oh...mellophone's not that bad...and you get these awesome runs in the mello music that you don't get in horn parts...yeah it's the third heaviest instrument in marching band...tuba, baritone, then melo...but it's still fun. and everybody comes up to you and asks you what the heck you play....the only better name is a flugelhorn...

fuzzdomestic I play te horn and I love it. I'm not sure if I really want to do marching band in highschool if I'm going to have to play mellophone. One of the girls in my pointe class plays one, and she says it's the most annoying instrament she's ever heard. I'm technically the section leader right now, but competion's all of one other girl. It's not like it really matters anyway, for the moment it just means I have my pick of top or bottom line on split peices. I wish I could play something that roughly resembles melody. I'm stuck with harmony most of the time, which means I get to play the downbeat on marches. Woo... You should play mello!! I love it =) For the most part, plus you get to hang around the guys.. you make good friends with them (which is good in the long run). And the mellos usually have AWESOME music! Or at least we do.

Do you have different fingerings on a mellophone?

Yeah, you use trumpet fingerings. But it isn't hard to learn them, I mean a few practices and they become second nature.

I heart french horn and mellophone. Our section is teeny weeny itsy bitsy; I'm one of 6 concert band horns (There's 4 in the Wind Symphony (advanced/varsity/whatever band) and 2 in the Concert (freshman/beginner) band, leaving none for the Symphonic (intermediate) band, >_> ) and one of 3 marching mellophones. Sadly, I'm not section leader in the marching band- we're such a small section, we've been combined with the trumpets to make the "high brass" section. Both of the section leaders from high brass are trumpets, so mellophones are left unrepresented, yo. Any other marching bands out there have this high brass thing goin' on? gonk

We have seven mellophones at my school, four in symphonic (highest), and two in Concert (mid). I play bassoon in symphonic, so I'm not counted... and everyone must play in both Symphonic/Concert and Marching.. no buts. We will have a lot more Mello players in two years though. =)

Yeah, school's been closed for us, too. But Mellos rule! Our mellophone section is way tiny, only two of us in it. Though our band is pretty small, too. And I'm about fed up with this easy cheesy music we have to play. One of the best parts of being a mello is the awesome music parts you get. And our motto is : The power of 2... Rock on, Mellos!

We have 280 people in our band =) Compared to the schools we play, that is like really big... Our music seemed difficult in the begining, but it is becoming easier..

We never do stuff like that. I miss my section too... we just got our house boarded up for Ivan and I feel like I'm out of civilization, but then i walk outside and am like woah. Yeah, lets just hope the winds slow down before it hits. I don't want my house to colapse (sp?)
