Just been listening to the commentary. Apparently this is the only episode that doesn't mention Torchwood, only because Steven Moffat (the writer) hadn't been told about it. Their excuse? It was set in France, and before Torchwood had been invented.

Very good episode in my opinion, could well be my favourite. I loved the horse on the spaceship thing. It was unexpected, and very funny. I did jump at the beginning with the doll under the bed, and I cried at the end. It had the whole range of emotions!

Anyone else get the feeling they're preparing us for ditching Rose?

In the past couple of episodes, what with Sarah Jane and now Miss-name-I'm-not-even-going-to-try-and-spell, Rose seems to be getting the picture she's not so special. In very blank terms.

So, does it seem at all like they're trying to create a distance between them? I hope it'll be overcome, but it could be for that purpose. Rose is with them for another series yet, isn't she? @__@

Oh, by God, the chavtastic wonder has grown on me. x3;;

She signed a contract for series three, but they seem to be preparing us for something, with the fact that Rose will meet her Dad next episode.

W, T and F??? Get that 'orrible spoiler out of my sight irrrrmediertly evil

The horse through the window is another of those bits that make me think this episode wasn't essentially Whoish in nature. The doc just ain't that kind of hero O.o Plus the way he went from loving the structural side of the clockwork dolls and forgiving them for just doing their job to then becoming unnecessarily cruel toward them in his final speech. Plus the way he 'seduced' Madame de Pompadour and did very little to dissuade her from it (in fact he even seemed to make light of the happening). Plus his drunkeness.

Somebody needs to sort old Jimboy out a bit I fear. He's gone off the rails xD

He needs therapy or something.

I didn't like this cause I'm a Doctor/Rose shipper/fangirl, I don't like the doctor over every thing in a skirt cause that just turns things cheasy, but Rose is ok cause she's one person, you know, not just every person.

I didn't like the kiss at first, but this episode was so brilliantly written it seemed OK. The Doctor was head-over-heels at first sight. (By the way, is the moon in this episode? xp ) This is by far the strongest script of the series so far, it seems as if the series is getting better and better.

TGITF was a credit to Steve Moffat, and finally the Doctor got his own story! He isn't just the designated driver of Rose Tyler: Travels in Time anymore!!!

But, it seems as if they are setting us up for something. Rose leaving? Maybe so. But I think it's something bigger. Personally I believe theyre trying to make the Doctor seem more inhumane at times, and more humane at others. Maybe theyre carrying on with the 7th Doctor plot ark, he has been called a 'lonely angel' and a 'lonely god' this season.

PLEASE LET HIM BE A GUARDIAN!

Plus the fact remains, if the doctor was that bothered by his French rendezvous he could always use the TARDIS to n** back there, but he clearly doesn't.

This speaks volumes I feel o_o
Actually he mensioned earlier on he could not travel using the tardis because they where part of events... I'm not sure what he means by that or how it stops him but it's what he said

He can't travel in time once he's landed and become 'involved' in something until its run its natural course (except, apparently, in Parting of the Ways). And sure there's a case that while in the 51st century he was also involved in 17th Century France there were plenty of years left *after* the clockwork drones were disposed of he could have gone to Versaillies. This is why I don't really look on it as a regular doctor who episode. It works far better as a metaphorical, slightly surreal tale about the nature of love and the doctor. The fancy plot is just there to prettify things while you watch it xD
you always say that the good episodes are crap and the crap episodes are good I CAN'TS TAKES IT NO MORES!!!!!!!*starts shaking and then turns into a chicken*

Ye-ah, I got that impression too. x_x

The Doctor, in my view, isn't that sort of hero, but bearing on Tennant's performance in Casanova, his taking up a sword in the Christmas special... this time he does seem to be more of a knight-in-shining-armour, or acting up to it, at any rate.

I'd have thought, even if he was in love - and they may have said so in confidential, but in a couple of seconds I'm still skeptical and from all my experience that makes for fairytale writing, which is great, but... just doesn't take my fancy in the world of the Doctor, even if they didn't have time to make it as impressive without it, and wow, this deviates completely and has to be too long for an inserted thought - his sense would override that and he would stick with understanding they were just doing as they were programmed to. He's very hot-headed - knightish, again.

