Journal
2005-06-21
Well, there's been quite a few things happen in the last week or so - mostly revolving around how much trouble Tsu can lead Pueblo into without getting caught. On the whole though it's not been so bad having two around instead of one. They amuse each other, which is often a wonderful bonus.

I'm starting to wonder, as I watch the two of them interact, about many things to do with the Aerandir. I could ask other people I suppose. But wouldn't that sort of defeat the purpose of being here? I really want to watch and learn, sometimes by interaction, others through observation. How their social circles might work, or perhaps how they interact with their youngers and elders. It's a lot to muse about, I know that. But you can't help watching them in wonder...

Tsukai, of course unable to read any of this, hopped up onto the desk and sat on the open journal, nudging at Kiro who had fallen asleep at his desk. The neko-jin had been up, waiting for Pueblo to fall asleep, and had obviously been fighting a losing battle with the Aerandir.

After failing to get a response from the sleeping neko-jin, Tsukai hopped off the desk to Pueblo, peeping softly as he hopped onto her bed and nuzzled her with his head instead. As his touch, she seemed to toss uncomfortably. Tsukai ruffled his feathers a little, tilted his head, and tried again - this time choosing to poke her a little with his beak. The same reaction.

Normally, Tsu would've assumed he was being ignored. But something seemed... off... and the mousey creature couldn't identify what was amiss. This called for some Kiro-shaped-people action!! So, promptly, Tsu hopped off the bed and half leaped, half flew towards the neko-jin who was still slumped asleep at the desk. He paused for a moment, wondering how best to wake the neko-jin.

Tried and tested methods worked best.

He hopped up, scrabbling in Kiro's hair for a second, earning himself a confused and sleepy mumble, before opening his beak and clamping down on Kiro's ear. This startled the unconscious boy into wakefulness with a curse, raising a hand to swat at Tsu sharply. "Tsu?! What'd'you think you're doing?!" He soon stopped the swatting and the cursing, however, upon hearing the Aerandir's concerned peep. Something was up. "What is it?" he murmured absently, watching the furry being hop from the desk and flit quickly towards Pueblo.

Getting to his feet, Kiro followed his charge into the other room to find that Pueblo was having an uncomfortable night. She was tossing and turning, her eyes screwed up in... something... Kiro couldn't honestly say he knew what it was. He sat quietly on the edge of the bed, and put a hand on her shoulder gently. She seemed to stop at the contact, whether soothed or unnerved by it was anyone's guess.

He paused, not sure what to do next, unaware that she was already awake. "You okay Bobo?"

A sniffley set of sobs were all Kiro could hear, as he raised his other hand to pet Tsukai gently. The smallest of them had taken his usual position at Kiro's neck and was watching on worriedly.

"Hey, hey shh..." Kiro leaned across to peer at Pueblo. "What's wrong kiddo?"

"I... I wan' mommy...!" Suddenly, she turned and latched onto Kiro's waist, surprising the neko-jin. "...wan' mommy..."

"Oh... Bobo..." Kiro sighed gently, suddenly working it out. Fae had been gone for more than a week now. It didn't take a genius to work out that Pueblo missed her. Maybe she even thought she'd been abandoned... Such things were easy to hide in the daylight, when you had things to do and friends around you. But night-time was always a breeding-ground for such worries. "Your mother's coming back... she said she would didn't she?" He hugged her lightly, not really sure what else to do.

More distressed sniffling. It seemed to be slowing down a little now though. Was she going back to sleep? Gently Kiro stroked the little girl's head, certain that she was.

Sighing again, Kiro tilted his head to rub his cheek against the nestled Aerandir at his neck. "You okay there buddy?" A gentle peep and a returned nuzzled was Tsukai's reply. Kiro could also feel Tsukai's thin tendril of a tail at the nape of his neck - a sign that the small animal was after closeness. He could obviously feel the discomfort in the air, the same way Kiro could. "She'll be okay - she's just a little homesick I guess. It'll work itself out by morning." Another quiet peep, this one of agreement.

Pinned as he was by Pueblo's grip on his waist - Kiro didn't move from where he was all night. Neither did Tsukai, determined to stay by his guardian's side, as well as his newfound friend's. One thing was certain, however. Kiro didn't fall asleep this time...

It was nearing evening as Kiro sat again at the desk, flipping the journal open in the awareness he'd been neglecting it again. Even if Pueblo was with them, it wasn't an excuse to stop recording what was going on. In fact, it was even more important than ever - Fae would want to know what her daughter had been up to in her absence, surely.

