Kaveri Porter

"I don't know who told you what, but you didn't think it wouldn't happen again?" Kaveri questioned, looking rather annoyed -- not at Newt, but the general policy on honesty that the staff had towards their subjects. It was more than likely that the poor frog-man was a victim of the lies, too. If money had any value here, Kaveri would even bet on it.

"Dere's probably a lot more up ahead," she warns, her voice taking on a bit of a croak itself. It's more of a low clicking sound than the frog's croak. "At least it'll be a while before you change again... at least a month or two." That's how far apart her changes were, she realized-- when would she change again? Soon?

"Do you need to lay down?"

His swollen eyes began to water, his hands going up to where to his horror, his hair seemed to be shedding to expose his now froggish ears. The top seemed to remain, though, hanging limp, black and wet against his moist forehead. Tears slid down his cheaks as he shook his head madly, "I... I t-tried so hard to be g-good- I... I d-don't want to be a frog!" He was clearly a touch delusional as he wobbled in front o fher.

God, this poor guy. Kaveri frowned, watching Newt's hair fall off in clumps and some of it getting stuck to his skin as he began to cry. Kaveri swallowed, she wanted to be as comforting as she could -- transformations aren't easy, they're as terrifying to watch as they are to experience. She felt numb, her throat was dry, and she hardly felt comfortable but she could only sympathize.

"We all try to be good, man," she says, shaking her head, "ain't gonna help us much here. None of us want to be what we're becomin'... you dink I asked to become a vulture? It's bullshit, I know. I know just what you're goin' through." She bent down to pick up her stick again, regaining her footing as she leaned against it.

"It's not easy being green, but at least dat's easier dan being, say, a slug," the vulture woman forced a smile. "Always count your blessings. I'd rather be a frog dan a vulture, myself."

Kaveri hoped Moreau wasn't listening in and getting ideas.

Newt hiccuped and sniffed as tears poured down his sunken boney cheaks, the nostrils on his flattened nose twitching as he sucked in air in an attempt to breath, "I... I... I d-don't d-deserve this... I ... I w-worked hard for them... I w-was loyal... it's... it's n-not a d-de-desease, is it?"

"Nobody deserves dis s**t," Kaveri sighed, "it's not a disease. It's some kind of crack science dat would be illegal in de States. All I know for sure. But even den, I'm sure wid enough money de government would overlook dis unefical crap if it happened in de States." She took a breath, then added, "If dis were a disease, and if it were contagious, we would all be made of random animal parts stuck togedder. But dere is Zach... but he is more carefully planned random animal parts den randomly-placed animal parts."

Preaching about the government's corruption was probably doing little to help Newt's situation, but Kaveri felt the need to say something about it anyways. She walked over to him and embraced him into a somewhat prickly hug, clumsily running her deformed hands over his shoulders. "Just stop crying, alright? Tings'll get better."

Well. Depending on how you define the word 'better,' anyway.

He gulped in a few desperate breaths, his ever present, unwavering loyalty firing up once again, although there was a frightened edge to his voice that showed the tiniest doubt. "Th-th-the r-research that goes on here w-will s-save lives!" He sniffed, trying to stop his tears as he twisted and attempted to scramble from her grip, "It's ben-ben-benificial to the wuh-world! J-just because... a f-few gov-gov-governments m-might... f-find it q-questionable, M-moreau is a gen-gen-genious! His w-work m-m-mmm-must con-continue!"

Kaveri could have been as sympathetic and as comforting as she wanted... until Newt had to go off and say that. "Are you daft, man? Dis s**t isn't beneficial to anyone! More and more people are being dragged to dis crap-heap nearly every ******** day against deir will and you tink dis s**t should be allowed to continue?"

The vulture immediately pulled away, looking rather cross as one hand lay on her hip and the other held meaningfully on to her walking stick. "If Moreau is so great, den why are you so upset you're becoming a frog? Dis didn't just happen spontaneously! He did dis to you on purpose!"

