Well, because i don't know where to get a teacher, i've pretty much taught myself.... but i had a teacher for my clarinet, and i didn't really like it, even though she helped out a lot, i think i could have learned that on my own, too sweatdrop ....

I teach myself. I love learning instruments all by myself. More fun and it's easier to deal with because you can connect with the instrument (like bonding XD sounds weird) and find out things about yourself. Whether you learn easily (like me) or it takes a while for you to get it right. Later on when I've mastered electric guitar, I want to try out bass. I'm working on shredding right now, pretty tough but I'm getting pretty good.

James Tanner
I'm self taught, and I've become better faster than my friends who took lessons, so i think teaching yourself is good, but i think having some lessons to get rid of some bad habits would be good too.

I definitely agree, i am self thaught for around 2 years and this year im paying for jazz lessons, teacher thought me some things that i would not have figured out on my own, and yes they definitely get rid of your bad habbits, like me im used to playing with my right shoulder elevated, but now he is training me to get rid of that, also you can ask them advice.

I took lessons for a few weeks before my instructor went off to college, and I trained myself ever since. It has been quite hard, but rewarding. I believe it should be a mix of both , because there are many thngs I would like to do but am unable to figure out. I cannot read music, at least not well, and would love to be able to do that, as well as finger tapping. I do not really know very many chords, at least i don't know the names of them. I picked some up from playing differant bands. I don't know what their called, though, heh.

Perfect example, For the year of playing the guitar, I never knew you shouldn't elevate your right shoulder until I read the post of this one. Thank you, Shredder.

I would like to incorporate both self teaching, as well as some lessons. You'll be able to do things your own way, and try new stuff, while getting tips, and having someone who can help you understand the things that are tough.

I like teaching myself because you don't have to wait for a teacher to show you stuff and it's free.

I had a teacher but he got really mad when you done stuff wrong so I start eaching myself and now, 2 years later, He's laughable terrible.

I taught myself, however I would like to take a few lessons to see if I am doing anything wrong. What I think would be best is taking lessons in the beginning to learn the basics, then going off on your own to develop your own style. I don't think I would change what ive done though. Been playing for around three years, and I like to think I have progressed fairly well just teaching myself, although there are times when it just doesn't seem like i have the time to play.

I taught myself, I still am. I had some lessons with my acoustic in the beggining, but now I am not. I will be getting lessons though.

I did both. I taught myself the basics pretty much, glancing at my little brother's un-opened videos and getting a tab book, then my parents got me a teacher when they were tired of my not-so-good version of "Sweet Child of Mine"

Was self taught for two years then took 3 years of lessons. Been playing for 7-8 years now total... Still learning.

Never got the people who don't take lessons or learn music theory because "They get to be free". There's a lot of things you can learn incorrectly or do inefficiently if left to your own devices. Then to unlearn those bad habits when you start getting better is a pain in the a**. How is that being free? Some people make some amazing strides while being self taught. However, on the average, i found the best results being from people who took at least some lessons. Your mileage may vary though.

I took lessons for about a year, but I didn't like it at all. It cost too much and she was trying to make me play classical only (I'm talking Beethoven-esque songs) when I wanted to do a bit more of a rock influence. Now I'm reteaching myself and it's going great.

I took lessons for 7 years, and now I'm going to college for guitar. Some of the best players taught themselves, but I think if you have a chance to take lessons, you should. (Plus I give guitar lessons, and I still want a Job!) xd

I'm doing both actually. I'm taking lesson to work on alternative picking, and I'm teaching myself rock songs on the side. It works really well.

I'm teaching myself. It's better for me because I can learn at my own pace, and play the way that is comfortable for me and develop my own style rather than doing it the way a teacher does. Plus I don't have to pay.
