Aramethea My point is that we used to READ to entertain ourselves. People don't read anymore. Well, if people don't read anymore, then I'm not a person. smile

Too much "entertainment" television programmes, targeted for people of a lesser intelligence than us. Then, others are sucked in, and instead of progressing their intelligence, they just feed their minds with dribble. I don't often use that word; "dribble". normtheclone I'm pretty sure we are normal. They're just dumb a*ses. You're just lowering yourself to their level. A terrible act of demeanor.

I knew of the gardens, but not in-depth. And why would pop culture like Big Brother be on an english test, general knowledge or not? Is it "All-hail-the-boob-tube" time? That bothers me more than the gardens question.

Emmanuela Anyway, the topic is 'Is the general intelligence of people dropping or am I some sort of geek by knowing about the Hanging Gardens of Babylon?' Wow. Just.... wow. I'm in freaking SIXTH GRADE and evry single person in my Social Studies class would be able to fill that in without a second thought. Even the people not classified as geeks. So, I think you're safe.

I think that people are just getting stupid. I may be a geek... I play D&D, avoid sports, and read too much... But I still think that it's a little ridiculous that people don't know the seven wonders of the world. There are only seven!

That bothers me more than the gardens question. Well, the concept of "Big Brother" is not new enough to be considered pop culture. It's first major published appearance was in Orwell's 1984, which was written in written in 1948 (I think...). The book is nearly considered a classic now.

I'd quote every single one of you to reply to your points, but I needn't do that. 90% of you just said the exact same thing!
I am insulted that you think people who don't know the seven wonders are stupid or unintelligent. That would be knowledge (a piece of which I do not possess) and it's always been said that knowledge is not wisdom, and I say that knowledge is not intelligence.
Yes, the amount of reading and trivia knowledge has lowered somewhat GENERALLY. There are plenty of people who do know the seven wonders. Have you ever heard of idiot savant? If a boy cannot interact in society, but is a genious in calculus, does that make him stupid or unintelligent? He can't have conversations with people or write a coherent sentence, but he surpasses everyone in his calculus class. I think that this is what you're doing to the people who don't know that little piece of trivia.
I just made a long post in another thread to introduce a non-blaming outlook about slang and how it's degrading the English language and now I have to do the same thing here. I'm getting to know how the members of this guild think and I'm not really liking it. DNA Guru and Rallion, yours are the only posts I've come across in this thread that make sense and do not bring others down. Your open-mindedness has proven you two to be of the most intelligent in this discussion.
I'll be kicked out of this guild before the month is out, I swear. Just so you know, I'm not bashing anyone, but I'm not saying these things just for the sake of argument either. Don't get too absorbed in your judgement of your own "intelligence" and end up making people feel bad about not knowing something like what the Hanging Gardens of Babylon are.

You raise some good points. That's why I attempt to inform people without insulting them. (unless they are a friend, in which case insults are allowed) For example, my last post pointed out where "Big Brother" originated, but I don't think less of people just because they've never read 1984; there are plenty of books that I probably should be familiar with that I'm not, so I could hardly talk. Again, you raised good points. Just be careful that you don't become equally as judgemental as those you accuse of being as such.

This is general knowledge. How can they not know this!? This is quite sad... I knew this a long time ago. General knowledge is fun and interesting. But, even though it's interesting, I like History better.

It's not a matter of not being intelligent, it's a matter of what information you choose to hang on to after first absorbing it. I think we all read or hear about the Seven Wonders at some point, but it's not a topic that comes up regularly. Rather like knowing all the details of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Not everyone will care enough about such things to know all about them.
Heck, I can't name all seven of the Wonders.. sweatdrop
