Thaaat's more- OW, ******** kick caught him squarely in the leg. Less talking, more punching, he had to remember that. He curled his fingers into a fist and struck, aiming for the general area of Gaius' chest. It was hard to be picky when they were on the ground, but it was still a fight... not exactly a good one, but a fight.

The blow winded Gaius, knocking him for a loop before he could catch his breath again and retaliate. Why was he even here? He didn't want to fight! But now that it'd come to physical blows, rational thought seemed pretty useless. What was important was inflicting more pain than he received until he could find a way to get out.

Going with what worked, Gaius kicked again, harder, and swung again at Freddie's face. Ears flattened back angrily and he bared his teeth in a growl - as if that would do any good.

Freddie tried to dodge the kick, but a build like his did not make for cat like movement. The maniacal laugh that followed was cut short as he was hit in the face. His cheek was definitely going to swell, but he was too elated, not to mention hyped up on adrenaline, to care.

He giggled, even as he panted, and hauled himself up to his feet. "Yer not so hopeless... Still probably queer... but I mean in a fight... not so hopeless."

The instant Freddie was off him Gaius was scrambling to his feet, glaring at the guy and holding his fists up defensively.

"Friggen b*****d," he spat. His chest ached - no doubt it would bruise a pretty color. The damned guard-wannabe had a lot of brute strength, he had to give him that. No brains, though. "Just try that again, I'll put you out for good!"

"We'll see about that."

Freddie lunged at Gaius again. As he did every time, he put all that force behind his fist... It worked great against drunks and anyone else who didn't know enough to watch, not so much against anyone who knew the first thing about self defense.

Gaius automatically stepped back, sidestepping to avoid the punch as much as he could. The backward momentum lessened the force enough that the impact on his right shoulder only knocked him off balance momentarily. He regained his footing quickly.

Then, he retaliated with an under-hand gut-punch of his own, going for the soft spot in Freddie's considerable belly.

The gut punch knocked the air out of Freddie, and for a sickening moment, while he was struggling to get his breath back, it felt like his lunch was going to follow. Hard to keep the grin plastered on through that. He staggered back, put his hand to his belly, and for the first time since the fight began thought about how long it had been since he was in a good old fashioned fist fight. Not since he'd left the mainland, that was for damn sure, and scraps between other guards were always disappointingly brief.

As long as he'd been employeed by the labs, all he'd needed was to to look imposing, point his gun at things, and swagger whenever he was on patrol. Being out of practice when he wasn't that good to begin with was a terrible thing.

He couldn't let that stop him, though he probably should have thought to do something other than the same move as before with the other arm.

Gaius had miscalculated, jumping in with another swing when Freddie came at him with a mirrored repeat of the first attack. This one hit him full on to that wide jaw, knocking him right onto his tail. He winced and rubbed at the spot, feeling a bit of wetness from a split-lip.

He was back on his feet in an instant, adrenaline pumping. Gaius cursed himself for getting into this situation. Logic said to just walk away, but pride demanded that he finish what was started.

The remains of the dirty, slimey mess that'd once been his salad lay scattered around him, a few sticky leaves still glued to his stained shirt. Enough was enough, he wasn't about to spend all day nursing a black eye. He clenched his fists. Why did he always have to be the better man? What he wouldn't give to just forget principles for a day and let loose.

He spat blood and saliva and whiped a hand across his mouth, glaring at Freddie. "b*****d," he muttered, turning to walk away.

"p***y," Freddie retorted. But that time he didn't follow. He didn't really want to know exactly how long a fight could go before someone hit the magic button... but more than that he didn't want to know for certain whether he would come out on top. He'd taken more hits that he'd gotten in, but he got what he wanted. It was already hard to see out of his right eye. No telling how bad that had to look. He waited until Gaius was a few steps away before he spat a little blood of his own out on the ground.

He bristled, but continued stalking away, a storm of foul names ringing through his head that he'd love to shout then and there.

But no. He had to be the gentleman. As always. Stupid morals.
