Anyway, I'm especially curious about how Jeep got involved there. He seems at odds with the guys, from what happened in the anime. Irony perhaps?

Perhaps, and of course Goku was cuter he was younger! He was really still a kid at the time. And I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason why Jeep got involved... I just don't know yet.