Journal
2005-06-29
Well, we've had an eventful few days. We met Dragonfly and Iniko (who Tsu and I didn't know, but Pueblo had obviously met them before) and headed down to the beach. Not sure whether it's because he's small or not, but Tsu definately doesn't like water too much. Luckily the other two were a little bigger and able to help him out some.

Pueblo also had (what I gather was) her first donut that day too. I hope Fae doesn't mind me letting her have sweets, but she seemed to enjoy it. And it can't hurt I suppose. I'm glad Pueblo doesn't seem to be as picky as Tsu, it seems like she'll eat anything.

Absently, Kiro paused, the pen hovering gently above the paper. He wasn't really sure what else to write... He listened, his ears twitching slightly, trying to hear what the Aerandir had been doing. He could hear them in the other end of the 'room' - through the doorway in the wall. He'd given Pueblo some paper and a pen. It was lined paper, but he didn't think it would bother the little Aerandir. And he'd been able to give her a variety of coloured ballpoints. She should be able to figure something out...?

Rising, Kiro put down the pen - intending to come back to the journal entry later. He was just going to go have a quick peek at what they were doing. He hung through the doorway quietly, and was surprised at the sight in front of him. Tsu seemed to be posing for the young artist, who was sitting on the floor crosslegged and supporting the pad of paper on one knee. She had the pens she had been given spread out on the floor beside her, as well as a few Kiro didn't recognise. They were probably ones she'd brought with her from home.

Quietly, the neko-jin moved into the doorway more comfortably, aware he couldn't be seen by the little girl with her back to him and concentrating as hard as she was. He leaned back a little and watched her, her elbows and shoulders moving as she attempted to draw Tsu (who seemed to enjoy posing perhaps a little too much). She also kept making sounds of exasperation. She wasn't a perfect artist yet, and she knew it, and evidently seemed to keep making strokes she disliked. Kiro supposed that must be a disadvantage to working in ballpoints.

The neko-jin smiled quietly, before moving back through to finish that journal entry.

Journal
Seems like they're keeping themselves occupied. Pueblo seems to be doing what comes naturally - namely drawing - and Tsukai seems perfectly willing to let her - namely by posing for her. I swear, that's the longest time I've seen him in one place since he was in his jar...

Wonder how much longer Fae'll be gone... I can tell Pueblo misses her...

He couldn't actually remember what he'd gone out into the centre for. It was one of those times when you step outside... and your mind draws a blank. He had been attracted, however, to the small pile of letters that must have been a few days old by now. On a whim, the neko-jin had sifted through them, idly wondering if there was anything from Kandera - one of his classmates. Nothing from her, but there was a pale green envelope addressed to himself and Tsukai.

He had taken it back to his room before opening it, summoning Pueblo and Tsukai. Technically, the letter had nothing to do with Pueblo though.

Or so he thought...

F a t e
A pale mint green envelope is taken all the way across Gaia, across the seas, and onto the isolated island of Cetalu. Slighty beaten and crumpled up in the corners from such a long journey, across the front in a golden font is written:

Anakiro and Tuskai
Cetalu
Comunity Center

In the upper left corner was the return address of Fae. Inside the pale green envelope rests a small note. Just a simple letter really. It wrote:

Quote:
Dear Anakiro-

I deeply apologize for such short notice on behalf of watching over Pueblo. I hope it wasn't too much of an inconvience. She's just learning how to stand on two feet, and when I had to leave so quickly, I couldn't bring her into a whole new world with millons of new people and atmospheres. I can't thank you enough for taking her in without question.

Anyway, I am back home in Durem with my mother and father. My mother had taken on a severe disease and the doctors couldn't figure it out. I was beckond to come as urgent as I could for things I feared the most. Every day is random for my mother and I think I will stay at least another week to make sure she is alright.

Every moment though, I think of Pueblo. I really hope she is doing okay for you. Just give her some coloring books and crayons, or maybe show her something new, and I think she will be alright. Besides, she has Tuskai to play with, right? Tell Pueblo that her mother loves and misses her and will be home soon.

-Fae

Kiro smiled before glancing at Pueblo. "Bobo, it's a letter from your mommy. Should I read it out for you?"

The way the little girl's eyes lit up would have warmed the hearts of just about anyone. Grinning, Kiro reread the letter, aloud at this point. "So," he said when he was done. "Your mommy's gonna be back soon. Mommy's mommy is sick, and she had to go make her better again. Okay?"