We don't even know what their mission was, so we? What it was they were doing in space when they didn't have enough parts. Who were the crew that created them - with human attributes for the eyes, heart, need for human brain and sense of clockwork perhaps they could've been human! - and what were they doing? Waaah, that's the one part that I really want filling in. It's a great story, but it nee~eeds backing up. Although that's not really possible with how they've set it up. Oh dear...

The ship was human, in the 51st century humans can travel in time (Jack was from the 51st century), They were only clockwork in 18th century france, they were run on some sort of other power in the actual ship. In the TARDISODE, you see the ship (piloted by humans) being hit by the ion storms and then this woman (crew) wakes up from being knocked out and you hear the ticking and she says No what are you doing! and then screams and end. Conclusion: ship=human.

duno what's more scary Crumpet Lord... you with the sheet on or off razz Sorry had to say it since hairy isn't here I have no one to tease and he said pick on you whee

Supose the 51st century could be their reffrence to Torchwood, although in the comantaries it was said this eppisode had none cause Russel didn't tell him about it.

Well I loved this episode!

So much I watched it on both Sat and Sun!

The ship was rather strogg-like (Quake 4) in its use of body parts (I realised what they meant the very first time the robots mentioned the lack of parts) The reason for the clockwork-ness is that there were real clockwork men at that time in France (can't remember if they mentioned it in the confidential) who were built to play chess.

And I loved the link between the Ship & Madame du Pompadoure.

And why are people so bothered by the kiss? (granted it's getting a little repetitive; Cassandra, SJS and now Lady Penelope!)

I'll tell you why I was bothered about it. The doctor just swept into Mme.de Pompadoure's life without so much as a by-your-leave, wielding all kinds of fancy powers (he 'controls' fire in front of her for goodness sake) and fully playing up to his role as 'lord of time' (as he rather ungraciously quips later on in the episode. At one point I thought he respected our ancient and venerable Earth customs rolleyes .) Then when she begins to get too close to him, rather than doing the honourable thing and stepping back to allow her to lead a normal life he fully encourages her to fall in love with...what, exactly? A dream? A fireplace-man? What choice does she have but to fall for him really? He's the knight in shining armour that's always been there to save her-but he let it go too far in this episode. After the Sarah Jane incident you'd have expected, well, a little more in the way of common sense from him. To all intents and purposes he ensnared poor Mme.de Pompadoure within her own dreams and didn't show her the way out (which he at least had the presence of mind to do for his companions).

If you'd think one person would know by now not to mess about with people's emotions when there's something like time-travel involved, it would be the doctor. What makes it sad for me is not the fact that their love was cut short prematurely, but the fact that it seems he's willing to put someone else's life on the line in order to gratify his own need for acceptance. He's as lonely and flawed as the clockwork droids and I don't think we've ever seen clearer evidence of that than there was on show here.

Probably one of the most colorful episodes I have seen from the series (in general) in a very long time. I have to admit I liked to costumes a whole lot, I suspect a decent size of the budget went into that.

Though I have to admit, the Doctor suddenly having various love interests is shaping him into a "human" figure, but on the other hand stripping him of his enigmatic qualities which I liked about him and kept the series going for as long as it has.

Finally I watched the episode. DAMN.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I think "Tooth & Claw" is still my favourite of the season so far but this one did keep my interest running extremely well. I'll refrain from mentioning the same things everyone else has already, so here are some new thoughts to the table:

1. Wonderful off-beat humourous bits in this episode, such as when Rose tells the Doctor that he can't keep the horse and he replies "Well I let you keep Mickey!" Except that I love Mickey...but it still amused me. <333

2. Most interesting thing to me in this episode that has yet to be discussed is the fact that Rose's brain was apparently also compatible. Hmmmmmm? What does this mean? Is there some sort of connection between Rose and Mme. de Pompadour? Clearly Rose was trying to hint at this at the end of the episode but the Doctor was too love-struck to get it. I'm seriously curious at what this all means.
