The creators have even been interviewed about this in like Animerica and Newtype... apparently, it was just a thing. Heero is Japanese, that's it. And they don't know why he has blue eyes. They just wanted to make him bishounen or something. *shrugs*

Poor Heero. Everyone's always picking on him for how he looks. *chuckle*

That's what I thought. cool

Of course, that doesn't mean we can't write crazy fan fiction about it, speculating about his true origins and parents and all that fun stuff. *grin*

I believe that Heero has some Caucasian in him. His whole identity is pretty much false so it would make sense.

Unfortunately, the official American GW website doesn't quite seem to be working right now. In that event, I'm gonna have to resort to way-backing a classic source.

http://web.archive.org/web/20010617165701/www.gundamproject.com/world/ac_timeline.html

Specifically, the entries for AC 147 and 149.

Ah a person that actually gives links to info! You so rock! So many times I just get a "screw you just believe me!" for a reply. Thank you!

Remember, this is anime. The place where someone like Sailor Moon, with blonde hair and blue eyes, is pure-blooded Japanese. Granted, they do that because if they were true to life, 90% of all the characters in anime would look similar and boring, but it's still a point.

As for Heero, he doesn't look too bad off. The eyes are the only thing. Perhaps he's only part Japanese? I mean, Quatre doesn't look Arabic, but we've gone through several possible explanations (mother of European descent, Berber heritage) for him.

~I agree. If the characters are drawn true to life, it could be hard differentiate each character.
~I also think (now this is my personal opinion and outlook, I could be wrong) that the japanese (not all, but most) are interested in the American culture, because it is made of so many different people of different ethnic backgrounds, it makes it kind of colorful if you know what I mean. So I think they use that in their animation. But I also can see that they want to be expressive and beyond normal. You can definately see that in a section/district in Tokyo (I believe) called Harajuku, where mostly everyone is in elaporate costumes or cosplaying.
~So I can believe Heero could be japanese, even if it's partially or not.

Quatre's appearance was also explained in a similar article... possibly even the same one... along with his name.

"Raberba" and "Winner" are Berber names, and his style of dress, as well as the style of the Maguanacs dress, indicates Berber ties. Berber heritage among Arabic people causes some to appear Caucasion or European despite being Arabic. Quatre is confirmed among the creators as being Berber in heritage, and that his name comes from that line as well.

Believe it or not, the character designers did do some research as far as non-Japanese characters. Granted... no Chinese person in their right mind would use a number when naming their child, so Wufei's name is actually an extremely BAD Chinese name (I'll have to find the website that I found that on for you). However, they did do SOME research. *chuckle*

As for poor Heero... well, he's just an oddity. wink

Actually, I asked my high school Chinese teacher about it, and he said that "Zhang" and "Wu Fei" are very common Chinese names, essentially the Chinese version of "John Smith". However, he said that they would never use the Pinyin characters that Sunrise used, which come out in English as something like "five sheets flying".

...And every time I hear that, I can't help but think of the phrase "four sheets to the wind". XD

Sometimes... with Wufei, I had to wonder. sweatdrop He drove me nuts at some points. I think that, if I had been Sally when they were rebelling in China, I would have just smacked some sense into the kid.

Notice in Inuyasha that all of the human characters all have black hair and brown eyes. Boring, no? Now look at Sailor Moon, where the characters are all bright and completely un-Asian looking. And a lot more interesting. 'Course Wufei looks very Chinese...
That's injustice! scream rofl

...Maybe Heero wears contacts? And dyes his hair brown? Maybe Duo implanted some of his DNA into him when Heero wasn't looking?

You know... I've always wondered stuff like that...

Like, if you implant DNA into a person after they're done growing, would it effect them? Or would it only show up in their children?

random....

As far as Heero 'going undercover', I wouldn't really put it past him, but I doubt he'd stick to the same look for so long. 3nodding

Good question. Never thought about that before. He doesn't look it, but it's possible.

you have a good point.
you must remember that if you are Japanese
that just means that is your nationality, not your ethnicity
or race.

Also, what is the chance that every asian
person you see is tall and skinny?

This is true. A teacher I had in high school went over that with us.