"Mommy back so'n..." A tentative pause before she added, "...ne?"

Kiro couldn't help but surpress a smile. Oh Geez... she was picking things up from him... He chuckled gently in mild dispair, deciding not to correct her. Fae could scold him when she got back. He then nodded. "She said about a week. That's seven days..."

"Se'en...?"

Ahh... could she count yet? Grinning, Kiro grabbed a pad of paper. He wrote the numbers 1 to 7 in a red pen, and then handed them to Pueblo. "Okay, every morning when you wake up, cross one out okay? Then, when they're all gone, mommy will be almost home."

Gleefully, Pueblo reached out, her childish hands grabbing for the paper. She then sat down where she was, and started doodling happily around the numbers - drawing childish bees, flowers and clouds around the numbers, her face pulled to a grin at the thought of her mommy coming home when all the numbers were gone.

"No cheating now, Bobo. I'll know if you do."

"No chea'ing. Pu-blo not chea'!"

Kiro reached over to pat her head reassuringly. "Good girl."

The last few days have moved by quickly. Tsu and Pueblo keep doing what they do best - playing.

Tsu did have a funny incident (less than funny to him though, I'm sure) concerning loss of several feathers. It involved Pueblo not realising he was under her as she moved to sit down. Neither of them are hurt - they both got a fright, and Tsu lost a feather or three. They were among his larger feathers, still small though. I've decided to keep a hold of them - tied some string around them and pinned the string to the corner of the corkboard. Maybe they'll be useful when he's older?

At any rate, Pueblo's been eagerly counting down to when her mother comes home. I'm glad Fae's coming home (or she intended to when she wrote the letter). For one thing Pueblo misses her, and for another, when Fae gets home she'll feel secure enough that her mother's okay.

There's also another option, but I won't write it for fear of influencing fate.

Kiro glanced about himself as he finished his entry, his eyes falling on the feathers hanging on the corkboard. He noted that a lot of people seemed to need feathers when their gryphons became children. Maybe they could be of some use to them then?

Kiro smiled slightly, then closing the journal and rising to his feet, wondering what the two little terrors were up to.

Well, looks like I've managed to neglect the journal again... It takes a lot out of you, running around after two kids at once (and yes, Tsu's active enough to class as being babysat). Not much of a reason, but it's the only one I've got. Either that or I'm just getting forgetful!

Pueblo's still missing her mother - she's crossed off all the numbers on her piece of paper, and all I can say to her now is "soon". Which doesn't really help her much. But she's been very patient about it - and I'm glad. I don't know how I would deal with it if she got herself upset.

The summer festival was on a few days ago - we all went over the Ar'Idil (the other island) and met up with some of the newer guardians. It's a relief not to be the newest anymore - not that I minded it, just with there being newer guardians than me it makes me feel I have some... experience? I guess? Not sure if that's the right word... but it'll do for now.

Haven't heard from anyone back home in a while... Wonder how everyone's doing... I should probably write a few letters at some point soon...

Oh well, hopefully the next entry won't be as tardy as this one. I should probably go find out what the terrible two are up to. Everything's far to quiet for my liking...

A letter
Dear Anakiro,

Remember when you said I could have a copy of your journal entries? I would really like that if I could. Just feel free to swing by sometime, any time, this week. Pueblo would be very glad to see Tsukai again!

Expecting your visit,
Fae

p.s

If you've forgotton where my location is, I believe there is a new map in the Centre. And be sure not to come by on a full stomach!

Having recieved this note, Kiro had spent most of the pervious night going through his journal entries and copying them up for Fae. He had started off with good intentions, but then had simply forgotten he was keeping the journal for more than one person.

Finally, he laid the pen down, before then realising that he had another journal entry to write. This time one about the fact Pueblo had gone.

Journal
2005-07-19
Fae came to collect Pueblo a few days ago and I'm kinda sad to see her go. I always knew Fae was going to come back and collect her, that's not the point I'm trying to make. I just miss there being another person around I guess...

Oh well. I'm sure we'll get to see her a lot in any event.

Smiling slightly, Kiro finally laid down the pen, and found some string to tie up the little stack of papers before beckoning Tsu to come with him. "Shall we go see if they're home?"

"Peeeeeeep!!"

Kiro chuckled lightly as the Aerandir launched itself onto his shoulder. "Come on then, let's see if we can find them."

Y'know what I can never figure out about small animals? Any small animals? Where they get the idea hiding is a good thing...!

