Jack lifted a hand as if to reach for her but stopped, frowning. With a jerk, he motioned for Brunswick to come to his shoulder. The feien shook his head and Jack scowled more. Then he shook his head. "Arseholes," he muttered under his breath. "This is ridiculous. Madness." He lifted both hands to rake them through his hair and then his keen, dark eyes were fixed on Trin's face. "So what now?"

Jack, however, was not to be dissuaded. "An' if it comes t' him or you, luv?" he asked lowly and there was something dark and unspoken in his tone, a flicker of bone-chilling power.

Brunswick looked up at his bond a bit startled; he knew Jack pretty well, he thought, but he had never heard him use that voice before. Gingerly, he shifted to balance on the very edge of Trin's shoulder as he studied the magician.

Just as suddenly, though, the feeling was gone and Jack's eyes were lowered, his hand busily digging in his coat pocket. "Bruns would miss his sister," he murmured lightly.

Jack's hand came up to hold Trin's to his shoulder for a moment more and he raised his head to meet her eyes. He searched for something for a moment and then, slowly nodded, squeezing her hand tightly. A slow smile grew on his face. "Right, then. Just checkin'." Suddenly, he leaned in to drop a feathery kiss on her cheek before releasing her hand and stepping back, finally pulling his hand from his pocket. A crumpled pack of cigarettes was in his hand. "Good lass."

Sagging a bit in relief, Brunswick snorted. "Jerk," he muttered under his breath but there was a touch of relaxing in his tone. He wasn't sure he wanted to hear Jack like that again.

"Huh?" Jack looked down at the smokes in his hand and laughed sheepishly. "Oh, hell. Sorry, luv. It's a habit, dirty one at that. I don't even realize I'm doin' it. 'Course I won't smoke down here."

Brunswick huffed impatiently and pivoted on Trin's shoulder to peer around the bits of the shop he could see. It looked fascinating. Trust Jack to mess it up.

"I don't mean t' interrupt the tour," Jack murmured guiltily as he slipped his lanky frame into the tiny closet with her. Once more, he set his hands against the wall, over her shoulders and behind her, one on either side of her head; if the elevator jerked, there was no way he'd fall against her in that position. One hand still held the cigarettes. "I'm sorry. I can wait, y'know. I'm not hopeless."

"Yeah, you are." Miffed, Brunswick left Trin's shoulder and deliberately settled himself on the back of Jack's neck, little heels drumming impatiently.

"I'd rather you stayed--" Shade said as he looked over the house for a moment, checking out the various exits with an expert eye.

"I'm not staying in the hotel." Callisto said coldly. For one she didn't trust Silva not to show up the moment Shade was gone. For another, she had to know for sure.

"But Calli, this isn't something you'll... enjoy watching." He said, his shoulders slumping slightly even as he headed up the steps and eyed the lock of the door for a moment. "It can get... messy, you know?"

"So you are one." She said coldly.

"I didn't tell you?" He asked, pausing. "Sorry 'bout that." He reached up and rang the doorbell, looking patient.

Before the man at the door could respond, Jack had already reappeared and there was a cigarette tucked neatly in his mouth and a lighter was already flickering to life in his hand. Brunswick had been right; Jack was far more addicted than he thought. "Hey, luv, did you fancy..?" He trailed off as his eyes raised with the lighting of the cigarette and he blinked at Shade. A string of silent curses rattled through his brain, neatly describing his sudden switch of mood in a half dozen different languages (two of which were, technically, dead). He heard a gasp in his ear but knew it to be Brunswick. Gears turned quickly and then, suddenly, Jack smiled broadly as he stepped forward, course decided.

It might be a half-assed way of detering the inevitable but it was worth a shot (provided Trin didn't shoot -him- for it). Anything to keep bond and feien alive... Brunswick's subsequent bitching would be only one of the things that kept him up at night should Shade complete his job.

To the sound of another gasp in his ear, Jack neatly slipped his arm around Trin's shoulders possessively as his free hand palmed his lighter and drew the smoking cigarette from his mouth. "Hey, mate," he beamed. "You stalkin' me now? Sweetheart, this is the bloke I told you about. One I met at the HQ an' all."

Shade raised an eyebrow, looking over the pair casually for a moment. "It really is a small world, huh?" He asked, grinning slightly. "Nice to see you again, Jack! But I think I've got the wrong house... Do either of you know someone named Trinityblue?"

"Shade--" Callisto whispered in his ear. "What if--" She stopped, her red eyes focused on TB, a frown pulling at her full lips.

"Naaah. You're not Trinityblue, are you, lady?" He asked.

Moving as if long-acustomed to absent touches, Jack squeezed Trin's shoulder and his grin flickered with amusement. Thanks, da, for the ability to lie, he thought. "Small world, then." He tipped his head to nod politely at Callisto. "An' hello t' you, too, gorgeous. Has he gotten you a hairbrush yet?"

In desperation, Brunswick buried his face in the back of Jack's hair. He had never before felt so caught between hilarity and terror.
