The cafe worker flinched at such a sharp comment coming from such a soft looking girl. It was unexpected, and he hoped that his superiors didn't hear it; they would blame him for making customers unhappy. He gave her a withering smile and nodded, chattering conversationally to try and lighten the mood. "Well then, I've got a perfect little table for the two of you. Nice view, still warm. Let me know if you like it." He took two menus and stepped away from the podium. "This way."

Donny had been mildly surprised at Elena's reaction as well. He was in a good mood, so snappy remarks weren't his style for the moment. If this man had caught him in a bad mood, however, he was sure that Elena's brusque answer would seem like soothing comfort compared to what he would have said. He couldn't tell whether to be worried or amused, but he wasn't one to dwell on such things. There the thought went, as fast as it had come.

He followed the man towards the table, which faced a window but was near enough to a homey little fire they had stuck in their wall to keep them warm. It would suit him. He looked to Elena for approval. A quick glance towards the man made him notice that he was standing behind a chair, waiting to pull it out for Elena. As if! Donny nonchalantly slid beside him, and suddenly a menu popped out of the man's hand.

"How clumsy of me!" He cried out in confusion, and bent to pick it up. Donny took his spot behind the chair, and pulled it out for Elena, with a wide, innocent smile.

Elena's touchiness and sharp comment had originated in the desire to not waste the time she had with Donny. While she hadn't meant to cause the man distress, some inner coil unwound at the notion that she had, allowing her to relax and be the gracious and fair-handed princess she strove to be. Offering no apology as they walked, though, she hid a small smile behind a hand as she watched the clever ploy Donny employed to be the true gentleman. "My thanks," she said, touching his arm gently before sitting, instinctively guiding her skirt in maintenence of her dignity. "A well-chosen table," the girl remarked, bestowing a dazzling smile upon the host who had picked it out, peering about brightly as she waited for Donny to seat himself.

Donny smiled with pride at Elena's comment, as if it were he who chose the table. In his mind, it was his doing, somehow. He swiveled about and sat down quickly, picking the menu up as the host put it down in front of him.

The host gave Elena an embarrassed smile as he stood back up and saw her seated without his assistance. He just wasn't doing well today, but her smile reassured him. "Lovely. Well, we've got a limited menu right now since it's so late. Anything on the last two pages is being offered right now, as well as the first half of the first page, which is the munchies section. The lunch and dinner menus are closed though. We offer free refills on coffee and cocoa after 10, which is now. I'll send someone over to take your order. Please enjoy your evening." He gave the two a quick peace sign and a cheesy grin, before hopping back over to his podium to help someone else.

Donny looked over the menu. He was certain to get some cocoa, since his nose was still chilled and he could use something hot. But they were on a mission, and it would be difficult to find something of that nature, but he would try. He moved straight to the dessert section, and was pleasantly surprised.

"Would you look at that.. cotton candy ice cream." He giggled under his breath, and gave Elena a sweet smile. "We are triumphant~!"

Elena largely ignored the host's comments, concentrating instead on inspecting the menu. It was certainly varied enough to have cotton candy offerings, although she didn't see it as a flavor for hot chocolate. Too bad, that. Flipping back to the desserts as Donny discovered what they were looking for, Elena looked up and smiled back. "Cotton candy ice cream and hot chocolate," she said, closing the menu and setting it on the table. "What a wonderful day."

Donny could not help but agree. He nodded and put down the menu, looking up at the waiting waiter.

"You heard the lady!" He commanded. "Let us have cotton candy ice cream and hot chocolate!" He said this with a flourish of both voice and hand, which made the waiter roll his eyes. He wrote down a double order of the ice cream and hot chocolate.

"Will there be anything else this evening?" He asked.

"I think that's all." Donny gave Elena a quick look to make sure before nodding. The waiter took their menus and off he went to go fill the order. Donny reached out for what looked like little breadsticks in bags, which were in a basket on the table. He broke it open and inspected one of them, before flipping the breadstick through his fingers in a little trick his father had taught him.

"Ice cream and hot chocolate, they'll cancel each other out in our tummies." He smiled, and looked at the fire. He could feel the warmth from his seat, and it was nice. The flickering flames had a calming effect when he looked at them. "It's a pretty fire." He stated with a sigh.

Elena didn't comment on Donny' pronouncements, although she smiled a bit, somewhat smugly, at his grandiose gesture. "I certainly hope so," she murmured in reply, eyes bright and mischievous. "It would be too confusing otherwise." She was seated further away from the fire, and the girl was glad. Too much heat made her ill; a side effect of having a lower than normal body temperature.

"I suppose," Elena said noncommittally. It was pretty, but was certainly not among Elena's favorite things ever. For one thing, it reminded her too much of Anarya. On the other...Stala was also heavily fire based, and she and the Shattered girl got along quite well. Altogether, Elena was probably ambivalent about fire in general.

