The Long Distance Runner

PostPosted: Thu Jun 01, 2006 3:17 pm

Gabriel walked into the almost-deserted bar from the bitter cold outside, loosening his coat as the warmth of the place surrounded him. He unwrapped the scarf from around his mouth, and gratefully breathed in the tepid, pleasant air of his new surroundings.

Retiring silently to a table in a corner, he pulled out a small book, its pages yellowed and dog-eared, and thumbed through its reams of scrawled text, filling every space possible on each page. Reaching an empty page, he pulled out a fine, golden-nibbed fountain pen and began to write furiously, lost in his own musings.

Rosiel pokes his head up from under the counter. He notices the man walk into his former bar, and raises a brow. The man seemed to be very absorbed in his book. He wrote with a speed that gave him a seemingly mad appearence. He waits for a while for the man to do something, but the man simply keeps writing in his book.

"Excuse me, sir. People usually come into a bar to drink. Considering the library's on the opposite side of the street, and you don't look like you're paying much attention to where you're going currently, you might be in the wrong place. If not, can I get you something to drink? My brother's probably still asleep, the little slacker."

Gabriel whipped his head up as if suddenly roused from sleep, and looked around to see the angelic young man standing over him. Laying his book down and blushing slightly, he said softly, "Forgive me...I only intended to write one or two lines, but the Muse will have it's way..."

Raven flicked back his long, black hair over his ears, showing off his sharp cheekbones and blue eyes. Hardly moving his mouth as he spoke, he asked, "Could I please have a bottle of vodka and two shot glasses?"

Rosie lraises the one brow even further.

"You want an entire bottle of my precious Vodka.. and two shot glasses? Why do you need two shot glasses, if I may ask. And what brand of Vodka would you like? I highly suggest the Grey Goose, myself. It's French-made, but it's some good stuff."

While waiting for an answer, he knelt under the counter and produced two small shot glasses, and a small plate of sliced limes and lemons.

Gabriel smiled at his enquiry, a question he was used to. Pulling out two plastic cases, each filled with different-coloured pills, he said, "Spoonful of sugar...?" with a hint of bitterness to his hushed tone of voice.

Opening each case and counting out five pills from each, in ten different colours, Gabriel withdrew his hand into his pocket and placed a small pile of gold coins on the table before him. "Whatever the maestro suggests...it's not like money is something I worry about."

Rosiel blinks, looks faintly confused at the remark, and simply produces a bottle of the Grey Goose Vodka.

"You're money's no good here, save it for something else. I stock up while my brother mainly runs the bar, and drinks are on the house. If you don't like the Grey Goose, tell me, and I'll let you have a taste of some of my other things."

He opens the bottle, then pushes it forward on the counter, in the direction of the man, then debates getting sugar. Again, not understand what the man meant, assuming that his many pills tasted badly, simply got out a bag of sugar, poured some in a small beer glass, and stuck a spoon in it, then placed it near the bottle of Vodka.

"Enjoy."

Gabriel gratefully accepted his drink, and set about pouring vodka into each shot glass. He dropped a single pill from his small pile into each, and a small puff of smoke emanated from each glass. Downing one at speed, he paused and threw back the second, re-filling the other glass as he did so and dropping another pill in it.

He kept downing the shots and re-filling the glasses until all the pills had been swallowed, and Gabriel's once-serene face now struggled to maintain its composure as his medicine worked it's way through through his body. His brow knitted furiously, he added a spoonful of sugar to a waiting shot of vodka, and threw it down his throat. Almost at once, the invisible cords which seemed to constrict him seemed to loosen and disappear, and his temperament became once more calm and placid, the beasts within him quenched.

Coughing slightly, Gabriel said in a small voice, "Thank you, most graciously...that really is...some spectacular vodka."

Rosiel nodded silently, then sat down on a stool behind the bar, and folded his arms.

"Perhaps I should get you a glass of water? And, if it isn't rude of me to ask, what is that medicine for? If it is even medicine, of course."

He gets himself a bottle of his precious Vodka, opens it, and drinks it straight from the bottle, without even bothering to get a glass or anything. He sets it down on the counter much more empty than it is full, looking thoughtfully at the man, waiting for an answer.

*slips in quietly and looks around. Notices the lack of people and heads to an empty table in the back.

Gabriel exhaled long and quietly, regaining his serene composure. He opened his own bottle of vodka and, pouring himself a shot, sipped it gingerly. "It controls me...keeps me...human, or as close as I can get."

He stuffed his boxes of pills back in his pocket and confided, "Without them, I would become something which I would rather die than experience. Without them, I'd become wild, animalistic...evil." Another sip of vodka, another snarl of the top lip. "I have all the time in the world to do it, so I've made it my mission to experience the world, and see how it changes over time. All I require are my pills, which I get from a good friend I help out every now and then. This book..." He pulled out his handsome, leather-bound pocket book, "...is only the latest volume in dozens. Some day, when I tire of wandering, I'll have them published...the world needs to know what I've seen."

