Breakfast On Pluto is a rare exception to the rule of books being superior to movies. I know there were some who didn't like the changes that were made when adapting it to film, like exchanging "Kitten" for "p***y", but I felt that the movie far surpassed the original novel. If the book hadn't been so short, I probably would have thrown it aside in disgust. Writing like an epileptic on a sugar high is only so cute as one or two chapters worth. After that it just gets annoying.

I look forward to seeing the movie version of The Lovely Bones. This should be interesting.

I always try to read the book before i see the movie the only book i can think of that i haven't done that is jurassic park....it is one of the reasons i read eragon though i was planning on reading it anyways and i made sure to read the hitchhikers books before that movie came out and ended up falling in love with those books they are so werid and random it is amazing! I think that alot of books are better then there movie counterparts i can't think of one instance where it is the other way around.

Hearts In Atlantis was actually not a bad movie. They were some minor things that I noticed but they actually didn't bother me much. They stayed with the storyline pretty well but there were a few deviations from the storyline like they left out some of the more adult parts and I understand that.

The only thing I really didn't like was they cut out a little more than half the book since they didn't do any of the later parts where they're grown up a little more except the very last part where Bobby goes back to Harwich. The only part I really missed from the later parts that they cut out was when Sully- john
died in with mamasan and all the stuff falling around him and he finds bobby's old glove

The Princess Diaries was probably one of the worst books gone Hollywood. If you haven't read the series than it;s a good movie but if you've read the series than it screwed up so badly. They skipped like two books, the completely cut out some really good parts in the books and one really major thing is in the books her father isn't dead, he just has testicular cancer. Thats way different from dying. Another major thing is she lives in New York in the books but in the movie she lives across the country in San Franciso.

One of the bigger things that I was so mad about them cutting out was in the book she actually goes out with Michael! It wasn't even a one date thing, they are a couple for like three books so far. (Lily's brother for those of you who can'tremember) In the movie it doesn't even mention her crush, it kind of implyed it but in the book they talk about it a lot.

Lets say there is an actual line of the book and the first one was a mile off. Well the second one was on the moon it was so off. The almost general storyline of the book was there but otherwise it was just out to lunch.

I could keep ranting about this but for your sanity and my own I'll stop.

I heard that Peter Jackson is going to be the director so there's a plus.

I posted this on the repeat thread, I guess. Sorry. ]:

I'm going to choose to comment on Memoirs of a Geisha.

The book is absolutely brilliant.
But the movie is also stunning.
I felt, honestly, that they did an excellent job portraying the essence of the story.
Granted, they can't include everything, but the work was stunning, the heart of the piece remained intact, and Sayuri's story was still told in vivid and stunning detail.

They did a wonderful job of combining elements to still bring across the point. For example, in the book Mameha purposefully schemes to throw Sayuri into the path of an artist, who then uses her face as -the- face of Japan on his latest poster. In the movie, Sayuri's starring role in the spring festival (which also happens in the book) leads her face to be on the advertisements plastered all over the city. The point made was the same, and the ensuing strife between Hatsumomo, Pumpkin, and Sayuri remained and developed nicely despite that artistic license in combining those storylines.
That's just one example of how they did a good job.

You can argue about the origin of the actors (not being Japanese, but Chinese, for the most part), but you have to realize... Memoirs doesn't tell a story for the Japanese people. It tells a story for the rest of the world about a piece of Japanese history and culture shrouded in mystique. I think it's fitting that the cast reflect the true audience intended for the movie and novel's message.

Reading the book is definately a good idea since about 95% of the time the books are better than the film.

Lord of The Rings made a great movie, I thought. After I saw it I liked it so much that I bought the books and sat in a tent in the garden for two days to read them.

The Harry Potter movies have to be some of the worst adaptions ever! Good movies if you've never read the books, but as someone who loves the books, I can't stand the movies. So much left out, some pretty dodgy filming in Prisoner of Azkaban, bad acting.... Arrgghh!!

Pride and Predudice and Girl, Interrupted are two movies that have made me add their books to my list of books I have to read. Great movies, and Im interested to see if the books are better.

Oops... I accidentally posted a repeat thread sweatdrop Sorry.

I do think that the movie version of Memoirs of a Geisha was very pretty, but I noticed that they left out a lot of backstory. I heart both, but I like the book better.

The Lord of the Rings also left out a lot of things, but that's what happens when you try to fit a novel into three hours' space. But the movie also has a really cute Legolas... *fangirlishness*

Has anyone mentioned Troy? Well, it was based on the Iliad, right? In that case, book=better. Plus, there are always old plays (think Shakespeare) that were written down so they could be passed on and later turned into movies. It might count if the original script was altered or something. [/crazy tangent]

Don't even get me started on Eragon. Just don't. *slightly pissed off* The first book was OK despite being cliche as hell, but the movie... burning_eyes

I haven't watched the Harry Potter movies to know if they're better or not. It seems I'm the only person in the world who hasn't.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie only left out... oh, the whole plot.

Yup, most of the time, books are better than movies.

I think people should read the book before the movie because often times movies change things or leave things out. Movies often change the order of events. Most the time when I see a movie and I've read the book I believe the book it much better because the movie leaves too much out.

I've read through the entire thread now, and I've noticed that no-one has mentioned my favourite book gone Hollywood: James Bond! Talk about making the movie better than the books... I know that in the movies, you can actually see the car chases and the figthing and so on, but really! If you think the James that is on-screen is lacking depth, you sohuld see the one on the books! If you've ever seen Pokemon, and remember the guy who always fell in love with every girl he saw, you've got Mr Bond from the books.

MyOwnBestCritic, I heard from my friend that they left out a ton in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Also you mentioning the Illiad confirmed that I got some question right on a test yesterday. (It was about the Oddesey) yay! I was worried about that question too...

Has anyone seen Bridge to Terabithia? I want to see it but my mom doesn't want to see it and the few of my friends who did want to see it already have. From the commercials I have seen for the movie it looks like it got changed a lot but I still wanna see it to see how much they changed stuff in the movie.
