I liked Ace... I considered her to be better than any of the companions the Doctor has had since Romana II left the show.
There was only one thing that really annoyed me about Ace: her constant whining about Perivale! I mean, how bad could the place really be?! cheese_whine

Ace was always well liked in the old Who Club I used to go see episodes with when someone got pirate VHS tapes in of the latest episodes. We thought it was great that she didn't scream or trip, she hit things & blew things up! whee

Didn't Ace win the companion competition?
She beat up her competitors and came out victorious, juggling several cans of nitro 9 above her head...
Indeed she did win that competition. I think she seems unpopular because the 7th doctor had the worst of the seasons (altogether and due to no fault of his own or his companions{mostly})
