Bubba starts tomorrow and is currently driving me crazy! He has checked his box (yes, BOX - you wouldn't believe the list they mailed home a couple weeks ago) of school supplies hourly, pouring over the contents.
He can hardly contain his enthusiasm, but of course, he has been home schooled for so long now, he looks at regualar school as a chance to make lots of new friends.... again. I really hope all the progress made since the second grade will show in his 5th grade re-entry. sweatdrop

School buses and zones in general are one of the really good things in Las Vegas. Here when the lights are flashing while the bus is stopped it is absolutely taboo to drive past from either side of the street, and in the school zones the fines are extremely high and much more enforced than I had ever seen when I lived back in California. I suspect that is partly thanks to the large nd active LDS community here in Las Vegas, same reason Home Schooling was so easy to set up and facilitate here as they are big advocates of children.

Well I talked to one of the parents that was at the bus stop this morning. We were waiting on the busses and she told me that her card said the exact same thing. She called the bus company and flat out refused to have her kids cross that road, and then spoke with the driver who said it was fine to continue the way they had been. She suggested I call the bus company myself so I did that this afternoon.

They were very nice and are going to recheck Toni's route to see if there is any way we can avoid her crossing Hansen to get on her bus in the mornings (she doesnt have to cross in the afternoon which is a relief because its MUCH busier) They said they dont like any of the children crossing to catch the bus, espically elementary kids, and espically on that road because cars do not stop for the bus lights. Shes going to get back to me about an alternative if possible, and now we know where shes getting picked up at with no more worries sweatdrop

*gets nauseous at the thought of kids crossing streets and getting hit by cars!* It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's a huge thing! A 4th grader who went to class with my sister-in-law Angela was walking home with her 2 friends, and although her 2 friends said "don't go!" she ran across a very busy, high speed street (50mph I think) and got struck and killed. There's an overpass right there so people crossing don't have to worry about traffic, but it's not always used. The young man who was driving the car felt so awful, but the girl's parents were very sympathetic and said there was nothing he could do, and they invited him to sit with them at the funeral.

People coming down this street often go faster than what I'd like, but it's not a huge street or very far to cross. But it is hilly and you can't see very far either direction, so listening for cars is probably at least as important as looking for them!

it just amazes me that there are so many people who just dont pay attention to those buses when they are stopped...they dont care that there are kids crossing or not..they just want to haul azz past instead of waiting a few minutes for everyones safety....luckily the bus that jake has been riding comes right to my house...it is a buss just for the kids who have disabilities like jakes and for the kidlets in the wheel chairs that go to the city schools....the twins ride along with him now on that bus cause they are going to the same class that jake went to when he turned 3.....

Wow I"m surprised that there are places that people will do that. I live in Wisconsin and as far as I know no one passes a school bus with lights on. But then its more of a rural state so more of common sense but I'm not sure how its like in the citys.

Butler really isnt all that big, but it can get extremely busy. Especially where Toni catches the bus. I have seen cars drive right past when the bus has its red lights flashing, and Toni wasnt crossing the street to catch the bus either. They most likely figured that no kids were crosssing that it was ok to just go right on past without stopping. I would always hope there was a cop around but no luck. Until an alternate route is found Toni will just have to look both ways before stepping out onto that street. And heaven forbid something happens to her........having a sister that works for a successful law firm does have its perks 3nodding

Oh Lizzy how did Bubba like his first day back at school?? Everything go ok with him? Does he like it?

Drivers are even worse here in CA! I stop for the bus everyday while taking my bubba to school. He could be on it, but it's easier for me to drop him off, so we always are either in front or behind the bus. Anyway, I think me and maybe two other cars will stop in this neighborhood. It is sooooo wrong especially when there are three schools on Western; two elementary and one high school. All within the same block. You would think they would learn by now.

But it is fun to watch when the police are sitting on the corner just waving people to pull over... BUSTED!
