Back in the day (oh god I'm sounding old...) it was Final Fantasy IV that got me into RPGs (well, it was called II). And while I liked the FF series immensely, something was interesting about Suikoden.

The fact that there were 6 characters allowed in battle, plus the fact that there was over 100 characters o_O as a kid it baffled me. And I loved it.

So after renting and playing SI and SII from teh local rental store for a few years, I noticed it was always in when I came in. So I went to the check out, and asked if I could buy them since I was the only one who ever rented them (shocking, no?). So the manager said yes...

...and sold me I & II for under a total of $20. BWAHAHAHAA.

And so loving the series, I continued to buy III, as well as the III manga. I ended up skipping IV since I didn't have a working ps2 at the time. But now it's fixed and I'm playing V finally. Maybe I'll go back for IV when I can budget it.

What made you fall in love with this series? What kept/keeps you with this series?

For me, it was the large cast of characters that immediately drew me into this series. Afterward, it was the story that kept me with this series. I just liked how "real" the plot was. I enjoy fantasy as much as the next person, but sometimes you need a good story that has some realism to it.

I fell in love with suikoden because of the strong storyline. Final fantasy has that too, but the *romance* Made me quit final fantasy. In suikoden, you can decide your own fate ( choices, the hero's name, etc )

And the storyline -- the thing that's really important. Suikoden is the only serie that can get me really excited. Let's go free a land?! YES! Let's go and do it! I also really like the true rune idea. When a character receives a true rune, it will have a hard time dealing with it. And strangely enough, you can feel how your main character feels.

I always feel very attached to the main characters XD

Yes! Exactly. When it comes to RPG's, I get so sick of saving the world. And Suikoden is always there for me. heart

At first, and I say this with shame, I felt indifference toward it. My brother's the one who was playing it at first. Then one day I walked by while my brother was playing SuikodenIII, and I ask, "Who's that guy in the black?" He say's, "Who? Yuber?
Me:"Yuber, hm? He looks cool."
Him:"You know he kills innocent people, Right?"
Me:"Really? He can't be THAT bad." (Yuber kicks Jimba over and offers to finish him off.)Me:.........................What?
And ever since I've been dedicated to prove Yuber isn't entirley evil. (no help from the other suikoden's to prove this.) Actually I want him to be evil, I don't think he'd be as cool if he went soft.

My friend actually got me hooked. I think it was about 5 years ago. Her cousin gave her the first game years ago, said he hated it and wanted to get rid of it. Both of us of course fell in love with the series, and its grown from there. 3 was the first game I bought, since the other ones were a bit hard to find if you didn't shop online, which, as a high school freshman, was difficult to do if you couldn't beg your parents to use their credit card. XD *totally envies Genmaru for his <$20 deal*

how it all fits together....I fell in love with the first one because I had never played a game quite like it before...everything links and they cameo everything....there are no real loose ends and I don't have questions when I'm done...
that and the collecting of the stars, what other game does that? it affects your ending....and you just have to find out what the best ending will be...so you conciously get all of those stars just for the ending.

I agree with you there. I like the whole 108 stars mythology- collecting all of the characters actually has meaning, they are not just random people who join the ride just for the hell of it, like most RPGs. I also love the way the games continue from each other (I'm sure other people have pointed this out) but it's nice that you get characters returning, sometimes older, sometimes younger, and you get to learn a bit more about them. And the games always stick to the same rules- that order and chaos are goverend by the powers of the true runes- instead of coming up with a whole new idea every time (I find Final Fantasy quite exausting, with them always changing the magic powers)

i got sucked into the story and the characters. my favorite part though was the war scrimmages and the cookoffs in 2.

I'd have to say what got me hooked was the Storyline, Chinchirorin, the personalities of the characters, the way you have to collect them all and the True Runes.
