Doc looked blankly at the woman sitting in the lobby. Were those... cat ears? Attached to her head? Interesting. He'd have to look into that. Maybe there was an evolutionary advantage to them. Or else they were just cool. Doc didn't know cool - he had terrible trouble trying to keep up with all the fads. That was more Sophie's forte'.

"Are you Tamago?" he asked cautiously. "I'm Doctor Albert Brune, head of the Kybernetika AI research project."

"Nigiri, Tamago Nigiri." She greeted with a broad smile on her face. "Tama for short~" She jumped to her feet, "So I'm guessing you're the one who called me yesterday?" She cocked her head to in question. Her ears repositioned themselves so they were facing forwards, her tail swaying behind her. "Well now, you look very...professional now don't you~"

Doc paused for a moment before remembering his hat. "Oh, this thing? It's kind of a theme piece. My niece, Sophie - you'll meet her and her Kybernetik, too, probably - is making me wear it until this pirate event ends." He shuffled throught the folder, verifying the name and appearance, and nodded. "I am the one who called you yesterday. It's about the chip you won from us."

He opened the folder again and pulled the chip out, picking a sky blue feather off. "I'll hold onto the feather until you need it," he states, holding the chip out towards Tama. "It will grow into a child and then beyond that as part of our research program on advanced AIs, and... I feel I should tell you that this chip is rather special. She's based in both personality and appearance on Elizabeth Swann, from some franchise of movie's Sophie is rather enamoured with. Do you have any questions so far?"

"Just one.." She said, fiddling the chip in her hand. "How in the world does a chip grow into a CHILD?" Eyeing the chip in her hand, she sniffed it, but quickly backed away.

"Oh yeah, that thing I entered a month back. So this in the chip thing that the winner got from it." Her tail drooped a tad before she asked spoke again, "So..she's based off a movie character eh...sweeeet~" A mischievious grin was now plastered on the cat's face.

Doc worried a little about the expression, but chose to answer the question instead of worrying about the knot of apprehension in his throat. "In about a week, you will return to the lab. I will insert the chip into the first of a series of bodies that the AI will grow through, with the ultimate goal being full human conciousness. Usually that's reached in the first week of the young child stage, but I choose to continue through to adult to see what they do with free will and emotions. Can life be simulated?"

He paused to take a breath and continued, "I hope to someday perfect my nanotech to the point that bodies after the first one are not necessary. They will simply... grow. Anything else?"

Tama placed a finger on her chin in deep though before answering, "Nope, I that about answers all questions I can come up with."

"Perfect nanotech eh..Mreow~ That'll be some day."

"Oh, it will be sooner than you think," replied Doc. "Within that little chip's life, even." After consulting the the folder a last time, he nodded to Tama. "I'll see you in a week," he stated and strode back into his office.

The day was clear enough, the weather seemed to be cooperating, and best of all, so was her child. Ronnie held Gage's hand in her own as they entered the labratory. She'd decided to bring her little boy with her to pick up her next child-to-be.

This one may even turn out to be stranger than her two fae children, and to face facts, they were rather odd. Still, she'd love her next child as much she did her current children.

Smiling, she called out cheerfully, "Hello? Doctor Albert?"

Doc's ears pricked up at the sound of his name. He gave the new file on his desk a final glance-over before closing it, tucking it under his arm, and striding out into the lobby. It was empty save a currently unoccupied receptionist desk (Where was Sophie? She was neglecting her responsibilities around the lab again), the woman, and her odd-looking dark-skinned charge.

Doc looked down at the file in his hand.

Sparrow, child of Veronica Orcot, it read.

"Yes, that would be me," he stated. "Are you Veronica?"

He tucked the file back under his arm and strode over, offering his hand.

Ronnie smiled as she removed her hand from Gage's and extended it to meet the Doc's. "Yes, my name is Veronica, but please call me Ronnie. Oh, and this is my son Gage."

The young boy bowed his head solemnly, "It is nice to meet you."

Ronnie beamed down at him with near hearts in her eyes. Snapping out of it, she turned back to the Doctor, "I'm supposed to meet you to pick up my kybernetik right?"

Doc nodded. "You are," he said, looking down into the folder. Yes, he had the information for the rest of the family as well. "You have two children as of now?" he verified, and without waiting for an answer, continued, "You are aware that a kybernetik child has certain aspects that you are unused to. For example," He flips through the folder and draws something out in his closed hand. He extends it towards Veronica, metal glinting between his fingers.

He flips it over to reveal a squarish computer chip.

"They begin life as chips. Any more questions?"

Ronnie took a moment to examine the chip in his hand. Well... stranger things had happened. Children bursting out of jars and what not. Still... a microchip?

Grinning, and taking it as it came, she reached out and picked up the chip delicately. She seemed to think that breaking it would be a very bad thing. "Questions?" She pondered to herself, "Well, how often should I bring it... er... he... she in?"

"Oh, stop by whenever you like, though I'll be calling if I need you to come by for an appointment. Like, a week from now, I'll see you back here and hopefully he'll be ready for a body. The chip stage is like an infant in the womb. He's configuring his programming and observing the world in preparation for his big debut."

Doc glances at her to make sure she is still following.

"Right now he hasn't got any physical needs, but pay attention to him, take care of him, don't let something chew him up, don't play ping-pong with him..." Doc shrugged, trying to think of anything else to say. "He will have distinct physical needs once he grows, though. Should I go into them?"
PostPosted: Sat Aug 19, 2006 5:27 pm

Ping-pong?! Keeping her face as politely schooled as possible, Ronnie nodded along with him. This would certainly be an interesting child. Something she hadn't done before that was for sure.

Still, she gently examined the chip a bit closer, it was growing and learning... inside the chip... a mystery. It didn't help that Ronnie was not what people would call techno smart.

"Yes, please, I'd like to be able to prepare for him as much as I can."

"Well, for starters, he has special dietary needs," began Doc. "I've engineered them to metabolize sugars, but protein and fats do nothing for them. Because of the way they derive energy, he needs to sleep at least an hour in every 24 hour period, preferably longer. When he's awake, he can metabolize small amounts, but meals need to be regular. No more than 12 hours without eating. Chocolate, grains, and fruits are good for him, meat, poultry, and fish isn't."

He paused to let it sink in.

"The drawback of the energy system is that if the glucose levels and energy levels ever drop too low, they can be somewhat ... diabetic. In other words, all his systems except the ones dedicated to memory and personality preservation will shut down until someone gets some sugar into his system. As he grows, he'll learn to take care of the need himself, but you'll need to make sure he eats for a while. Is that clear?"
