ZonkotheSane roothands nathan_ngl roothands My husband's keychain is a hamsa. His best friend sent it to him from Israel, it has a prayer engraved on the back in Hebrew to protect you from suicide bombers. I don't think thats exactly what they were meant for... sweatdrop , which explains zonko's dissaproval over the post rolleyes . Uhm... didn't say I thought that's what they were for or that I approved....! Zonko already expressed his disapproval of hamsas in general.i did...? seriously though- i'm pretty sure i have that same keychain. the prayer is tefillas haderech, prayer for the road. it's said during any period of extended travel (today, over about 50 miles). though i suppose the dangers of traveling do include suicide bombers... anyway, the prayer itself doesn't help. it's not like a charm, or something like that. one actually has to mean these things when one says them. Wait, is it silver, and does it have a mogen David in the middle with blue glass in the middle of that? It may be the exact same one. (I wish I had a picture of it scanned, I might do that later in the week.)
And I can't read Hebrew yet, so I didn't realize that the prayer wasn't specifically to protect you from suicide bombers, though that did sound pretty fishy to me, but since I wasn't raised Jewish, I tend to believe what other Jews tell me. Like I said, it came from his best friend in Israel and that's what he had told him. But like you said, it could probably be interpreted as protecting you from bombers, which is probably what the guy meant.
I'm well aware it's useless if all you do is just passively carry it around with you. But putting it with your keys is a good idea, since you're likely to carry your keys with you anytime you leave the house, whether it's to go to the store or across the country.
Interestingly, there's a similiar talisman in Islam, though most Muslims frown upon them.

ZonkotheSane bonus: it was because of his warring that dovid was not permitted to construct the first beis hamikdash (the temple, literally "house of purity". naftali will check me on that. it may be "house of God/house of the shechina (hashem's "aura", so to speak)). another reason why he couldn't constuct the beis hamikdash was because if he did, hashem would have considered it too holy to destroy, and instead would have been forced to destroy klal yisroel (the entirety of israel, meaning the jewish poeple), as punishment. Correct 3nodding . There are other names, like "the house of choosing" or "the sanctified house". Another interesting fact - it wasn't just for jews, many people from other nations came to pray there. Another reason that david couldn't build the temple: G-d saw he was collecting treasures for the temple, but by that was neglecting the people somewhat, because he could have used that gold to help them - and g-d didn't want that (I'm not sure whether solomon used those treasures in the end or not... sweatdrop ). A link for more information on the temple:Beit hamikdashLi'shana haba'a bi'yirushalyim habnuya.. amen 3nodding . Next year, in the rebuilt Jerusalem blaugh .

Hmm... well there was a similiar discussion about them on the 3faithdialogue community on livejournal, and every Muslim seemed to frown down upon them, several said they were blasphemous.
Someone said it was called the hand of Fatima in Muslim circles, could be wrong though.

Someone I know who's in Iraq right now, wanted to wear a hamsa instead of a magen David because it _can_ also be a Muslim symbol and doesn't immediately single one out as a Jew... Understandably, since in that part of the world, being a Jew can substantially increase your risk of getting shot.
In my neighborhood, which is about half Jewish, half Muslim, I see about the same numbers of people on both sides wearing hamsas and hanging them in their homes.. But yeah, Muslims refer to it as the Hand of Fatima, Fatima being the daughter of the prophet Mohammed.... The name Fatima makes me, an ex-Catholic, think of Our Lady of Fatima - one of the incarnations of the virgin Mary.

MANNOWAR why can't you everquote someone Ive studied like Akiba or the balshem tov(who I might be directly descended brom btw) I would quote him if he had something to do with hamsas. He does have alot to do with hasidim, so if you have a question about hasidut, we could bring that up 3nodding . I think we visited around the area he was buried while we were in poland if I'm not mistaken... sweatdrop