Then again, that sort of introspection likely wasn't what Donny had intended to prompt with his comment.

Perhaps Donny had been watching the fire a bit too long, because when he turned away the waiter was already heading towards them with a tray carrying two bowls of ice cream and two hot chocolates. He blinked in surprise, and gave one last glance to the fire. It was weird, as though he could have sworn he saw something in it. Fires flickered and played tricks on the imagination, though, he was sure that was all.

His eyes lit up when the pink ice cream was placed before him. It looked delicious! And so pretty, too. He couldn't help but poke it with his finger once the waiter had left them. "Wow, that's a pretty color." He murmured, pulling his finger away. The ice cream tendril stretched with him, and he held it up for a moment. Then, a strange thing happened. He stared with intent at the little tendril of dripping ice cream, and it stopped dripping. In fact, it hardened into something that looked like a little cone, it's tip pressed against Donny's finger. He laughed; it looked like he could do it with anything, not just sand.

He pulled away his finger and licked it, giving Elena a mischievous smile.

"Wanna see something funny?"

Obviously, neither Tale had thought about something most people would consider obvious - how were they going to pay for this all?

"If you like pink," Elena replied indifferently to Donny's assertion. Pink was all well and good for some, but Elena preferred darker colors, and if it had to be pastel, blue or purple only. She had been in the middle of taking a bite of ice cream when she noticed that her companion's ice cream had frozen on his finger. With narrowed eyes, she watched him carefully, seeing if perhaps he had similar tattoos on his arms. When nothing out of the ordinary (for Donny) started glowing, she relaxed, in time to turn an ingenious smile back towards him.

"Of course!" this reply was a bit more enthusiastic than the first; anything that was a demonstration of power was good. It was important to know this things. You never knew when knowledge of weaknesses and strengths was going to come in handy, and Elena was the sort to seek out that sort of information.

Ah, but Donny had thought about it - after all, he spent most of his time alone nowadays. He always had enough money for treats stashed away when he went wandering. It wasn't much, but it was certainly enough for their expenditures.

Donny picked up his spoon and took a big scoop of ice cream to his mouth. He sucked on the spoon greedily, and as his immediate need was satiated, he rose his free hand over the bowl. His palm was faced downward towards the ice cream, and a look of rare concentration crossed his face.

The ice cream bubbled unnaturally, and where a bubble popped, a cone of pink would rise up from it as if it had been hidden underneath all this time. Mountains, cliffs, all sorts of tiny versions of landscape emerged. In the middle of the island of ice cream, even a tiny castle began to materialize. The color of the ice cream made the castle look quite feminine, but so miniscule in nature that it didn't matter.

When all was said and done, the island of ice cream floated detached from the rest in the bowl, and rotated very slowly. It was a little model island paradise, made out of ice cream. Silly, and pointless, but somehow important nonetheless; at least to it's creator.

"I can do it with anything." Donny murmured, after taking the spoon out of his mouth. "One day I'm going to make a place all my own. A real place." He took the spoon and scooped up most of the castle; the rest of the illusion disintegrated into ice cream once more and plopped into the bowl. He ate the spoonful and laughed. "Not out of ice cream."

Not that living in a world made of ice cream was such a horrible idea, he mused to himself. Mmm, yummy.

He heard a soft bump and looked up; at the window of the cafe stood Frey, nudging against it with his muzzle. Donny looked past the pegasi to the night sky, and made a face.

"Someone is reminding me that it's getting late." He sighed in resignation. "Time to finish this ice cream!" And with that he dug in heartily.

Elena watched Donny create a small island out of nothing more than ice cream, and was surprised at the surge of jealousy that ran through her as he demonstrated. All she could do was make things colder, and a few ice pellets sometimes. That hardly seemed fair, to her. But, life was rarely fair, and this ability of Donny's was oh so very useful. "So delicate," she marveled, praising his construction. When it dropped back down, Elena looked momentarily wistful and couldn't quite place why.

"I hadn't noticed how late it was! It doesn't seem like we were out that long," Elena replied, a little surprised. Indeed, she'd hardly noticed the passing of time while they'd been talking, or flying. Following suit, she dug in, hardly worried about eating the ice cream too fast and getting a headache. Cold hardly bothered her at all, a useful trait in these circumstances.

The ice cream was incredibly enjoyable, and Donny made sure to appreciate every huge mouthful before taking another. When they were done, a check was left, and Donny shoved his hand in the little pocket of his toga pants. He pulled out enough money to pay for it with a modest tip, and hopped off his seat. He held out his hand for his friend and grinned. He would help her off her seat, and lead her out, wrapping one of his wings around her as they walked out. Though Elena wasn't affected much by the cold, it was gentlemanly to give a lady your coat - or in this case, your wing.
