"Mmffh?"

Athan had an entire mouthful of bagel when about a dozen men approached him and slapped their hand onto the table. They were obviously a little more than unhappy with the way things were going, and judging by the haggard look on their faces, they hadn't seen the best of this conflict by far.

"Look pal, you're one of those hotshot mercenaries that walked in here acting like you were going to make a difference here, but we talked it over with everyone and not a one person has seen you on the battlefield. What do you have to say to that?"

A few moments passed by as Athan chewed, indicating only with his finger moving in a circular motion that he was going to answer them in a moment. After he finally swallowed, then looked from his plate to the group in front of him.

"I got held up, alright?"

Athan grinned slightly. It was kind of an offsetting, toothy grin that probably caught the men by surprise.

"But hey, what do you say I make up for that today?"

It was still dark, the sun just rising as the new day began.

Failure, utter failure marked the previous day. The hired hands appeared just as a ragtag unorganized group without any direction, failing to protect all assets under Skinner's control. No discipline. No teamwork. No order.

The order had been issued, and he would oversee it personally...

A small round object, similar to a hockey puck slid into the building, stopping at the dead center. A moment later, it exploded with a sonic boom which could be heard through the entire camp and a large amount of force, enough to throw objects within ten feet a good distance.

He didnt have to say anything. It was time to wake up. Time to file in. Time to strike back.

Fang Ji Long stood by the doorway, fully suited, fully equipped, goggles aglow with merciless light in the dim light of daybreak.

He was already back inside the barracks when the device exploded. Changing into his gear, that sort of thing.

At least he was. The explosion, catching him completely off guard, knocked him on his a** and pegged him with a few smaller items that had been taken out of his duffel. By the time he was able to regain his bearings, Athan was under the impression that they were under attack.

So when he exited the barracks and saw a man in a full body suit, helmet and goggles, well, he wasn't too trusting.

"I don't know who the hell you are..."

Athan's right hand moved to grip the hilt of his sword.

"But you picked the worst possible place to attack."

A few of the UGH mercenaries were already on the move, putting on their uniforms, getting their equipment ready, loading their weapons. They quickly filed out of the building and onto the field, even before they had all their gear on, some even still putting everything together while on the move.

Apparently the soldiers didnt have anything to say to the man, and he nothing back. Made sense though, as he was of course, their commander for this mission.

"Name?" It was the first thing Ji Long said to Athan. A quesion of his identity. He wanted to know who the voluntary mercenaries were. He wanted to know what he had to work with.

He did not reach for any of his weapons.

His eyebrow arched at the question, and it didn't seem like anyone else was at all worried by the man's presence. Athan's hand relinquished its grip on the weapon, then after a moment of hesitation, quickly fell to his side.

"Athan."

He regarded the stranger carefully. He didn't act hostile, but he looked it. The kind of appearance that he soon decided was common of people during wartime. Regardless, the man didn't look to be much of a conversationalist.

"And what should I call you?"
PostPosted: Sat Aug 12, 2006 9:53 am

"Fang." One word answer, his surname.

"Step outside Athan. I may have a mission for you." Quick to react, quick to pick a fight. It appeared that Athan would be expected to be one of the volunteers he would be looking for to eliminate any and all threats in this hostile land.

He would wait for anyone else waking up from the sonic boom to do the same before he had Fourteen, the man with the dark slicked back hair, initially thought to be the officer in charge, to enter the building and wake them up forcefully.

He nodded his head towards the man, heading his way outside and stopping a few yards from the door. Once there, he turned to face the building, reaching up to scratch the back of his head.

"Hope it's not something lame like guard duty..."

He muttered beneath his breath.

Fourteen would have picked up the nearest person and just tossed them outside, however, Ji Long stopped him. No, there were things to be done. Soldiers which needed reinforcements, threats to be eliminated before they grew.

The two UGH soldiers stepped out of the building and onto the field. Ji Long moving to stand before the gathering of UGH soldiers and mercenaries, Fourteen going off to get his equipment.

