According to Outpost Gallifrey the earlier rumor reported by The Sun will be officially confirmed by the BBC soon:
Freema Agyeman will be playing the Doctor's new companion in season 3 (not the Christmas special). She will be playing 'Martha Jones', an entirely different character from the girl who died in Army of Ghosts last Saturday...

I was rather hoping for Martha Stewart myself. She'd at least fix the TARDIS up with some nice furniture and a chandelier.
The official BBC announcement is up! They've got some pictures of Tennant (not in Doctor garb) and the new companion even.
Question: If they knew she was going to play the companion, why did they put her in as a different character on the second last episode? Surely someone else could have played that role.
I mean I know they used to do that in the classic series... but it just seems odd in the new series.
Scratch that last question... I just read the bit about them being impressed by her acting on that episode... Hmm...

It makes sense to me...they liked her, so why not use her some more? I've heard that there are some fans that are really upset by the idea of using an actress again and that it will be confusing, but I think that's all silly talk. I mean, the average viewer probably won't even remember her that well, and us obsessives should just be happy they found someone talented to do the job! biggrin

Her acting consisted of typing... flirting with some guy... screaming... more typing... more typing... and then dying. Not much to go on, really.
But she seems nice enough. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Personally, I think they're both absolutely gorgeous and that it's nice that it should be a good change, however, since they both look entirely different. I mean, when Ten had his little crush on Mme de Pompadour, she was also stereotypically blonde and pretty. xp Okay...not sure what my point is, just musing! whee

Perhaps instead of focusing on the girls boobs we should be considering the character possibilities.
I for one would like to see Martha Jones coming from another Time Period than contemporary Earth. Perhaps a historical companion? After all the last one to come from the past was Jamie back in the Troughton days. It's about time we had another.

Haha, yes Tennant does like the blonde babes. I didn't like Mme de Pompadour herself, but I don't mind Sophie Myles so much (she was good in "Tristan and Isolde").

I don't mind her. She looks fine and her voice doesn't annoy me. However, I really wish that they'd bring two or three companions in at once. PROPER companions - not tag-along boyfriends or two/three episode companions. Preferably all from different places/planets i.e. not all from a London estate. More like the Ian/Barbara/Susan thing or even Nyssa/Tegan/Adric (only with an older companion or two).
Also - how the heck does the Doctor recover from losing Rose?