And with a look which seemed half-way between bitterness and satisfaction, Gabriel threw the rest of the vodka down his throat and slammed the glass on the table, looking like he was about to breathe fire.

Rosiel blinks, gets off of his chair, and hops over the counter to Zanzen. He pokes him once, and when Zan mumbles something in his sleep, he excuses himself to the man, goes to his back room, and fetches a warm blanket. Once he is next to Zan again, he gently covers him with the blanket, and then hops back over the counter.

He takes another drink of his bottle, then sits down, considering the man's story.

"You know, sir, I doubt that the world would care. Not to offend you... I would be facinated by the opinion of another creature who perhaps saw as much as I have.

"So, you travel a lot? Well, if you decide to stick to this area, I wouldn't mind letting you use this place as a home. I originally meant for it to be an Inn, but I never got that far. There are five rooms at the top level. If you wish, you may choose one. There is no need to pay, although I may ask you to clean your room once in a while.

"Just don't drink all of my Vodka. And mind you, please don't break my shot glasses. I'm rather fond of them."

Gabriel smiled sheepishly and screwed the cap back on the bottle of vodka, placing it behind the counter. He held out the small leather book and said, "This book is as full as I'd like it to be, but for a page or so empty at the back. I think it's the last eleven months of travel...if you're interested, then..." Gabriel slid the book across the bar to Rosiel, losing the end of his setence in a mumble.

He gave a small cough and hopped off the stool, saying, "Well, I've walked many miles to get here, and I tend to do most of my sleeping during the day..." Gabriel made a small bow to his host, and bade him goodbye.

Walking up the stairs to the top level, Gabriel entered through the first door he came to. A comfortably-furnished room, with a fine four-poster bed at the centre of the far wall; he looked through the window, where he could see the moon setting behind the far mountains in the distance. Pulling the heavy cover from the bed, he draped it across the curtains, blocking out all natural light. Smiling in satisfaction, Gabriel kicked off his shoes and lay on the bed. He lay silently awhile, gazing at the ceiling, before pulling another handbook from his trouser pocket; identical to the first, but for its pristine and unmarked pages. He pulled the fine gold-nibbed pen out of his pocket, opened the book at the first page, and began to write:

Tuesday. May.

Having reached civilisation, I am staying at a charming place called The Seven Roses. The landlord is a marvellous character; he calls himself Rosiel...

Faye Jarlon yawned against the back of her hand, eyes crossing to focus on the cut short fingernails that displayed the rough life she'd been leading lately. She felt so dirty and unkempt. A feeling she was not used to after her years of refinement.
The clatter of a window being shut somewhere on the street snapped her back into the dim reality while a hand gave her elbow a squeeze.
"Faye? Inside." The soft voice rushed into her ear like a spring breeze.
She glanced up and smiled, pulling her red lips up to kiss his cheek. Keovari Seriph smiled and nodded, gesturing to the door.
"Pardon me, Keovari. I was just considering how abysmal my sanitary routine has been. I feel as if I could never have lived in relative wealth." She laughed, "I had been far too used to the luxury of a settled home, dear Keovari." A smile spread across her face again. The siver lining. Think of the silver lining.

Keovari let a faint show of emotion slip across his face. She was trying. It was hard for someone like Faye to accept the concequences of change. Especially of change that was forced from the evil she still fought in her heart. All the long years that he'd known her, Faye had fought to keep herself in the more gentle human form. Even though his presence would prevent much of the struggle from harming her, it still did excite her anxiety. He was proud that his ward did so well in keeping an attitude of cheerfulness.
He pushed back his white blonde hair to sit behind his ears and straightened the white overcoat. He felt out of place beside the girl with vibrant life eminating from her. His icy blue eyes contrasted brilliantly with her dark blue ones. Where her black hair stretched in gentle waves to her elbows, his bright locks grazed his cheek. Her elegant skirts, once muted blue and black, now seemed to lighten shadows in their outstanding blue, inviting red, and white layers.
"Let us go." Spoken shortly in his quiet voice as he pushed open the door and entered the bar behind the small woman.

Rosiel looked up from the leather-bound book that he was reading. He had taken the man's book and was reading of his travels when two more people had come into his bar. In his usual greeting, he arched his brow and stood up.

"Since when did anyone know about this place? Well, greetings to you, two. Would either of you like a drink, some food, or perhaps even a room for the night? You look a little weary, if you'll pardon my saying? I already have a quest staying in one of the upper rooms, so please mind that. Otherwise, any of the four rooms are yours for the taking.

I'm Rosiel, and my brother Stefan and I run this bar. That on the chair there," he says softly, pointing to Zanzen, "is Zanzen. I was actually about to wake him up and see if he'd like to use one of the rooms, or my personal room. Please, make yourselves at home."
