Ambrose's lips pulled back into a strange smile that exposed his long, sharpened teeth. Reaching out with his massive paw-hand, he wrapped it around Lucas's - the pads and fur undenyably real against Lucas's skin.
"You... shouldn't feel stupid. They had me duped for weeks before my first change thinking I was here for a two-week medical study. As much as I wish it were under better circumstances... it is nice to meet you, Lucas. And yes, It's Ambrose... Ambrose Maurlias."
He shook his heavy head, leaning back against the tree. "I think... I think I just need some time to myself for a while. Get... used to this before I head back to the village. Do you need a point in the right direction?"

It had been a greeting. Partly. Lucas had also wanted to feel it, to let himself touch what he'd been looking at, to leave no doubt of the truth. It felt real. It felt like a paw.
"Yes, but I should have recognized the signs." He rubbed his arm in the place Sabin injected him.
Lucas nodded, glancing back and forth. "Yeah. If you could." He reached into his pocket and fingered the key. "They just let you wander around as you please here?"

"Yes, thank god for small favors. We have our run of the island, save for the labs. The fence around it - I'm sure you saw it - is electrified. Keep an eye out, however. Not all of the islanders are as... civil as I am. I've heard stories of attacks. The labs moniter us at all times, as well - which is a blessing and a curse. The only blessing being they can somehow remotely knock us out if someone causes trouble. I'm sure you can think of the negative repercussions, though. And they're not always as quick with the knocking out as they should be."
Ambrose slowly got to his feet again. After the initial change and the slackening of adrenaline, a dull ache was remaining, and he felt tired."
Lifting his muzzle to the air, he closed his eyes. If anything, he could swear his nose was even more sensitive than before - he could smell lingering cooked food that symbolized the cafeteria... he could smell where the edge of the jungle was off in a different direction.
Looking back to Lucas he pointed towards the village. "The village is in that direction.... I'd hazard .... maybe half a mile. Or, if you don't want to risk getting lost, I think that the road is that way..." He pointed off to the side. "Probably a few hundred feet."

"Great." At least they weren't confined to cages or cells.
Realizing he was fidgeting again, he kept his hands gripped around his bag strap. "I think I'll go with the road." It would probably be better that way. It would give him time to think on his own.
"Thanks again." Lucas turned and started for the road.

Ambrose nodded and thumped back down to a seated position. He gave Lucas a small wave as he turned to go. "Best of luck... if you want to look me up to talk some other time, I'm in Duplex 1."
And with that, Ambrose leaned back up against a tree. One Lucas was out of range, he hunched over, wrapping his arms around himself again and shook, the reality of it all crashing down around him. How much of himself had he lost? The blonde hair that fell into his eyes told him that he still had that much... it... was better than he feared it might be... but still, would anyone recognize him as having ever been human? And what of the urges that were already encroaching on the back of his mind?
With no one around, Ambrose let the fear and sadness take a foothold, needing release. Another pitiful howl broke from his throat before he curled up to try to sleep off the pain and trauma.
