Against his better judgement and sense of smell, Sid leaned closer. "What?"

"Y'better.... watch out.... He don' li' normies... too good," At that, the octopus continued giggling, a tentacle sliding forward to pat the man clumsily on his back.

It was all Sid could do not to tense up at the contact. He nodded as if that were sage advice and said, "Gotcha. I'll try not to get mauled."

Billy's attention seemed to slide down Sid's arm, as did his tentacle, which lowered to coil around his wrist to stare silently at the older man's calloused hands. He wobbled, making a little strangled noise in the back of his throat.

Sid kept still, falling back to that old method with rattlesnakes... At least, he was pretty sure that was what you did with rattlesnakes. "Careful," he said, he raised his other hand, but he couldn't easily catch anything with it still around the cane. "You okay?"

Suddenly, Billy's chemicals got the best of him and the bad ones came surging back, like a painfull numbness to the edges of his conciousness, "I used t'have hands..." his voice came out high and tight in his throat, his round, purple octopussian eyes bubbling hideously with tears as a second and third limb snaked up to feel each finger and knickle and nail, "used t'have fingers.... used t'have toes...!" With that, the octopus gave a miserable sob.

Sid turned his head away and closed his eyes. Somewhere, he knew, someone was laughing at him. He thought about maybe giving a comforting pat, but he couldn't think of any part he'd want to touch beyond the collar... Maybe a pat on the head, but no, that'd be demeaning to anybody.
He opened one eye and glanced back in the futile hope the moment would pass quickly. When it didn't it was clear he had to say something.
"They're not so great," he said. "Could never stop biting my nails..."

Billy's grip tightened around his wrists, snaking between the digits, "They fell off... jes' pealed on off don' remember wha' they felt li' no more..." He gave another mortified sob, threatening to crush.

Sid grit his teeth and a decidely unmanly squeak found its way out of his throat. "I feel for you," he gasped. He had to fight the urge to pull against Billy, knowing that would likely make it worse. "I really do, man... but... right now... you're sorta crushing mine."

Befor he caught do any damage, though, the light flickered and the grinding noise was back and the tentacles went slack to hang from Sid's hand by the suckers. His eyes rolled and he leaned back in his chair with a little noise in the back of his throat.

As soon as his hand was free Sid held his arm up to survey the damage. He clicked his tongue over the sucker marks left behind. "God I hope that fades," he muttered. Only then did he think to look at Billy. If there was any doubt left over what the collar was for, that last bit of activity killed it. Sid leaned closer to examine Billy, afraid that maybe it had done the same to the octopus man-thing. How would he explain something like that? Say he didn't mean to do it?
"Hey," he said softly. He waved his hand in front of Billy's face. "Still with me here?"
Even as he asked it, Sid wondered how the how he would be able to so much as check his pulse.

Billy gave a little groan, his head lolling as he fidgeted in his chair, "Bein' good... m'bein' good...!" He groaned miserably, "M'bein' good..."

Billy's misery gave Sid's conscience another swift kick in the pants. He sighed and glanced around, but it was too much to hope that the noble kid with the chicken wings would make another fortuitous appearance. That made Sid himself groan.
"You want me to push you anywhere?" he asked. He tried to work out how difficult that would be when he wasn't exactly all that able himself. "...If only just the shade? Huh?"

"Th'shade.... b'nice..." He sniffed, tentacles sluggishly coiling up and out of the way of the wheels, "Sun hot...n'dry...."

"Very," Sid agreed. He slipped his cane to the crook of his arm and seized both handles of the wheelchair. If he was lucky he could make it at least a few minutes before his leg started to complain. The problem was the chair had already sank into the mud a little. He grit his teeth and put his weight into it. Just as he thought, it was a few minutes before his leg started to hurt, which happened to be when he finally got the chair to budge. He was panting by the time he got into the shade of a nice tree. With nothing nearby to sit on, Sid was left to lean against the trunk.
"Better?" he asked. He meant for that to sound light, like it hadn't been any trouble. Instead, thanks to the throbbing that was building in his knee, it came out brusque.
