As the bird looked up at the boy, it seemed to have been confirmed that he was right- the bird was indeed smarter than it looked, at least from the look in its yellowed eyes. And it certainly understood what a shush was.

But it didn't talk. It only watched. And thus, it lost all sorts of interest in the boy, simply continuing to observe the still empty situation below. It seemed somewhat frustrated that it could not hear anything from here, and since a bit of time had passed since the beginning of his watch, he glided towards the nearest bottom floor window in order to get a better view. That was, if there was one, and if it could fit on the windowsill.

The boy dropped down onto the awning with a thump, then clambered down the newly built structure till he was standing on the sand of the beach. He looked back only once, to mutter "weird bird" as the eagle decided to perch by one of the many bottom floor windows. The bird could certainly fit on the windowsill, particularly if the window was opened. And a few of them were, it being a relatively nice day on the beach.

Just as the bird had lost interest in the boy, Rand had lost interest in the bird. He ran off down the beach, intent on finding some driftwood and pretending he was surfing. Which, for Rand, involved actually attempting to surf.

And of course, it wisely found the first open window to perch at. The eagle simply sat there and observed, looking around for any sign of the one whom it was looking for... wait.

Just out of the corner of its eye, the eagle saw what appeared to be the young lady in question. The only thing it needed now was a clear view of her face...

The rather lazy-looking black cat immediately raised it's head when the eagle landed on the window sill, but other than perking it's ears in the bird's direction, really didn't seem to take too much notice. It circled around and went back to sleep, but it's head was now facing the open window, it's ears still picking up any sounds that may pass by.

Meanwhile, Rage continued his conversation with Owle. "Yeah... I understand...." He sent along with this the mental equivalent of a sweat drop. "Still, looks like opportunity is knocking."

A small, almost unseen bead of sweat rolled down the side of Rage's head. There was a short moment of silence before Rage got back to talking. "Well, almost anything works for me. We could always use another set of hands around here. Watts and his dwarfs do well and all, but sometimes you need somebody whose height doesn't top out at your waistline...."

There was a gruff "harumph" from a pair of horns behind the bar, followed by dwarfen cursing, if anyone could even understand what Watts said in the first place. A closer inspection would reveal that the horns were actually attached to a helmet, which was attached to a round-looking dwarf cleaning glasses. "As far as I'm concerned as long as you're not out to kill anyone... on my staff, anyways... it won't be a problem. Only catch is we can't pay you too much, outside of room and board. And food, of course. You get to keep your own tips though, if that's any consolation." He wasn't good at this whole interviewing thing he had heard about, particularly since he had never had a proper job in his life. He desperately hoped he wasn't scaring the girl off, and thus took an immediate interest in the resumè he had been given a moment ago.

It was about this time that he heard Owle. He had long since mastered the art of telepathically speaking with her (although he was not a telepath himself), so it wasn't a problem to respond with "I know. I'm as surprised as you are."
"Oh no.. that's just fine... I'm not out to kill anyone, just yet..." If that had been a joke, Sam obviously didn't get it sweatdrop
She managed to smile a bit more brightly. "I worked at a dinner in Barton for a few days... so I can serve no problem..." 3nodding She was looking more like a kid again, and still trying to pull off the older look. "When can I start?"

It paid no mind to the cat, though it saw the feline move out of the corner of its eye. Sure, if it moved, the bird would move, but for now- wait...

Ah, there she was. She had turned her head just in the right direction. The image of the girl in its head matched with the one that it saw here.

Exactly what it needed to hear. Satisfied, it immediately flew off towards the direction of Durem...

((Position marked. Scouting birds will be sent here every so often in order to keep tabs on the place, as well as Samantha. Don't worry- they're only scouts and won't do any harm.))

"Indeed!" A smiley face accompanied the thought. "Wonder what her story is, though, you've got to be pretty down on your luck to take a job offer like that one... sweatdrop It's not like we're even paying her much and she still wants to work for us. Well, I guess there'll be plenty of time to find out."

Owle, being pretty oblivious, and having her attention divided between mentally speaking to Rage and attending a customer, didn't notice the eagle. At all. In her mind it may as well have never been there at all.

((Duly noted. Owle might try poking at them telepathically if she actually notices, which being rather oblivious she probably won't. She's not going to harm random birds, but she might try talking to them.))

Cro let all the conversations roll over him as he ordered a short, no offence meant, glass of whiskey. He'd rather Samantha got herself sorted out first, from the initial look of her, even in the dim lighting, she needed something like this, and it wouldn't do any good calling untoward attention to himself and letting her sink into the background.

When the deal had been struck he looked calmly at Rage.

"I can cook, believe it or not...and...erm...whatever you were cooking before? Is there...anyone watching it?" As he spoke the nice even smell of something cooking quickly became a rather angry, smokey scent of something fast on it's way to becoming charcoal.

