I need something to reference the stuff off of myself. These are the ones I'm going to base off of (just thought of, not from a particular source)--assume the "if applicable" tagged onto the end rolleyes as well as formal vs informal... Hello Goodbye Good morning Good day Good afternoon Good evening Good night Where's the restroom? How are you? I'm fine. I'm not well. Where is [insert noun here]? How do I get to [insert noun here]? Please Thank you **** off and die! [I don't trust ratings to be standard. Not that you don't know what to fill in the blank with anyway rolleyes ] I'm a rabid tourist, pay me no mind. I'm a tourist, please don't hurt me. I NO SPEAK YOU LANGUAGE!! What is [insert word here] in [insert language here]? Do you speak [insert language here]?

I don't think that "I NO SPEAK YOU LANGUAGE" would work very well in Aquenandi, because if one were to say something like that they would be likely to be lynched. xd

Eccentric Iconoclast I don't think that "I NO SPEAK YOU LANGUAGE" would work very well in Aquenandi, because if one were to say something like that they would be likely to be lynched. xd Same in most, probably rolleyes It's for people who either are too lazy or just don't have the opportunity to learn (ie, if someone's shipped off for business and doesn't have time to actually learn more than the absolute minimum)... though they probably should say "Sorry, I don't speak [language]" razz Basically, it's for my motherI don't like talking to people much out in public, so I'm consantly reminding myself how to say "I don't speak English" in different languages (besides Spanish, French, and German, which are fairly popular since they're taught in schools more than others) Usually it's Portuguese, since I remember it easily: Não falo inglês ("Naong falu inglish" is my approx pronunciation; I don't have a nasal scheme rolleyes ) "AR NIN SESA DEUYA SESA!!" Doesn't that sound dumb as hell?

xd I thought I was the only one who did that to avoid speaking to people in public. Lately, I've been using Russian.
"Я не говорю по-английски!" (pronounced something like "yah nyeh gahvahrYOO poh ahngGLEEskee!") is generally what I say when people try to talk to me, especially if they're annoying. I can also say "I don't speak English!" in various accents and degrees of bad English (my favourite being the French "I not speak very English!")
It's very useful. If I'm in a crowd of multilinguals I generally speak Aquénandi (although I'm usually more likely to speak to polyglots than others).
"Mas' Aŋlikwena ši pukwenve!"

ha ha That sounds like fun. It might helps to get the other kids away from me when I go outside. I usually like to be by myself or with my brother and other kids tend to come to me. As shy as I am I go as long as I can without talking to them. Maybe saying something in another language will make them go away! xd
(I just repeated myself there..boy I really need to work on that...)

Yep, tis quite useful. I should say it in Kintaran XD then no one will be able to talk to me!! hah! (I heard sooo much Portuguese around the campus where I just visited [I'm college hopping]) "Ar nin sesa Inglis*" (the * is the soften mark (written as a dot over the letter), which makes the sound go down from s-normal to s-almost-sh) Again, no tense because it's not a particular time, it simply is or is not. biggrin Eccentric Iconoclast "Я не говорю по-английски!" I can also say "I don't speak English!" in various accents and degrees of bad English (my favourite being the French "I not speak very English!") Yeah, I have to keep reminding myself that it's angliyski, not anglicky (anglitsky)--I learned it in czech first! rofl čtyři is the czech for 4, russian is said almost the same but has more vowels in it 3nodding "chyetirye", i think sweatdrop I generally suck at numbers in foreign languages, probably since I'm so used to dealing with them written on paper, not said out. JIC--my translit of that would be "Ya ne govoryu po-angliyski!", though it ocould be angleyski and be correct, since that woudl be pronounced the same. I often say something that sounds like "Eaiy... deunnut spikk Inglish..." (double k is a sort of hard sound...)

Ever since I've had a beard, people have been mistaking me for Middle Eastern or Hebrew or Hispanic for some reason (I guess I'm just convincing enough), so I think if I wanted to get rid of someone, I could just start speaking in Spanish, saying "No te entiendo..." and so on in an intimidatingly casual "native speaker who probably doesn't speak English very well" kind of dialect.
This drunk and probably homeless guy was bothering me this past weekend at a show I went to; I should've tried it out then! stressed

Updated Handy Prases and Vocab #2.
One phrase has a little backstory, if you'll see in Vocab section (I have the Old Kintaran way of saying it--it didn't reform like most things, it simplified from it almost directly razz )
I tend to surprise people when I speak other languages. Like this one time at the doctor's office, I suddenly said "Mi chaqueta es mi amiga," and the nurse just kind of stared at me rolleyes I carry my jacket around EVERYWHERE, cuz there's always AC. Well, not here, but that's cuz them yankees figgered they dun need any rolleyes

I tend to transliterate it as "Ja ne govorju po-anglijski!"
Using 'y' can get confusing; 'ы' is generally transliterated as 'y', and the 'j' character is open (for ж I just use ž). wink

I used to translit kintaran that way, actually, but changed it so one letter made one sound, just as it is in the alphabet biggrin besides soften/harden and stress, anywayI've posted writing section in my last reserved spot... I guess maybe I should've gotten more? rolleyes

I added the word for "if" (ziq, and remember kids, that's "theekh" (soft th) smile ) as well as a phrase to the "handy phrases".
Yes, I realize that to an extent, this language is oversimplified; it's just that the "extra words" like many languages have are mostly just remnants of the older version.
In REALLY old literature, you may come across teh phrase "zao vantor fe", which doesn't even follow the modern pronunciation rules--z as in English, v is as in English as well! The ao makes the "ow" sound, as it would now... This phrase means "You disgust me"!! rofl So "zao" *can* be used as a formal form of you; maybe if you wanted to you could use it as "thee/thou" or as in Usted in Spanish, but it's rare. It's like you get to have a meeting with the Daemon, and don't realize that the leader of Kintara is really just like everyone else (besides the title and the diplomacy stuff razz ), and you're all exited and worried about insulting him/her, so you say "Zao" Instead of "Deu" rofl
I need to fix up the culture thing and post it here. Grar, I'm out of reserves!! *dies*