Kiro couldn't help but grin slightly as he wrote. He meant it in a good-natured way, Tsu had recently taken to playing hide-and-seek with Kiro. It wasn't exactly a big thing - the room was sparse enough that locating the gryphon didn't take an age.

Quote:
I just wonder what would happen if he decided to play hide and seek outside. That wouldn't be good at all. I don't think he understands that he's easy to lose sight of. That being said, he doesn't seem to show any inclination of running off when we're outside. More when we're inside, or he's playing with other gryphons.

Tsu also still enjoys being read to. We've almost finished the Brothers Grimm. Now, I'm not sure which part of the storytelling he actually enjoys. Is it just being spoken to? Or is he actually taking it in and understanding? The tone? I don't know, but he does seem to enjoy it, so I'll carry on.

Now, I need to go find him again. I'm counting the third time today!

Finishing the entry, Kiro laid the pen down and looked about. Now, there was a trick to this, he'd discovered. You waited and listened. If you were quiet enough, for long enough - Tsukai would give you a clue. A little peep, or a ruffle of feathers. And - as the neko-jin had predicted - a little muffled peep issued from the 'other room'. Lazily, Kiro got up to go locate his charge. He passed through the doorway and looked about, and was amazed to see not just one animal in the room, but two. A small white kitten was peering at Tsukai cautiously. Large green eyes peered past an abnormally fluffy tail as its attentioned moved from the winged-mouse to the neko-jin as Kiro curiously moved closer.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

"Tsu... what're you terrorising this time...?" reprimanded Kiro, his voice gentle as he then crouched down beside the pair. The kitten, in all honesty, looked more scared than Tsukai did - the mousey beak having seemed to have poked it several times in innocent curiousity. Absently, Kiro lowered his hand beside Tsukai, a taken gesture that Tsukai understood to mean Kiro wanted him up his shoulder. Tsu obeyed this, hopping in one fluttering movement from the ground to Kiro's shoulder and nestled there, continuing to watch the kitten with little black eyes.

Kiro's attention then moved to the kitten as he knelt down quietly beside it. He held out a hand, opening it for the kitten to sniff, and obviously this was a good move to make as the kitten proceeded to rub its cheek along the side of the neko-jin's hand, purring quietly. "How did you get here then...?" pondered Kiro rhetorically, slowly moving his hand to scratch the kitten under its chin, then moving to stroke its head gently. Tsukai peeped quietly, seeming to be giving his version of "yeah, how?"

Waving its immensely floofy tail from it's face, the little creature rose to its feet, tottering a few steps forward, then flopping down in front of Kiro and leaning against him gently, purring all the while. She - as Kiro got the instinct impression the kitten was a young lady - was evidently tired. And her fur was distinctly dirty, which meant she either hadn't been dirty all that long, or she was in fact too tired to do anything about it. Cats, as Kiro knew all too well, were freakishly obsessive about keeping clean... A dirty cat was, in fact, a paradox. Experimentally, Kiro shifted, scooping her up carefully. A surprised mew was the only protest as she allowed herself to be picked up, resting her chin in the crook of Kiro's elbow, and letting her tail swing downwards lazily.

Tsukai chose that moment to peep again, though it was a quiet sound. Kiro dipped his head to 'stroke' Tsu with a cheek, not having enough hands to hold the kitten and stroke Tsu at the same time. The Aerandir reciprocated the gesture, nuzzling Kiro with the top of his head.

"Maybe she swam here..." mused Kiro quietly as he moved through to 'his room'. "Or sneaked onto the ferry... Could be any number of things I guess..." As he spoke he moved to sit on the bed and put her down, watching her promptly curl her tail up to her nose again - seeming to drop off to sleep instantly. His hand now free, he stroked Tsukai's head with a finger. "I need you to do me a favour Tsu." A peep seemed to indicate Tsu was listening. "Be nice to her, okay? She'll stay with us until we can figure out what's happened - if someone's looking for her or anything."

Another, agreeable, peep. Tsu seemed to be okay with that idea. Kiro nodded and stood up, moving across to the journal again. He was privately quite pleased. It would be good for Tsu to have a playmate, if it turned out she was going to stay, and a little extra feline influence was never a bad thing.

Quote:
Just a quick note to add - I've just found out that we have an extra guest. Tsu's discovered a white kitten in the other room. She seemed tired, like she's come a long way, so I doubt she belongs to anyone else on the island. We'll keep an eye on her for a while, if she doesn't have anywhere to go back to, she's welcome to stay here. Tsu seems to like her, so I doubt that'll be a problem.