"I have been issued an order to eliminate any and all threats present," he began, very simply, "I seek a handful of volunteers to act as a strike team to accomplish this goal, acting on speed and efficiency." This was the first part.

"However, as we have missing persons radio-ing in their locations in hostile territory, the first objective is recovery and reinforcement."

It was a given that Ji Long would be overseeing this operation himself, with Fourteen assisting, and a group of UGH soldiers to reinforce potential areas of claim. Now was the time for volunteers to step up, and he already expected Athan to be one of them.

A strike team? That was almost too good to be true. It was all he could do to hide the smile that had found its way to his face when he stepped forward, away from the line that had formed near him.

"I'll do it."

Athan looked around. How many volunteers would there be? After all, they couldn't all go on a search and rescue mission. Besides, he was signing up for the fun stuff. Surely someone else saw it the way he did.

A quick look back to Fang.

"And you can count on me to get it done right."
PostPosted: Sat Aug 12, 2006 11:49 am

A few of the UGH soldiers also stepped forward. some would be counted as reinforcements, while a few others would continue along with the strike team.

"Twenty-six, you're coming along as a part of the medical team." Ji Long added in, knowing that there were injured out in hostile territory.

"Suit up and be ready in five minutes. Dismissed." he concluded as everyone went about their ways back into the building to get the rest of their gear ready for the mission, while everyone else got ready for the day.

At that time, one of the armoured personnel carriers would roll into the field and open up with a hydrolic hiss. Fourteen would step out, fully equipped with a goggle set similar to Ji Long's and carrying a large pack which hooked up to the long rifle he held.

The APC would carry them as far as it could before it would leave the unit to go on by foot, where stealth and speed would play its part. For now, it was only speed.

When everyone boarded the APC, the hatch would close and it would begin to roll out of camp.

Athan nodded his head, and while he wasn't a big fan of riding in vehicles, he'd have to put that aside. Traveling on foot wasn't quick nor efficient in times of war. Besides, with trained soldiers, what could possibly go wrong?

As soon as the APC rolled up, Athan was already heading towards it. His gear had already been equipped by the time he first made it outside. Now it was just time to play the waiting game.

He took one of the standing positions, choosing to grab a small loop that would serve as his anchor for the duration of the ride.

Sam woke up, but well, in her state of undress, she wasn't about to go running anywhere. She ducked under her covers and waited...when nothing else happened, she grabbed her now, thankfully, dry clothing and quickly dressed, checking over her ammuniation before stripping her rifle and making sure she had gotten it cleaned properly the night before. That done, she slung it over her shoulders and headed out.

Considering there were several barracks, they couldn't all be woken up with an offer to leap aboard an APC and go off to heroic journeys. The concussive blast was still enough to jar Jacob awake, but with no call of alarm that was all it did.

He took his time to stand up, crack his back and sides, and wander off towards the showers. When he returned it was still in clothes that were stiff from sweat and grime, but they'd have to do. He suited up fully, donning the bucklers and placing the pistol in it's familiar spot at his lower back, and strapped the axes in at his sides. He'd preffer to carry them in the duffle, but in its absence he'd have to deal with them like it was always combat.

He moved out himself, at this point catching sight of Sam. Elation at her still being alive fought with shame at their--his--defeat... and he compromised by trying to ignore her and moving off towards the larger corrugated metal buildings. He needed another radio, and anyone would congregate near the vehicles before leaving camp...

Shouyin awoke to the incessant chatter that made up the many requests for assistance assaulting his radio. Or maybe there was just one and the rest and been some figment of imagination inserted during the post-waking state. Whatever the case, stuff was happening again, and the half-golem had slept way too long.

So his jacket was done back up, harness reattached and adjusted, all weapons remaining in place long enough for him to get comfortable. Gloves, socks and boots were put back on, the duffel bag tossed on the bunk, and he was out of the barracks.
