I love being in a big section... I'm the only alto sax in my grade that's been there since freshan year, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to be section leader when I'm a senior. Being section leader of the 2nd biggest section in the band is going to PWN!!! biggrin

I am the only French Horn... And there are only two Bass's (jaz band), one piccolo(sp), one baratone, one trombone, sometimes two (concert), two altos (concert), two trumpets (concert), two clarinets (concert), and one drummer... We are a very small band, so everyone has a different part, so you are ALWAYS heard! stare That is not nessisarily good... And I am a freshmen, so I am behind the rest, and have been playing it only for three years, the rest have played their insterments longer, only one year for the bas... But still... I have been playing the guitar for seven so i didn't have to learn the notes... But my point is that it is very nerve recking...

for me, being an only instrument would be cool, because your the only one right? and that makes you look special, because you play an instrument that no one in your band group plays. =).

when i was in my first year of band, i was othe only sax. i kinda liked it, but still felt lonely, cause the clarinets and other instruments didn't want to talk gonk but then in my second year, i was the only girl. i was better than one of the other guys, which made me happy, but they were so annoying... one contantly kicked me!!! i am not totally sure on which was better, cause as a beginner, i made tons of mistakes. i guess it all depends on who you sit by smile

I'm the only tuba player in symphonic band, and last year I was the only sousaphone in marching band. Next year I'll be the only girl tuba in concert band, and the year after that I'll be the only girl tuba in both SWE and concert band.

There are seriously almost twenty flutes in my band (of 86 this year, I believe). Without playing a solo, it is nearly impossible for one to be heard over all of them because the majority of them are breathy and play at a constant forte level. confused They all generally gravitate towards either the easiest part or the most prominent, so I make up for it by playing the part lesser played, to make a horrible pun on Robert Frost. wink
All the same, while flutes sound lovely in harmony, I would adore the privilege of being the only flautist. It may be exponentially more nerve-wracking, but the expressional freedom is so far greater that even embarrassment from sight reading would be rather worth it. :)

I am not alone! In concert I play clarinet as 2nd chair and sometimes wish I was alond. But, in marching I play the Marching Horn and I love it. Even with as small of a band as I am in I have a section who has adopted me(the saxes)! It may help that I am one of their number during jazz band though. Next year one of my best friends in the band is playing with me!!! Good news about playing the horn though, I got into OVAC's, which is basically marching honors band of around 175 or 200 students for a big charity classic football game (if you live around lower Ohio or northern WV you have probably heard of it) as a freshman!

Well, I am the only female Saxist in my band, which sucks. This gives the Asshats in my section all rights and reasons to bomb on me. Ha! next year, I no longer will be a part of my schools band! Instaid, because of my tech classes I'm inspiring after, I will be taking private lessons! and if things play out right, I'll be back and better the year after and I shall bomb on them!!! MUAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!! asshats.

Im the only contra clarinet, but thats not really surprising. Theres only one of each instrument in the low section (excluding the bari saxes -2- and the double basses -2-) so we kinda banded together to form our own little section.

Last year I was in the 12 member trumpet section, but after our baritone player left, I picked it up and am now the only one. For some concerts, a kid from grade 12 comes and plays too, but most of the time it's just me!