Had she any real hands, it was tempting to slap some sense into the poor, misguided frog-man. It simply made no sense to her for anybody to be loyal to Moreau or think that his "research" was doing any good.

"He... he..." Newt scrambled back away from her in a pained crouch. His feet were throbbing, as was the rest of him, his head still spinning as he hugged his legs to his chest tightly. Sabin had said- Moreau had said- but- The memories he had supressed from just befor his relocation came knocking at his mental block once more, informing him that he was being silly and needed to open the door this instance or they would be cross. And with a gulp, he did. Sabin had lied to him. It wasn't a very large suprise in the least- underneith it all, Newt had known all along. "S-so... so.. I r-really am... a sub-subject now..." He wobbled, swollen eyes trembling, fighting back fresh tears.

It's really hard to stay mad at this guy. While Kaveri was still rather irate, she got the impression that the frog-man was probably some kind of lackey who didn't really know what the hell was going on beyond what was fed to him by the staff. She sighed with frustration and knelt down in the dirt, shaking her head.

"Lissen. I don't know what dey told you, but I can bet you anyting it was all a lie. Dat's how dey get people here in de first place, by lying troo deir teef and actin' like everyting's going to be better for you when you're wif dem," she said, trying to explain it in a fairly even tone, "Anyone here can tell you, it's not, and from de looks of it, you're a subject now. I'm sorry I yelled at you."

Newt kept his head down between his knees, his mind racing over everything, details sorting themselves out. "I... I th-thought I had d-done a g-good job... all th-these years..." Sure he had made a mistake or two... or three... or... come to think of it, he had made a lot of mistakes, hadn't he? But he had done a lot of good, too! He was a fast and deligant worker, he was loyal and did as he was told without question, he prided himself on that. In his dismay, his neck suddenly inflated and collapsed again with a froggish croak.

Kaveri shifted and settled so she sat on the ground, crossing her legs. "So, what did dey say to you when you were sent here?" She asked, tilting her head. "Dey told me dat I was going to be sent to an independent commune -- you know, live off de land, grow my own food, and generally be free to do whatever I want." She paused to think, then adds, "I suppose de last part is kind of true if you look past having everyting you do or say caught on camera and de fact dat you can't escape."

She shrugged helplessly, mildly unnerved by the inflating neck sac. It looked so creepy on someone that's supposed to be human.

"I... I... I w-was b-being t-truh-transfered," He answered after a long pause. The jungle heat didn't bother him anymore, his amphibious skin drinking up the humidity happily. Self concious of his skinny, bear arms and undershirt, he pulled the top half of his jumper up again, but kept his eyes off of the Feral Labs insignia embroidered on his chest. "I... I'm n-not sure wh-where I st-stand now. I... I used to w-work... up at the l-labs. F-for a long while... it ... it w-was v-very n-nice. V-very c-clean, very efficiant.... I... I d-don't know what to d-do..."

"Transfered? You worked at de labs? What did you do before?" Kaveri asked, hoping that Newt wasn't a part of the crack team of scientists. It seemed unlikely, but there was a lot about the inner workings of the labs she didn't know about. Janitors? Secretaries? Who needs those when your corporation is made entirely up of evil doctors and faceless scientists?

"Cus-cus-custodian and... gen-general tech-technitian," Newt tried to say it with as much pride as he had befor, but the change had left him drained and emotionally unstable. "I... I'm a b-bit... c-clumsy, though..."

Hm. It made sense, after hearing him talk about how clean the labs were. "Strange dat dey would make you go out here," Kaveri murmured, scratching her head.

Clumsy? Oh, no. That didn't sound very good, it was probably what got Newt outhere in the first place. She almost wondered what it was that he spilled, or threw away, or knocked over that merited him being cast out amongst the experiments. "Dis place doesn't have de best job security, does it?"