We can't really call her 'the kitten' forever - aside from the fact she'll probably not be a kitten forever, it doesn't sound very friendly... We'll call her Hope for the moment.

It's nice to have another cat around!

(...continued...)

Having ensured his newest charge was settled - Kiro had made a quick trip to the main Centre, looking for something to feed the little thing. He had returned with that and a letter he'd found addressed to himself. He waited until he was back in his room before opening it - Hope still fast asleep, and Tsukai peering over Kiro's shoulder as the neko-jin read the letter.

Anthony Blakewell
Dear Anakiro,

I was informed by Alyosha that you were avaliable for any research work which I may need you for. I have been looking over some things recently and realised that our records of Aerandir growth are sorrily lacking. I was wondering if you might assist me in finding a number of factors about each current Aerandir.

The variables I'd like noted per Aerandir are:
Animal types, Age, Height, Weight, Ears (external ears present or not), flying ability, apparent personality.

You may record and submit any other factors which you see as being of interest. I have arranged travel for you so that you may find this of not only the Aerandir of Cetalu but those on Ar' Idil too.

I have heard only good things of you and expect a high standard of work as a result. I expect the results to be with me as promtly as you are able to arrange and collate them.

Good luck in this task,

Anthony Blakewell.

Kiro reread the letter once or twice - making sure he understood the task he'd been given. Then, he started to grin. He was happiest when he was 'studying' something, and data collection was something he classed as studying.

So... he was going to have to talk to all the guardians, on both islands... He supposed the best way to start would be to pin up a notice on the board in the Centre. At least that way, the others would know he was looking for them. After he'd got Cetalu covered, he could island-hop. He picked up his notebook and took a page from it, writing his note on it.

Kiro sighed quietly as he tilted his head a little and watched Tsukai. The little Aerandir wasn't in the mood to be weighed or measured. He was in the mood to play and hop about - doing the exact opposite of what Kiro was asking him to do.

"Tsu... seriously... it would take you two seconds to sit on those scales... what's the problem here?" That it would be two seconds too long? Frowning in mild frustration, Kiro scooped Tsu up in his hands and dropped him onto the scales. Almost before he touched them the Aerandir had bounced off again and was fluttering away from the desk. "Geez, Tsu!" In dispair, Kiro watched Tsu flutter about the room, peeping proudly to himself. This was kind of like tag! Because soon the Kiro-shaped person would come after him and try to catch him again!

Kiro stopped for a long while, watching Tsu bounce and flutter through the air. There had to be a way to make this work - it was just evading him for the moment. He glanced down at Hope, who was watching the whole spectacle with a sort of disinterest. She wanted to see who would win out, but it amused her nonetheless. She swung her tail around majestically behind her, watching Kiro look away from her with a sigh. He was going to get no help from that quarter.

"Tsu, c'mon... two seconds, I promise...!"

"Peeeeep!!"

Kiro assumed a vague translation would equate to "nyah nyah!" Wonderful... Absently, the neko-jin glanced around the room. What did he have at his disposal...? Then, his expression became thoughtful as his gaze came to rest on the bag of seeds that had taken up permenant residence on his desk. Of course... bribery was bad, but encouragement was okay, right?

Tsukai's attention was suddenly captured as he saw Kiro move towards the seeds and untie the neck of the bag. Oh ho... what was this then? Seeds? This suddenly got interesting! Curiously, Tsu landed on the floor and flutter-hopped his way across the room, pausing to prod Kiro's ankle gently with his beak.

Kiro glanced down, grinning quietly. He held out a seed for Tsu to see and made a flicking motion with it. "Up on the desk it you want it kiddo..." He was rewarded with a peep of compliance and a flutter as Tsu hopped up onto the desk via Kiro's knee.

Kiro couldn't help but smile a little as he handed the seed over and stroked Tsu's head with a light finger. Mission accomplished...!

Alyosha sauntered down the corridor towards Kiro's rooms. He stopped, checked the small item he had in hand, knocked the door smartly and waited. It hadn't been that long since he had delivered the item before this.

It seemed plain, the object, almost battered but it was something close to his heart. He had chosen it personally from his own collection and de-nibbed and taken the old straggled feather from it. The cylinder glinted slightly. It might look quite plain but it was pure gold - certainly not common. It had been meant for display purposes but Alyosha felt that it was the right choice for this little Aerandir.

He waited.