Within a few minutes Owle was placing the drink down in front of Cro. "There you go, sir. Let me know if you need anything else."

Then the man spoke, and Owle's widened as the smell of something burning finally registered in her mind. "Oh no!" And she ran back into the kitchen. She spared a helpless glance at the grill before rescuing her bread from the oven.
PostPosted: Fri Sep 29, 2006 10:38 am

There was an upset-looking dwarf standing next to the grill, simply leaning up against the base of it since he couldn't reach. As Owle walked in he nonchalantly said "food's burning" and walked out.

Rage rubbed the back of his head, an embarrassed look on his face. "Um... I guess not..." he said in response to Cro, right after Owle went running off. "I better go take care of that...." He hopped out of his seat, walking to the kitchen at a brisk pace and taking a look at the grill. "I think next time I cook I'll stay in the kitchen... I have to wonder if that guy - the one with the tail - out there's looking for a job. He said he can cook - between you, Watts, and myself, it's pretty hard for us to take care of everything around here."

Without a second thought he took a piece of chicken off the grill right after he turned the thing off. Despite the fact that flames had been licking at it seconds earlier, he didn't seem to notice that, at this point, it should have been burning his hand. He held it with two fingers, seeming to take a closer look at it. "Oh yeah. This is NOT salvageable. Ryu might want to eat it...." Sighing, he pulled out a plate and began heaping the scorched meat onto it.

"If he is I'll be glad of it; it's not like we have that many customers, but even now we can't keep from burning our own food if we get a couple people walking in the door."

She set the bread down on the stovetop, then peeled off the flowery oven mitts she'd been wearing. Unlike Rage, she wasn't fireproof; she just had a high tolerance for burns.

"I think the bread's okay...little charred on the outside, but I bet its still soft and chewy on the inside," she commented hopefully, then broke down into giggles at the image of Ryu, as a little black cat, devouring all that meat.

"Anyway, let's go back out and ask him. If he wants to help, well, the more the merrier."

And, after poking curiously at the bread ("Ouch! Hot..."), she headed back toward the common room.

Rage followed suit after Owle, bringing the burned meat out to the black cat, who immediately took interest. After Rage set it down to talk to Cro and Owle, the cat (Ryu, apparently) perked up and began to paw and bite at the meat. For something so small it sure had a healthy appetite.

((I'm going to put Rage on autopilot. Owle, you can control him if necessary so that my absence doesn't slow things down.))

((Don't worry, it's not like we're going amazingly fast.))

Owle watched Ryu in amusement for a while, half expecting his mouth to grow bigger than his head and just devour the meat in a single gulp. Then she turned to Cro and Sam. "Would either of you like some bread? It's a little, um, burnt...but I'm hoping it'll taste good once it cools off!"

The sweatdrop was almost visible.

Just outside the newly finished building, a short melody seemed to lilt from an invisible acoustic guitar...then with no regard for the laws of physics a man with a dingy acoustic guitar in his hands and an ornate guitar case on his back is suddenly standing in front of the Firebrand, looking at the sign proclaiming its name with interest. The stranger is clad in a red longcoat, underneath which an elegant white shirt and dressy black pants can be seen. As he replaces the guitar in its case, he takes a deep breath through his nose. Besides the fresh, clean smell of the surf (one thing the stranger loves), there is the odor of slightly carbonized bread in the air.

???: "Hmm...I've been looking for a pub to become a patron of."

The stranger ambles towards the entrance, his steps slightly forced, as though he was getting used to walking on land again. Before he enters, he taps the soles of his black leather boots against one of the poles supporting the awning, causing small showers of sand to cascade down from them. With little ceremony he opens the door and waltzes in, finding a seat at the bar and plopping into it. His overexaggerated movements almost cause him to fall right off the barstool, but somehow he manages to keep his balance.

???: "This is a nice place you have here."

He says this to no one in particular while he examines the interior of the Firebrand, as he knows the owner is somewhere within earshot. If they're busy with something else, ah well. He's got time to waste. He drums his fingers on the countertop, enjoying the atmosphere...

"Why thank you!" answered the blue-haired woman who had just been offering Cro and Sam some bread. Her light blue eyes turned toward the stranger, taking in his odd appearance. Of course, she really oughtn't to be calling other people odd, given the fact that ruddy brown scales covered her shoulders and feet, and tiny brown feathers seemed to be poking up out of the blue hair that covered her back. Were those...wings? Seemed to be so...this woman was winged, as well as scaled. Though for the most part she seemed human...ish.

"Is there anything I can get you, sir?" she asked helpfully.

((This is sometime after she hears Sam and Cro's answers about the bread))
