This is my theory of the origin of the Shinigami.
I think that there existed at least one Death Note, that was left in the Human World (otherwise, this theory woudln't make sense! lol). And that some random guy just picked it up and did exaclty what Light is doing with it. However, since it was only one Death Note, there was no Shinigami attached to it, which made it impossible for the man to know what it did. Unknown to the Death Note's powers, he simply descided to keep the Death Note as a regular notebook! He took notes on it, wrote his grocery list and took down names as well (!). Eventually, he died. Adn since he wrote down names on the Death Note, he became the first Shinigami. And with that, another Death Note was created.

Maybe There was one death note that that king guy had and then anyone who used it became one later on, they did say there had been othre cases of death notes in the human world. I know that dosn't make a lot of sence but when you chuck in the 'No one who's used the death note can enter heaven or hell' thing...
