I have a PetCo, Dave's Pet Food City, James Tropical Fish, and Browns. My local PetCo and Dave's are nightmares. Dead fish everywhere, Ich running rampant, hole-in-the-head affecting almost every oscar and cichlid, major overcrowding, waaaaaaaay underfed, etc.. They don't care about the fish all that much and neglect to inform customers of... anything. James used to be a decent place, but as of late it's gone down hill. Luckily, Browns did the opposite. It used to be alright, but now it's great. The fish are all healthy and happy. ^_^

The store where I work gets customers from over four hours away who come specifically for our fish. When we get freshwater fish we quarantine them for three days and then they are up for sale, that is if nothing dies. When we get saltwater we're looking at more like a week and a half. Every tank has the ability to be shut off system independently and all salt water tanks have their own filtration networks. We're privately owned... we also sell small animals, reptiles and birds.
We can order anything upon request (as long as it is legal according to the state regulations) for customers, and we always take great pains to make sure that everything is going to an appropriate home.
We have a wholesaler nearby that has two systems - salt and fresh. If one thing is sick, everything is sick. They couldn't care less about their customers - you could walk up and ask for a lionfish and some discus and they wouldn't so much as ask you if you were putting them in separate tanks.
I walked in to a Petco recently in an attempt to find some cheap sweaters for my dog (for winter, not for decoration...) and I took a brief look at some tank plants. I ended up buying something and i had to teach their "fish guy" how to tie up a bag. I went back two weeks later, randomly, and he pulled me over. He asked me how to set up a 14 gallon planted tank. stressed
And this is their fish genius?!

Petco and this one local place are pretty good. So is That Fish Place. (Tucked inside or next to the main store That Pet Place, I don't remember which because I haven't been in years)
Wal-Mart and Petsmart are awful though. ;O;

Petsmart isn't really all that bad here. They give their fish zuchinni and orange slices and they seem to enjoy it. Their bettas are in bigger cups than I've seen them in other places, at least. Incredipet has some interesting fish but they put their bettas in contraptions that don't really even allow them to turn around. It would be like having a dog in your pet store and making it live in a small carrier until it was sold. As for the other ones, I haven't gotten to poke around in them much. There is a store called Just Fish that's supposed to be really good because the owner is a marine biologist or something. I haven't gotten around to going there yet but will sometime.
