Neko girl Manda
Because both Illiana and Luna have hubbies deploying in the next couple of months, I thought it might be a good idea to bring this thread back up to the first page.

Good call. I hope they both get to come back to their homes soon. We'll be here for both of y'all! 3nodding

Thanks ladies. It does help to know that there are other Gaians who know what this is like. Just a warning, for the next year I'll probably be grumpy, dark, and prone to complaining and highly sarcastic remarks...Oh, wait...I already am that way. xd

We are. We spent the better part of last night rearranging the living room, just because. It turned out pretty cool and we laughed the entire time. The only bad thing was that we were up until 4am working on it. And Izzy, ever the sweetie, let me sleep in even though he has to work tonight.

Nice Dev Manda.

My fiance *was* in the Army. He was a green beret. His unit was the "nothing-left-to-live-for" unit. There was a 6 month life expectancy. He was there for three years. I'm so lucky he's still alive. I can't say he came home whole though. He was stabbed in the back. Poor thing. He also got some helicopter schrapnel through the hand.

Now he's a security gaurd for multi-million-dollar homes. Well, for now. He's finishing college and then he'll go into a REALLY dangerous field...

That's right. My honey wants to be a history teacher.

GrimRules: I'll have to share that poem with my fiance. He was airborne for a good 8 years. He says the first jump is terrifying, but after the first hundred it gets easier! xp

I'd just like to say to all the women with lovers/boyfriends/husbands/etc. overseas, I admire your strength.

My fiance and I don't live together, and since he works swing and I have to get up at 5 every morning we barely even talk except on weekends. The other night I was actually awake when he got up, so I got to talk to him. Unfortunately it was for a very short time because we were both working really hard just to stay awake. That night, as I was saying goodnight, I couldn't avoid the thought of how depressing it is to have to say goodnight to a telephone. And then I realized how lucky I am to be able to see him at least some of the time, when other women don't see their men for months at a time.

Wives with men overseas, I salute you.

I'm getting more nervous knowing that there's not much time left till Tommy is getting deployed. We've yet to get a set date, just a two week approx. period. Argh! And Tommy's been having to do a lot of stupid stuff in preparation. Although we do know for certain which part of Iraq that he is going to, I know Manda's husband was in the same area when he was deployed.

I think Tommy's family is taking it hard, but who can blame them. I wonder sometimes if Tommy is just acting nonchalant to make everyone else feel better about it all.

Just got this in an e-mail, decided this was the thread to put it in.

Happy christmas, all.

T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE, MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY, WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO, IN THIS HOME, DID LIVE.
I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE.
NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES, OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT, CAME THROUGH MY MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR, IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED, AN AUSTRALIAN SOLDIER.
WAS THIS THE HERO, OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALIZED THE FAMILIES, THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS,
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.
SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE, A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM, EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.
I COULDN'T HELP WONDER, HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE, IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT, A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES, AND STARTED TO CRY.
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED, AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS."
THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP.
I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL,
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED, FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.
I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE, ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR, SO WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."

This poem was written by an Australian Peacekeeping soldier stationed
overseas. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable . .

PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favour of sending this to as many people
as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our all
of the service men and women for our being able to celebrate these
festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe.
Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who
sacrificed themselves for us. [/e-mail]
