Have a sectional! Like just go throught the commands then u yell them out and then go around and perfect everyone. But to make it exciting my band plays drill down. Where everyone gets into a block and from there they yell out commands and if you mess up then your out. So basically its the last one standing kind thing. It rocks thats how I learned!

Concentration Blocks!!!!! And then you have a tumor sticking out because you have too many people for an even block!!! I'm a Junior this year, but my Freshmen year my section leader had us do those, apparently the band director before used to have them all do it. I was so proud the first time we 'played' I was the last Freshmen standing, and second place overall xp Thanks for reminding me!!! I'll have to talk to my rank leader (the one actually more in charge of marching{Section has more power than Rank, but Section concentrates more on sound and Rank more on footwork, but they both work together, in my band}) and work that out and see if they wanna do that! 4laugh

In our school it's always been oldest=section leader. No one's ever really questioned it. And I'm gonna be section leader next year. And although most people in my section like me, there's one or two who are just disagreeable people to begin with. How do you deal with people like that?
Oh... And how do you deal with people in your section a grade under you who are already asking who's gonna be section leader? gonk I don't know what to tell them! I'll be section leader for two years after this season... WHY DO THEY CARE?!?!?! It's driving me nuts and I told them that maybe they should vote for it, but that doesn't seem to please them.... Help?

Felixue Hey all! My name's Nicole + I play Alto Sax. I have been granted the position of saxophone section leader for the upcoming marching band season. Monday is our band's first rehearsal, for the Memorial Day parade. So, I am asking all you experienced section leadrs, or just students, out there for advice. What's a good way of teaching commands? What, do you think, is the most effective music memorization technique? Any help is greatly appreciated! Wow. I share your pain. I'm in that position too. But luckly my section listens biggrin Some great adivce is not to be too lad back about your job and not too tense. I was learning the hard way of being tensed up. But freshmen are pretty scared so it shouldn't be too hard...I don't know if thats great advice. But thats what I'm learning.

Just relax, and enjoy it, but don't be too relaxed. You need to be assertive, but calm. Don't yell at them too much, or they won't listen to you. Just have fun with it.

I start off with a little sit-down with the freshmen. I tell them how the saxes are always the best, and we ususally don't practice so if they work hard and get it right the first time they can do whatever they want during sectionals and go hang out with their friends. But if they don't have it or refuse to do anything they have to stay and work on stuff with me. Otherwise we pretty much sleep. So they learn it fast and don't have to do anything at all.
For commands, make the freshmen do it all together first. Then single out the people that seem to be having trouble. Make little 16-count excercises for them to do so you can watch them. And correct them if they mess up on the field.
Just don't be a total b***h, otherwise they'll go to the other squad people and be like "what the heck, she's such a b***h". Haha.

It depends if the other people listen to you. I'm the section leader in pit. If I ******** get stuck in pit, then I better be section leader!!! Ok, I'm done. Anyway, this junior, I said to him, come here. I need to teach you that warm up that you mssed. (I love Gargamel....sp?) Anyway, he's like I don't want to. I'm not going to right now. I'll learn it later. I was like, no....on the scedual, (we get a scedual as to what to play at certain times, 'cause we're left alone for an hour and a half and we're supose to stay on track.....) Anyway, he's like, I'm not listening to some stupid freshmen! I hate him. He is sooo anoying. He thinks he's better than all of us just because he's older. He can ******** himself. I hate his guts!!!!!!!!!!! Ok....*deep breath*.....anyway....When you're practicing with them, play the whole song, PAY ATTENTON, and then work on the parts that they had problems with, even if it's just one person.

Sectionals, and as for memorization? practice one part of the piece first, like the first 8 measures until you can get it down and memorized, and then go beyond that...
