Passion_Dragon Lupin The Great Passion_Dragon Revolutionary01 Is that your new catch phrase? rofl To the folks arguing about ghettos: The dictionary definition of a "ghetto" is a place in a town where minorities are held or forced to live, or something to that tune. But the title asks, "What IS 'ghetto.'" This implies that they are wanting someone to put into words the idea of a person being or acting in a "ghetto" fashion. You can debate back and forth forever on what the dictionary says and what unfortunately happened to some Jewish people during WW2. But, I think most of you realize that just because someone asks for a definition, you shouldn't automatically run to Merriam-Webster. biggrin If I asked you to define a person who acts "cool," would you honestly argue about body temperature?? xd It's a figure of speech, just like saying someone "acts ghetto." Lupin kind of seems to be on the right track, but you don't have to be low-income to act ghetto, and who the hell told you Dickies was an urban brand of clothing?? That's like saying Timberland boots are ghetto. xd And if ghetto-acting people started to rock Dockers, you'd be calling that an urban brand too?? lol And some of the rest of the crap you mentioned is just silly. rofl If you want to know why I think so, just ask and I'll spell it out for you. But I digress. Look at some rappers. They are hardly low-income, but it is their habits or actions that make the rest of us call them ghetto--the loud talking for no good reason, buying expensive material things without having the necessities, etc. You can also say that ghetto means being low-class or behaving like one has had a poor upbringing, not because one doesn't know better, but on purpose. I hardly think most of this is crap. stare That's because you don't know what I know. I know what acting ghetto is. You just threw together a bunch of stereotypes that don't necessarily add up to "being ghetto." Nappy hair?? Uses public transportation? Eats fast food throughout most of their lives? Do you honestly know how mean and stereotypical that sounds? Some people have nappy hair. Some people take public transportation. I don't think I need to go on and on (again). You've got a very narrow view of the world. : Lupin The Great Passion_Dragon Lupin The Great A ghetto is not where people are "held" no one is forcing you to live there. And only the weak minded minorities are being "held" there out stupidity or just a ******-minded mentality of entitlement (The idea that all blacks are entitled to government reparations and/or benefits.) which only continues the stereotype from others here and in other parts of the world tat we just sit on our asses and b***h and complain for anything. No one may be standing at the entrance with a rifle, barking out threats, hun. You call these people who stay in the "ghettos" weak-minded, stupid and "******-minded." Are they really? Are they stupid, weak and "******-minded" for choosing to stay where they and their families have a roof over their heads rather than being homeless?? For staying where they can afford not only that "roof," but also, food and clothes?? If you are poor and move into low-income housing, it CAN be like a "trap." Because low-income housing developments base your RENT on your INCOME. The higher your income, the higher your rent. The way it's supposed to work is that once you make more money, you can "afford" that higher rent and move to a place with normal prices. But, as we all "should" know--the more money you make, the more money you need to live on. So, if you know you can't afford higher rent, why get a better job? Or for some, any job at all? ( rolleyes ) There you have it: "forced" to stay in low-income housing due to economic restraints. BUT...some people do get out. They move on. They rise up. They get a computer and an account with Gaia online just so they can tell the world about their experiences.[/cornyspeech] God must you all of my lectures. gonk What are you trying to say here...? :/ "Narrow minded"???? Most of the stuff I mention was from my city and from my views as are yours. We're basically just showing are own sides of this topic, some of the stereotypes I mention are for the most part pretty hurtful but true. Some of it is indeed a false aspect of "ghetto life" and the definition behind it, but if you want to just flame me for saying a moderation of truth then please finish taking your shots ma'am .

I don't know how else to get you to think outside the box than to let you know a different way to look at things. Everyone has their own ideas about things. But the more people who know that "public transportation-using, fast food-eating" people are NOT what ghetto really is, the BETTER. Yeah? Also, your stereotypes, "for the most part," are just stereotypes, not truths. :/ It's not "my way or the highway," but I'm not going to sit here and allow what I see as "crap" to be spewed without arguing my own point. Don't take it personally. This is not an "attack" on YOU. It's what you're saying that I don't agree with.

A white person my call a black person ghetto but that is only because they don't understand where they come from, don't get me wrong not all white ppl are like that but some are.

rofl rofl rofl Lupin The Great....what can I say? I don't know you well enough to say you're not a narrow-minded b*****d who doesn't know what he's talking about...but if I agree with you that you are a narrow-minded b*****d who doesn't know what he's talking about, you'll get upset and Ronin will zap my mod powers and, well...it just wouldn't be a good evening. xd
So, rather than replying (in more detail) to the narrow-minded-b*****d comment, I'm going to leave that one alone and direct you instead to my previous posts on this topic. Contrary to what must be popular belief rolleyes , I'm not out to get you and I don't like drama. I've already given my statement on the topic, so you can read what I've already posted. 3nodding Also, BlackDiamond has offered some, eh...interesting definitions of his own that might give you an idea of what ghetto is. Personally, I think the first three are right on, even though he says he was just kidding. xd

By the way, BlackDiamond, while I agree that the term ghetto may be used by some narrow-minded people to describe any black person, regardless whether they portray ghetto behavior or not...I don't think that all of the people who call other people ghetto are wrong for it--some people deserve to be called ghetto because they really do act that way. But not everyone who lives in low income housing or eats fast food should be called ghetto. Just like not everyone deserves to be called "cool" or "hot." Just like "ghetto," I consider these to be "popular terms," which means their definition would be based on widely accepted opinions. (Just like pop music is music that is widely accepted by or has been popularized by the general public.)
Someone let me know if there is a word meaning "popular terms." Colloquialisms, perhaps...?

I don’t under stand your question. Are you saying what is "being ghetto" or "what is a ghetto"?
The act being ghetto is to act like where you’re from. Which most the time ends being a bad thing i.e. meaning acting like a straight up ***** in public. (I hate to use that word but it’s the truth.)
Now the word ghetto in general derives from those old German holding camps. But "we" have taken it and said its represent the low budget housing and or just our plane old neighbor hoods.
