she's called Aerith for two reasons. That's how it is in the japanese game, since they don't have "S" and Kingdom hearts called her that as well. I think they did that the same reason they call Squall Leon.

Because in the original Japanese version, her name was supposed to be Aerith, but since the Japanese language lacks the "th" sound, they write it as Aerisu, and when translated the translators didn't know the original intent of the creator, so they said it was Aeris.

4laugh Her name is Aerith, I have played both versions of the game and Aeris is an English mistranslation. It happens all the time in games and even the anime we watch, which is why I usually prefer the Japanese versions better,
And for some God awful reason, they actually killed her off in the American version, whereas in the Japaneese version you can keep Aerith in your party still... 4laugh

Its funny because Aeris is the greek/roman (one of them) goddess of malicious mischeif and chaos. So that typo changes the connotation of her name towards her character.
And she dies in both japanese and english versions. Its just a code that brings her back to be playable in battle.

if you ask me aerith sounds better becuz aeris sounds like someone with a lisp or someone you thinks shes some greek goddes (eris)

considering the fact the game is originally japanese and in japan it is Aerith plus Advent Children its aerith AND Kingdom Hearts has her name Aerith then it doesnt matter if it sounds better Aeris or anything else the original name was Aerith and thats how you should say it even if the mistranslated it plus there are more games where the same girl has the name Aerith adding to what you should call her

Aeris is how everyone who didnt play the Japanese version of the original saw her name. Thats the one that sticks the most outside of Japan and the one most people recognize as being the proper spelling.
Both are correct, its just a matter of personal preference and an insight as to how long youve been following the FFVII Universe.

Riku-the-Dog Thatt mistranslation may be true. Because there was another mistranslation like when you were fighting the scorpion and it says "Attack when it's tail is up" when it was supposed to be "Don't attack when its tail is up" That One screwed me the first time I played!!!

you it's not really even a mistranslation, but a matter of choice, because of the japanese pronunciation it is pronounced eirisu which could be pronounced as either Aeris or Aerith. because if you look at the pronunciation of Sephiroth's name, it is pronounced as Sephirosu, which assumedly could also be pronounce either way yet they just stuck with Sephiroth cause it looks and sounds cooler
